Female suicide bomber kill four at hospital in Bajaur

According to Pakistani security officials, a woman suicide bomber today detonated a bomb outside a hospital in a lawless tribal area of northwest Pakistan, killing at least four people and injuring five others.

The attack took place in Khar, the main town of Bajaur tribal district bordering Afghanistan where the military has carried out several offensives against Al-Qaeda-linked Taliban militants.

Mohammad Riaz, chief doctor at the government hospital said, “At least four people were killed and four others were wounded in the blast outside the main gate of the hospital.”

In the meantime local administration official Abdul Haseebhe said, “It was a female suicide bomber, about 18-20 years old. We have found her legs and head.”

The dead included a security personnel, a hospital worker and two civilians, he added.

Bajaur, one of seven districts that make up Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), had been a stronghold of the Taliban until 2008. However, the security forces cleared the region of Taliban militants as the result of major offensives.

Taliban release video of severed heads of Pakistani soldiers

Pakistani Taliban released a video showing what appeared to be the severed heads of a dozen soldiers on Friday as security officials said 15 troops were missing following fighting with militants.

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan Spokesman Sirajud Din sent AFP a video showing a militant commander posing with 12 heads arranged on the ground.

“Praise be to God that the mujahideen in Bajaur agency have managed to kill the infidel soldiers of Pakistan,” he says.

“Many of them were killed by bullets, 12 of them as you see have been beheaded, you see 12 heads here, and more heads are on the way.”

The sickening image shows armed Taliban militants standing over decapitated heads which they claim belong to soldiers they killed in clashes on the Pakistan border.

The Pakistan Army says Sirajuddin is operating from Pakistan and speaks for Mullah Fazlullah, the former commander of the Taliban in Swat Valley who is now believed to be based in a border region of Afghanistan.

The Taliban’s claim came hours after the Pakistan Army acknowledged that 15 of its soldiers went missing three days ago after clashes with the Taliban in Batwar area of Bajaur Agency, which borders Afghanistan.

The clashes on Tuesday came as part of a Pakistan army operation to repel Taliban militants who had crossed over from Kunar province in Afghanistan last Friday and occupied the village of Batwar in the Bajaur tribal district.

KHAR: A bomb killed at least five people and wounded three others on Wednesday in Pakistan’s northwest tribal badlands bordering Afghanistan, officials said.

The deaths occurred in Gatcheena village, 30 kilometres northwest of Khar, the main town of lawless Bajaur district, after a bomb planted at a village meeting place was detonated remotely.

“At least five people were killed after a bomb exploded at an elders meeting,” local government official Tariq Khan told AFP.

“Three others were wounded in the blast and there were about a dozen people present,” Khan said, adding that the people might have been targeted because they supported government efforts against Taliban-linked militancy.

Another government official and an intelligence official confirmed the bombing and casualties, but the precise identities of the dead were unclear.

Bajaur was the scene of major anti-Taliban offensives in August 2008 and in February 2009, and the military has repeatedly declared the district secure.

Pakistan Taliban free 17 kidnapped youths from Bajaur

The Taliban have freed 17 young men from north-west Pakistan who they seized four months ago, officials say.
About 30 youths were abducted in early September after they inadvertently strayed across the Afghan border.
Several managed to escape over the past few months. At least eight more are still being held by the militants, an official in Bajaur tribal area said.
The Taliban said they kidnapped members of the Mamund tribe because it supported the Pakistani government.
Over the past few years, influential members of the Mamund tribe have sided with the Pakistani military and raised private militias to fight the Taliban. The Pakistani government says the co-operation has helped clear the area of Taliban influence.
The youths, reportedly ranging in age from 10 to about 30 years old, were at a picnic to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid and had mistakenly crossed the border from Bajaur to take a bath in a spring, when the militants seized them.
