DOD Identifies Army Casualties

            The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
            They died Nov. 16, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device.  They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
            Killed were:
            Spc. James R. Burnett Jr., 21, of Wichita, Kan.; and
            Pfc. Matthew C. Colin, 22, of Navarre, Fla.

KABUL, Afghanistan (Nov. 18, 2011) — A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation throughout the week in Marjeh district, Helmand province.
Insurgents in the area fired at the security patrol during the operation. The patrol returned fire, resulting in the death of an insurgent leader.
The insurgent leader was responsible for planning attacks against Afghan officials.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in Nawah-ye Barakzai district, Helmand province, yesterday.  The force conducted the operation after receiving a tip that insurgent leaders were meeting at a compound in the area.  After calling for the men inside to come out peacefully, the insurgent leaders, with several subordinates, emerged and were detained without incident.
In Now Zad district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered a weapons cache during an operation yesterday. The cache consisted of three rocket-propelled grenades, multiple improvised explosive device components, two anti-personnel mines, 20 flares, and 1,400 rounds of AK-47 ammunition. All of the weapons were destroyed on site and no casualties or damages were reported as a result of the operation.
A coalition security force discovered a weapons cache during a routine patrol in Sangin district, Helmand province, yesterday.  The cache consisted of 40 grenades and 500 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.  The weapons were confiscated by the coalition force and will be destroyed later.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator in Dand district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The facilitator distributed ammunition, heavy weapons, rockets, and mortars to insurgent fighters. The security force confiscated multiple AK-47 assault rifles and ammunition pouches. One additional suspected insurgent was also detained during the operation.
In Sangin district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban facilitator yesterday. The facilitator operates in both Kandahar and Helmand provinces and organizes attacks against coalition forces, placement of roadside bombs and distribution of explosives. The security force seized one rocket-propelled grenade launcher, one PKM machine gun, one AK-47 assault rifle and multiple grenades during the operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Zurmat district, Paktiya province, yesterday. The leader directs insurgents in roadside bomb attacks, constructs and stores roadside bombs and other weapons.
A Taliban leader was captured during a security operation by a combined Afghan and coalition security force in Zurmat district, Paktiya province, yesterday. The leader participated in direct attacks on Afghan forces and operated as part of an insurgent fighter group that worked in coordination with several area insurgent leaders and fighters throughout the region. The security force also detained multiple additional suspected insurgents.
