Would-be bomber shot dead in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): A would-be suicide bomber was killed after sneaking into the Spin Boldak district of southern Kandahar province from Pakistan on Saturday, an official said.

Border police positively identified the bomber and shot him dead at 12.15pm, the governor’s spokesman Javed Faisal told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Police fired at the militant after he ignored warnings to stop, the official said. As a result of police firing, his suicide vest exploded, killing the suspect and wounding a woman and a girl.

3 killed, 15 injured in Spin Boldak attack

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Two militants stormed the Spin Boldak district headquarters in southern Kandahar province on Sunday, killing three tribal elders and wounding 15 others, officials said.

One of the insurgents crashed his explosives-packed vehicle into the government building around 12.00 noon, the district chief told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Mohammad Hashim Agha said the second attacker entered the office complex and blew himself up inside the building where a meeting of the local council was in progress. The roof of the meeting hall collapsed, killing a tribal elder and injuring 15 others.

But the governor’s spokesman, Javed Faisal, said three tribal elders were killed and 15 other people, including three policemen, injured.

The injured were taken to the main district hospital, where some were in critical condition, a doctor said on condition of anonymity.

No one has so far claimed responsibility, but officials often such attacks on the Taliban insurgents.

Insider attack leaves 4 Afghan police dead in Kandahar

According to local authorities in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan  at least 4 Afghan police officers were shot dead by their comrade in the latest wave of insider attacks in this province.
The officials further added at least 3 more officers were wounded following the attack which took place after they were poisoned in their security check post in Spin Boldak district.

Provincial governor spokesman Javid Faisal said the incident took place after one of the Afgan border police officer poisoned his comrades food and opened fire on them.

Mr. Faisal further added the attacker managed to flee the area after the assault while the three injured officers were taken to hospital for treatment purposes.

A spokesman for the Afghan border protection police forces in southern Afghanistan Ghorzan Afridi said security forces have launched an investigation to find out further details behind the incident.

No group including the Taliban militants has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

Police kills 4 colleagues, wounds 3 in southern Afghan town

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- A police constable of Border Police Force in the southern Kandahar province 450 km south of Kabul killed four colleagues and wounded three others in a checkpoint Tuesday night and fled away, Jawed Faisal the spokesman for Kandahar Governor said Wednesday. "The tragic incident took place late last night in a checkpoint in Spinboldak district," Faisal told Xinhua.


Without giving more details, he added that investigation is underway.

Meantime, an official on the condition of anonymity said that the culprit after poisoning the food and killing eight colleagues made his good escape.

Meantime, a Taliban purported spokesman in talks with media via telephone from unknown location described it a new tactic, insisting nine police were killed and few others sustained injuries in the incident.

Taliban penetrated elements, in the past had also targetted NATO-led troops and Afghan security personnel.

Hundreds of Chinese landmines seized in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Hundreds of landmines, made in China, have been seized by border police in the southern province of Kandahar, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said on Wednesday.

A man was arrested in connection with the landmines that were seized from a tractor in the border town of Spin Boldak late on Tuesday, a statement from MoI said. The detainee has confessed to his plan for delivering the bombs to the militants.

Border police official Mohammad Nasir confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the mines were recovered in Yaghi Talab area near the border with Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province.

The tractor had crossed into the district from Pakistan’s soil, the official claimed, saying the 555 anti-personal mines had been handed over to the National Directorate of Security -- Afghanistan’s spy service.

Javed Faisal, the Kandahar governor’s spokesman, also verified the seizure. The detainee was under investigation, he said, refusing to provide further details.

7 ANA soldiers killed in Kandahar attacks

KABUL (PAN): Seven Afghan National Army (ANA) troops were killed and as many injured in two separate roadside bombings in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Saturday.

The first blast that took place in the Panjwai district left five ANA soldiers dead and three others wounded, the 205th Atal Military Corps said in a statement.

The second roadside bomb attack happened in neighbouring Zheri district, killing two ANA service-members and injuring four others, the statement said.

Panjwai district chief Haji Fazl Mohammad confirmed the casualties suffered by the troops, who were on a patrol in the Nakhoni area when a mine tore through their vehicle at around 10pm on Friday night.

The 205th Atal Military Corps said that 10 mines were found and defused during an operation in Panjwai.

A day earlier, a roadside bomb ripped through a vehicle carrying civilians in the Spin Boldak border town, killing six people aboard.

According to police chief Gen. Abdul Raziq, the dead included two women, three children and the driver, all from the same family.

In neighbouring Helmand, armed insurgents opened fire at a passenger vehicle carrying civilians and a policeman in the Musa Qala district, an official said. The policeman travelling in the car and another person, a civilian, were killed in the attack.

A Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said two policemen were killed in the incident.

On the other hand, the Greshk district police chief said that a policeman was injured when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in the Sarband area late on Friday.

Col. Guli Khan said another police officer was injured during a clash with insurgents following the bomb blast.

He also said a child was killed and six of his family members were injured when a Taliban-fired rocket hit their house in the Haiderabad area.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital and they are said to be in a stable condition, the police chief said.

Meanwhile, the provincial intelligence department said three Taliban commanders and two Pakistani spies have been arrested from separate parts of the province.

In a statement, the National Directorate of Security office said the pair had set up a barber shop in Lashkargah and that documents recovered from them showed they spied for Pakistan.

R.I.P. - Staff Sgt. Raul M. Guerra

DOD Identifies Army Casualty
            The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

            Staff Sgt. Raul M. Guerra, 37, of Union City, N.J., died July 4, in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan.

            Guerra was assigned to the 502nd Military Intelligence Battalion, 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

A U.S. Army soldier and Union City native died in Afghanistan last week, his fifth deployment during Operation Enduring Freedom.

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Raul M. Guerra, 37, died July 4 in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense would not confirm how he died. At the time of his death, Guerra was in the midst of his fifth deployment, which had started in May.

Spin Boldak is a town in the southern Kandahar province, on the Pakistan border.

Guerra was a decorated veteran of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, with two Joint Service Commendation Medals topping the list of accolades he received during his service in the military.

Guerra joined the Army in March 1999, completing basic training as a light wheel vehicle mechanic.

He was assigned to Fort Bragg in North Carolina, from where he served three tours in Afghanistan between March 2002 and January 2006.

In 2007, Guerra reclassified and became a human intelligence collector, moving to Fort Stewart in Georgia. From there he served one tour in Iraq from October 2007 through December 2008.

At the time of his death, Guerra was assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord outside of Tacoma, Wash., moving there in July 2011 after a two-year stint stationed in Germany. He deployed in May to Afghanistan with the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade.

Union City Mayor Brian Stack said all flags in the city would be flown at half-staff to honor the late resident.

"My heart goes out to the family," Stack said. "We're very proud he was from Union City, and we thank him for giving his life for freedom."

Attacks foiled on regional conference day: NDS

KABUL (PAN): Afghanistan’s spy service on Sunday revealed that its operatives had prevented suicide attacks in the central capital and southern Kandahar province during a recent regional gathering in Kabul.

National Directorate of Security (NDS) officials arrested four suicide attackers who wanted to reach their target the day (Thursday) the Heart of Asia Conference was taking place in Kabul,” an NDS spokesman said.

Shafiqullah Tahiri told a news conference the Taliban had sent two suicide attackers to target an Afghan military centre in Kabul, but the bombers were arrested before they could execute their plan.

Afghanistan and Turkey said the conference was a success, with regional countries agreeing on joint political consultations and continued cooperation in line with the Istanbul process.

Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul and his Turkish counterpart Ahmad Daud Oglo told a joint news briefing on Thursday the conference was important in building confidence among regional countries.

Identifying the detainees as Rahim Jan and Abdullah, both residents of southern Ghazni province, the NDS official said they were arrested with explosives.

Maulvi Mohammad, a Taliban commander who plotted the suicide attack, had obtained a house on rent in the Ahmad Shah Baba Mina area of Kabul to keep the two there. The pair was being interrogated, Tahiri added.

Similarly, two would-be suicide attackers were detained in the Spin Boldak border town of southern Kandahar province, the NDS official said. The two were riding an auto rickshaw laden with explosives.

They planned to carry out a suicide attack simultaneously with the start of the Heart of Asia Conference in Kabul, Tahiri continued. Residents of Maroof district of Kandahar and northern Kuduz province, the detainees had confessed to their intention of carrying out suicide attacks, he concluded.

14 armed insurgents killed in Badakhshan and Paktiya provinces and two others arrested in Kandahar province

As a result of conflict between Afghan National Border Police and armed insurgents in the Zazai Aryoub District of Paktiya province, last night at 01:30 am, nine armed insurgents were killed.

Also, Afghan National Police confiscated nine AK-47 assault rifles during this conflict.

In the meantime, Afghan National Border Police, Afghan National Civil Order Police and Afghan National Army launched a joint operation in the Bashin region, Argo District of Badakhshan province.

As a result of this operation, five armed insurgents were killed.

Also, during this operation, Afghan National Police discovered amount of light and heavy weapons.

Additionally, Afghan National Border Police arrested two armed insurgents with amount of weapons and 166 radio handsets in the Spin Boldak port, Kandahar province.

Would-be bomber among 7 held in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): A would-be suicide bomber was among seven insurgents detained in a string of intelligence operations in southern Kandahar province over the past week, the governor said on Sunday.

The detainees included three commanders who led their groups, each containing 10 members, in Shah Walikot and Takhta Pul districts against local and foreign troops, Tooryalai Weesa told a press conference in Kandahar City, the provincial capital.

The detainees, who were shown to media personnel at the press briefing at the National Directorate of Security office, confessed to involvement in the insurgency.

A would-be bomber, Asadullah, a resident of Spin Boldak district, told reporters his father had sent him to a religious school in Pakistan’s Bachistan province. But he was trained as a suicide bomber at the school in the Chaman border region.

Weapons and explosives recovered from the detainees were also shown to reporters.

Teenage bombers among 10 detained

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Eight insurgents and two teenage suicide bombers have been detained in Kandahar, Helmand and Uruzgan provinces, officials said on Saturday.

Fifteen-year-old Hanzala, who belongs to Pakistan’s port city of Karachi, confessed to his plans for suicide attacks during preliminary investigations, an intelligence official revealed.

Speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News, the source a rebel -- Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Arghandab district -- wanted to attack government officials in Kandahar. Ahmad said he had been encouraged to wage a jihad by a Taliban commander in the Nalgham area of Kandahar two years ago.

“My name is Hanzala, son of Mir Hatam and resident of Karachi. I was working as vehicle mechanic. While fixing his car, Ghulam Hazrat encouraged me to go with him to Kandahar.

“I received a suicide vest after I accompanied him to Quetta, the capital of Balochistan. After crossing the border into Afghanistan, I was detained in the Spin Boldak border town of Kandahar”, Hanzala said.
He added: “I am an orphan, having a sister and a mother. I hope the government will forgive me.”

Another teenage suicide bomber, Ataullah, was detained in the Mehrabad area of Tirinkot, the capital of Uruzgan, said police spokesman Farid Ayel. He added the 12-year-old visited his office a week ago and sought help in being reunited with his family.

Ataullah said: “I did not want to conduct a suicide attack and surrendered to police.” He wanted to meet his family members as soon as possible.

Another seven militants were detained during separate operations by intelligence operatives in Kajaki, Khanshin and Sangin districts of Helmand province, said the governor’s spokesman, Daud Ahmadi.

Jalalabad Landmine Blast Wounds 11

Eleven people were wounded after a landmine exploded in Jalalabad early this morning, according to Afghan local officials.

"A mine exploded in Jalalabad city of Nangarhar province this morning," provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai told TOLOnews, adding that more police had arrived at the site and were investigating the incident.

The wounded, including seven policemen, were taken to a nearby hospital in the city, he said.

No group, including the Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the blast.

It comes after at least four people were killed and 10 others were wounded in a bomb blast in southern Kandahar province on Wednesday.

The Kandahar blast happened in the Spin Boldak district near an Afghan police checkpoint.

Four people killed in Afghanistan Kandahar bomb blast

Four people have been killed and 10 injured in a bomb blast at a police post close to the Afghan border with Pakistan, Afghan officials say.

The bomb was planted in a motorbike, officials say, and and a woman and a child are among the dead. No-one has claimed responsibility for the attack.


All those killed in the midday blast in Spin Boldak, on the Pakistani border, were civilians, said Zalmai Ayubi, a spokesman for the Kandahar provincial government.

Eight people were wounded in the explosion, including one border police officer, he said.


Spin Boldak in Kandahar province is a busy border crossing close to the Pakistani town of Chaman.

The town is situated 70 miles (110km) from the provincial capital, Kandahar.

Last week a Taliban suicide car bomber killed at least nine people and wounded 10 others in an attack at Jalalabad airport in eastern Afghanistan.

The insurgents said the bombing was in revenge for a Koran-burning incident at a US air base near Kabul a week ago.

An Albanian army officer shot dead, one injured in Afghanistan, 11 Afghan police arrested

Suspected Afghan police opened fire on Albanian and other foreign troops in the war-wracked country’s south Monday, killing anAlbanian soldier and prompting the arrest of 11 Afghan policemen, authorities said.

The death were the first for Albanian troop in Afghanistan. Another international soldier was wounded.

Monday’s shooting occurred in the village of Robat, in the southern district of Spin Boldak near the Pakistani border, Kandahar police chief Abdul Raziq said. The troops were accompanying a USAID team for a meeting about opening two schools and a health cente, Albania’s defense ministry said.

The soldiers “found themselves attacked by a group of persons wearing uniforms of the Afghan police,” Brig. Gen. Viktor Berdo, head of Albanian land forces, told reporters in Tirana.
The Albanian ministry said the remaining soldiers “arrested 11 Afghan policemen who opened fire.”

In Monday’s incident, the attackers opened fire with five assault rifles and one light automatic machine gun, the Albanian Defense Ministry said.

An Albanian captain died later of his wounds in a hospital in the southern city of Kandahar. Albanian officials initially said a corporal also was killed, but later clarified that the soldier was in a coma, adding "there is still hope of improvement."

Another international soldier was wounded in the incident, the ministry said. There was no immediate information on that soldier's nationality.

Albanian President Bamir Topi denounced the attack as a “grave terrorist act” and called for the punishment of those responsible.

Albania has 265 troops in Afghanistan. The two killed were part of a contingent that left Albania in mid-January for six-month tour of duty.

KABUL, Afghanistan – An individual wearing the uniform of the Afghan Uniformed Police turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing one service member.

It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.
