Explosion and gunbattle in Farah leaves dozens killed, injured

A heavy explosion rocked western Farah province of Afghanistan early Wednesday morning. The explosion reportedly took place in front of the provincial court of Farah province.
According to local police officials said a number of the gunmen were looking to enter the court building and clashes between Afghan security forces and the militants are still going on in the area.

Provincial governor spokesman Abdul Rahman Zhwandai confirming the report said clashes between Afghan security forces and militants are still going.

In the meantime provincial security chief Gen. Aqa Noor Kintoz said, around five gunmen in Afghan army uniform attacked the provincial attorney general office. Four of the gunmen were killed and the fifth gunman is still fighting with the Afghan security forces.

He said two of the gunmen detonated explosives packed in a Ford Ranger vehicle near the provincial government compound.

Mr. Aqa Noor also added that the remaining three gunmen entered the court building after the explosion, killing at least 11.

Provincial hospital Abdul Jabar Shaiq said around 70 people including government employees injured following the incident have been taken to the hospital so far.

Taliban group claimed responsibility behind the incident.

Farah court attack toll mounts to 44
FARAH CITY (PAN): Dozens of people were killed and more than 90 others wounded in a well-coordinated insurgent assault on a crowded court in western Farah province on Wednesday, officials said.
Thirty-four civilians, six army soldiers and four policemen were killed in the assault that wounded 91, the interior ministry in Kabul said. Nine attackers were also killed, according to a ministry spokesman.

Seventy-one civilians, 13 policemen and soldiers, two judges and one prisoner are among the injured. Farah Civil Hospital Director Dr. Abdul Hakim Rassouli confirmed receiving the bodies of a policeman, a soldier and two civilians.

But Abdur Rahman Zhwandai, the governor’s spokesman, said three policemen, one soldier and three residents were killed in the audacious bomb-gun attack on the building that house several other departments.

Lt. Gen. Aqa Noor Kentos, the provincial police chief, said the attackers in Afghan army uniforms. Two militants, who got down an Afghan army pick-up, were killed when their own explosives went off, said the police chief.

Four other bombers rushed into the building after the blast. During a subsequent clash with security forces, three of the attackers were shot dead and a third wounded, he said.

Some Taliban detainees were due to appear before the court, he said, indicating the storming of the court was aimed to free the insurgents.

Mohammad Amin, an area resident, said the attackers detonated their explosives-laden vehicle. A short while after the explosion, they forced their way into the compound.

As usual, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. A spokesman for the group, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, said 20 government officials had been killed and many others wounded.

In Several Joint Clearance Operations, 10 Armed Taliban Killed and Arrested

Counterterrorism:

In past 24 hours, Afghan National Police conducted several joint clearance operations with the cooperation of Afghan National Army, NDS and Coalition Forces to clean some of the areas from terrorists and enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan.

The operations were conducted in Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, Ghazni, Paktiya, Helmand and Nimroz provinces, as a result one armed Talib was killed and nine other armed Taliban were arrested by Afghan National Security Forces.                                                                                      

Also, during these operations, Afghan National Police discovered and confiscated some amount of light and heavy round ammunitions.

During the same 24 hour period, Afghan National Police discovered and defused 12 different types of mines placed by enemies of Afghanistan for destructive activities in Kunar, Laghman, Khost, Herat and Helmand provinces.

Counter Crimes:

The 101 Kabul Zone National Police detained seven suspects accused of theft, drug trafficking and assault in the 2nd, 3rd, 12th and 16th Districts of Kabul-City.

Apr. 03., 2013. - ISAF Joint Command Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan - During an operation in Burkah district, Baghlan province today, an Afghan and coalition security force arrested an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leader.

The leader has allegedly led a cell of insurgent fighters in multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He is also accused of training potential fighters in insurgency operations, and serves a vital role in IMU intelligence and improvised explosive device operations throughout Baghlan province.

South

An Afghan and coalition security force detained two insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban facilitator in Dand district, Kandahar province, today. The facilitator is believed to have arranged the transportation of weapons and IEDs throughout Kandahar province for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He has also allegedly ordered subordinates to commit executions and kidnappings against Afghan civilians working with government officials. The security force also seized one PKM machine gun and one grenade as a result of the operation.

During an operation in Nad 'Ali district, Helmand province today, an Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple insurgents while searching for a senior Taliban leader. The leader allegedly has multiple cells of Taliban fighters under his command. He and his subordinates are believed to have participated in numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Helmand province. He is also believed to have plotted the assassination of officials with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The security force also seized one AK-47 and two magazines as a result of the operation.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader and several other insurgents during an operation in Pul-e 'Alam district, Logar province, today. The leader is believed to be responsible for the movement and coordination of multiple insurgent fighters throughout Logar province. He has also been key to the procurement and distribution of weapons for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Apr. 03., 2013. - RC-East operational update

BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces found and safely cleared 11 improvised explosive devices, detained six suspected insurgents and discovered one weapons cache during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, April 2.

Ghazni province
Afghan National Security Forces found and safely cleared three IEDs during operations in the Ghazni district.

Khowst province
Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces detained three suspected insurgents during operations in the Khowst district. The detained suspects were transferred to a base for questioning.

Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces discovered a weapons cache during operations in the Sabari district. The cache contained nine hand grenades and six fuses. Three suspected insurgents were also detained. The detained suspects were transferred to a base for questioning.
