Al-Qaida militants attack Yemeni police station, 5 killed

map by Evan Centanni. www.polgeonow.com
ADEN, Yemen, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- About three al-Qaida militants attacked a police station in Yemen's southern province of Abyan early Wednesday, killing five policemen and injuring two others, a security official told Xinhua.

The al-Qaida gunmen attempted to break into Jaar's police station in Abyan province but failed, then they tossed powerful grenades on the building, the local security official said on condition of anonymity.

"The home-made grenades exploded inside the police headquarters, killing five policemen and injuring two others at the scene," the security official said.

"The police soldiers backed by counter-terrorism forces started to search for the al-Qaida attackers... We have not made any arrest yet. They will be captured sooner or later," the security official said.

The fresh attack that took place in Jaar town showed that al- Qaida militants were still able to attack government targets.

The Yemeni army has claimed success in its fight against the al- Qaida militants, who are behind two years of violence in the country, but insurgents still carried out attacks after they retreated to mountains.

A string of high-level assassinations struck Yemen's southern regions earlier this year, targeting intelligence and security figures who hunt al-Qaida militants, after government troops drove dozens of terrorists from their main strongholds in Abyan province.

Afghan officials say at least eight insurgents who were planning a mass attack in Kabul were killed in a gun battle that lasted for seven hours.

Lutfullah Mashal, spokesman for the National Directorate of Security, said five of the militants were killed in an initial raid by Afghan troops.

Mashal said three others were killed as the battle continued after dawn at a house in eastern Kabul's Pul-e Charki neighborhood.

Mashal said the militants were armed with suicide vests, rockets, and machine guns.

He said they planned to seize a tall building in Kabul's central Shar-e Naw district.

Security forces raided the house after intelligence officials informed them about the planned suicide attack.

A minivan full of explosives was discovered at the house.

However, the Taliban issued a statement denying that the operation was against their fighters.
