Roadside bomb kills 12 in Quetta

QUETTA: A powerful blast killed at least 12 people, of which eight were policemen, and injured 21 others in the Bhosa Mandi area of Quetta on Thursday morning.
Fayyaz Sumbal, the Deputy Inspector General Police, said unknown militants targeted the vehicle of police's Rapid Response Force (RRP) through a remote control bomb in Eastern Bypass area of Quetta.

He said militants had planted explosive materials in a car, which was parked on the roadside.

"When vehicle of RRF reached the spot, there was a huge blast," he said.

Sumbal said the strength of blast destroyed police vehicles and nearby buildings.

"More than 100 kgs explosives were used in the blast," an official of bomb disposal squad told Dawn.com. The injured were immediately rushed to civil hospital Quetta for medical treatment.

Emergency was imposed in hospital to ensure treatment to injured persons.

Massive terrorism bid foiled in Quetta

The Frontier Corps (FC) impounded a bus laden with massive explosive material on the outskirts of Quetta and arrested five accused.

On a tip off FC seized a bus at Quetta-Karachi Highway near Akhtar Abad area when it was checked on a check post.

The FC claimed that six to seven thousand kg explosive material packed in plastic bags was recovered from the vehicle, adding that five people on-board the bus were also arrested.

According to FC sources, the explosive laden bus was heading towards Naushki and explosive material was concealed with other items.

The sources said that area has been cordoned off for the search operation.

NATO airstrike kill Taliban leader in Logar province

A Taliban leader Mawlawi Sadiq was killed following a NATO airstrike in eastern Logar province.

International Security Assistance Force following a statement on Friday announced, Afghan and coalition security force conducted a operation, in Charkh district, Logar province, Thursday.

The target of the operation was Maulawi Sadiq, a Taliban leader and explosives expert who coordinated the movement of insurgents, provided explosive materials and training to insurgents, and planned attacks against Afghan and Coalition forces in the region.

During the operation, the Afghan and coalition security force requested a precision airstrike. After the strike, the security force conducted a follow-on assessment and confirmed Sadiq had been killed.

The precision airstrike did not harm any civilians and did not damage any civilian property. Anti-government armed militant groups yet to comment regarding the report.

Mar.25., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Evening Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered a weapons cache during routine operations in Marjah district, Helmand province, today.

The force discovered numerous bags of ammonium nitrate for use in improvised explosive devices. The total weight of ammonium nitrate was approximately 4,500 pounds (2,045 kilograms). A small amount of the cache was confiscated to be analyzed and the rest was destroyed on site.

South

In Musa Qal’ah district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered multiple improvised explosive devices in an abandoned compound, yesterday. The first IED was discovered near a doorway and a subsequent search revealed four additional IEDs totaling 25 pounds (11 kilograms) of explosive material. An explosive ordnance disposal team was called to the scene and destroyed all the IEDs in-place.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered multiple IEDs during routine operations in Dilah wa Khoshamand district, Paktika province, yesterday. Acting on tips from civilians, the combined patrol discovered six IEDs consisting of 95 pounds (43 kilograms) of home-made explosives. The combined patrol conducted controlled detonations on all of the devices, destroying them in-place.

Mar.21., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Evening Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – A coalition bomber conducted a precision airstrike destroying an improvised explosive device-making facility in Sangin district, Helmand province, Monday, March 19.

The facility was used by insurgents to build bombs and coordinate IED attacks in the area.

Following the strike, a coalition security force conducted a patrol confirming the building and IED-making materials were destroyed. The patrol also confirmed that there were no damages to any neighboring compounds and no civilian casualties were reported.

South

An Afghan Provincial Response Company, supported by coalition forces, recovered a narcotics and weapons cache in Lashkar Gar district, Helmand province, March 20. The cache consisted of 44 pounds (20 kilograms) of hashish, some opium harvesting tools, two rifles and a grenade. All of the items were confiscated by the PRC to be destroyed.

In Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered multiple improvised explosive devices during routine operations, Sunday, March 18. The team first discovered a motorcycle packed with explosives and on a subsequent search of the area found four additional IEDs. All of the explosive materials were confiscated to be destroyed.

East

An Afghan PRC, supported by coalition forces, discovered a large explosives and IED-manufacturing cache during an operation in Deh Yak district, Ghazni province, Sunday. The Afghan force found hidden in a garden four IEDs consisting of 187 pounds (85 kilograms) of explosives, 10 anti-tank mines, 66 pounds (30 kilograms) of homemade explosives and 10 fuses for anti-person mines. All of the materials were confiscated by the PRC for disposal.

Afghan intelligence seize 9,000 kgs explosives in Nangarhar

Afghan Intelligence (National Directorate for Security) officials on Saturday announced to discover and seized 9,000 kgs of explosives in eastern Nangarhar province, between Jalalabad and Torkham higways.

The officials further added, insurgents were struggling to use the explosives for carrying out insurgency attacks in various regions of eastern Nangarhar province.

Provincial Intelligence Media Department officials in eastern Nangarhar province said, the explosives were loaded on a truck vehicle.

The officials also added, no suspects have been detained in connection the explosives smuggle and Afghan security forces have launched a search operation in this regard.

Provincial Intelligence officials did not disclose further information regarding the exact date and location where the explosives were seized.

In the meantime Afghan Intelligence forces arrested an individual with 10 weapons between Jalalabad and Torkham highways and is currently under the investigations.

According to reports provincial intelligence forces in eastern Nangarhar province discovered and seized more than 18.5 tons of explosives from this province during the past one month.

The mentioned amount of explosives were handed over to the Disarmament Illegal Armed Groups (DIAG) program in this province.
