May 04., 2013. - ISAF Joint Command Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader and two other insurgents during an operation in Marjeh district, Helmand province, Afghanistan, today.

The leader has operational control over a group of fighters responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in multiple districts in Marjeh district. He is also key in facilitation of operations in the local area, procuring and distributing weapons and improvised explosive device components to his fighters for use in insurgent activities.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force killed a senior insurgent leader, Saleh Abd Al-Aziz Hamad al-Luhayb, during an operation in Waygal district, Nuristan province, Wednesday. Al-Luhayb, also known as Abu Sulayman, also known as Salman, was a known mortar and explosives expert who participated in attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces. He was a key liaison and trainer to local insurgent commanders in Waygal district and led efforts to establish a permanent foreign fighter presence in the area.

Commandos from the 1st Special Operations Kandak, enabled by coalition forces, arrested a mid-level Taliban leader during an operation in Chaparhar district, Nangarhar province yesterday. This mid-level Taliban leader is involved in the narcotics trade and is responsible for improvised explosives device attacks against coalition forces and GIRoA officials throughout the region.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani facilitator during an operation in Gurbuz district, Khost province, today. The facilitator is responsible for trafficking weapons used in insurgent attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in districts throughout Khost province. He supplies multiple cells of Haqqani fighters. The security force also seized three AK-47s, one pistol, 10 magazines and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition as a result of the operation.

Taliban sniper expert killed in drone strike in Nuristan

A Taliban sniper was killed following a drone strike in eastern Nuristan province of Afghanistan early Thursday morning.
Provincial governor Mohammad Tamim Nuristani confirming the report said Taliban sniper, Turab also known as Khanjar (Knife) was killed around 8am local time in Amshoz village at Waigal district in a drone strike.

The Taliban sniper used to attack Afghan security forces and government officials from remote regions using his sniper rifle.

Nuristan is among the volatile regions in eastern Afghanistan where Taliban militants and other insurgent groups are openly operating, and recently they changed their assault tactic by using sniper rifles to target security forces and government officials.

According to reports, a senior al Qaeda operative for eastern Nuristan province, Abu Sulaiman Yemeni was also killed during a drone strike on Wednesday and was killed.

Abdul Sulaiman Yemeni was responsible for providing procurement and logistic supplies to militants and was one of the prominent al Qaeda leader in Nuristan province.

In the meantime Mohammad Tamim Nuristani said an Afghan police officer was shot dead by Taliban sniper in Barg-e-Matal district around 7:30 am local time on Thursday.

Taliban ambush main security check post in Nuristan province

According to reports, a group of Taliban militants attacked a security check post used by Afghan security forces in central Paron district of eastern Nuristan province.

A local security official speaking on the condition of anonymity said the incident took place around 12:00 am local time on Tuesday and continued until dawn time.

At least 2 Afghan police officers have reportedly been killed following the clashes.

Jangal military check post located in Paron district is considered to be one of the main security check posts located around 10kms away from the center of Paron in Nuristan province.

According to the security officials provincial governor Mohammad Tamim Nuristan and head of the national directorate of security (NDS) have travelled to the area.

Reports also suggest that several Taliban militants have created sanctuaries in the area and are planning to carry out a fresh attack on the security check posts.

8 militants killed in Kamdesh drone strike

JALALABAD (PAN): Eight militants were killed and 28 others wounded in a drone strike by coalition forces in the Kamdesh district of eastern Nuristan province, an official said on Tuesday.

Monday’s raid targeted insurgents in the Bazgal Khulai area, the provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Ghulamullah Khan Nuristani, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“The strike was based on an intelligence tip and came at a time when the militants were discussing their plans at a hideout in the area,” Nuristani said.

All the dead and injured were fighters, confirmed a provincial council member, Inayatullah Mazhabyar. Complete information was hard to receive from the restive area, he added.

With the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) yet to comment on the incident, a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed four civilians had been killed in the drone attack.

According to local authorities in eastern Nuristan province of Afghanistan, at least 30 militants were killed or injured following drone strikes.

The officials further added the airstrikes were carried in Kamdish district.

Provincial security chief Gen. ghullah Nuristani confirming the report said US drones targeted militants in Bazgul valley, killing and injuring at least 30 militants.

Mr. Nuristani said a number of the foreign militants were also among those killed during the airstrike.

He said, “The airstrikes were carried out and around 35 militants including local and foreigners were killed or injured during the attack. The exact number of the militants killed will be confirmed later.”

Kamdish district is among the high volatile region in eastern Nuristan province of Afghanistan. Anti-government armed militant groups yet to comment regarding the drone attack in this province.

Central Bank in Nuristan Robbed by Police Guards

Two of the three local police accused of robbing the Nuristan branch of central bank Da Afghanistan Bank on Thursday night have been captured, but the third suspect and the money is still missing, local officials said Saturday.

The three police officers guarding the central bank branch in Nuristan capital Paroon on Thursday night are accused of robbing as much as 10 million Afghani [US$200,000] and running away, head of the provincial governor's office Mohammad Zarin told TOLOnews.

Two of the police were captured in the Kantiwa area of Paroon on Friday night but the hunt for the third is ongoing.

"Two of them were captured on Friday night by security forces, and police are investigating. It's not yet clear whether they helped steal all the money or not," he said.

Zarin said that initial reports indicate that the money was stolen after most of the locks on the safe deposit boxes were broken.

Meanwhile, local security officials said that some of other bank employees have also been detained as part of the investigation.

Heavy clashes reported in Nuristan province of Afghanistan

According to local authorities in eastern Nuristan province of Afghanistan, heavy clashes between Afghan security forces and anti-government armed militants started in this province early Tuesday morning.

The officials further added the clashes started in Barg-e-Matal district and the militants are still resisting Afghan security forces.

Provincial security chief Ghulamullah Nuristani said militants started attacking Afghan security forces in cooperation with the Pakistani military.

Mr. Nuristani further added militants are fighting Afghan security forces and are armed with modern and heavy military equipments.

He said an Afghan child has been killed following the clashes and the militatns have also suffered casualties however he did not disclose exact details of the militants casualties.

Taliban militants group yet to comment regarding the report.

PARUN, Afghanistan, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- One police and nine Taliban militants were killed as clash erupted in Kamdish district of Nuristan province 180 km east of capital Kabul on Wednesday, police said. "A group of armed Taliban fighters raided Kamdish district headquarters at 04:30 a.m. local time today and police with the support of the national army and air power returned fire, killing nine insurgents on the spot," Ghulam Allah, police inspector general of Nuristan province told Xinhua.

In the gun battle one police was killed and three others sustained injuries, he added.

Meantime, a Taliban purported spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in talks with media via telephone from an unknown location confirmed the clash, claiming several police were killed and injured in the conflict.

Since warring sides in Afghan conflicts exaggerate the casualties of rival side, it is difficult to get verification from independent sources.

July 25., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces conducted a security operation in Waygal district, Nuristan province, yesterday.

During the operation the security force identified the al-Qaida-associated insurgent Khanjar, also known as Turab. The security force engaged Khanjar and killed him.

Khanjar was an insurgent leader with ties to both the al-Qaida terrorist organization and the Taliban insurgency. He provided safe-haven to al-Qaida members operating throughout Nuristan and coordinated Taliban activities in the region. He also oversaw the training of Taliban insurgents in the province.

After the engagement, the security force conducted a follow-on assessment of the area and confirmed no civilians had been harmed and no civilian property had been damaged.

An Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to arrest a Taliban leader in Nawah-ye Barakzai district, Helmand province, today. The Taliban leader is a specialist in the use of improvised explosive devices and directs IED attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout northern Helmand. As a result of the operation, the security force detained multiple suspected insurgents and seized more than 18 kilograms (40 pounds) of explosive material and IED components.

Afghan villagers start fight against Taliban in Laghman

Local residents in eastern Laghman province on Tuesday announced to step up fight against the Taliban militants at Alisheng and Dawlatshah districts in this province.

Chief of the local cultural youth association  Zafar Abbas said local residents started fight against Taliban militants after 2 pm local time today and several villages were cleared off from militants presence during the campaign.

He said the local government for several times struggled to prevent public campaign the Taliban militants in this province.

In the meantime a local tribal elder speaking on the condition of anonymity confirmed the report and said similar campaign will be conducted as it has been conducted in other provinces of Afghanistan including Ghazni, Nuristan and Faryab.

Public campaign against the Taliban militants in a number of provinces of Afghanistan recently also led to violence where several Taliban militants were killed and injured.

In the meantime a spokesman for the Taliban group Zabiullah Mujahid denied public campaign against the Taliban militants and said local militia forces were involved in the fight and not the local residents.

According to local authorities in eastern Nuristan province heavy clashes took place between Taliban militants and Afghan security forces in Wama district in this province.

Provincial governor spokesman Mohammad Zarin confirming the report said the clashes started around 12:00 local time on Tuesday after Afghan security forces ambushed a number of armed militants in Terinik area which is the bordering region between Nuristan and Kunar province.

The militants were looking to ambush the vehicle of Nuristan provincial governor.

Mr. Zarin further added an Afghan police officer was killed and two others were injured following the clashes. However he said there were no reports regarding militants casualties.

He also said clashes between armed militants and Afghan security forces were also reported at Kordar area around 5:00 am local time this morning.

Mohammad Zarin said Tamim Nurstani had travelled to the area for the inauguration of Kordar-Noorgeram highway and was ambushed by armed militants.

Anti-government armed militant groups yet to comment regarding the reports.

Local residents clash with Taliban in eastern Afghanistan

According to local authorities in eastern Paktiya and Nuristan provinces of Afghanistan local residents resisted against hundreds of Taliban militants and forced to pull back from these provinces.

Paktiya deputy provincial governor Abdul Rahman Mangal said around 400 Taliban militants attacked Mirazka district in this province early Monday morning around 2 am.

Mr. Mangal further added the assailant militants wanted to destroy district compound however Afghan security forces backed by local residents resisted the Taliban fighters.

He also said Taliban militants have left the district and at least 1 Afghan police and 2 Taliban militants were killed following clashes.

In the meantime local residents in eastern Nuristan province said local residents resisted and clashed with the Taliban fighters in this province.

Mawlawi Ahmadullah Mohid Afghan parliament member representing easern Nuristan province said Taliban militants were looking to close schools and religious Madrasas after NATO troops carried out airstrike against militants safe havens in this province.

This comes as local residents in Andar district of eastern Ghazni province resisted and clashed with the Taliban militants to reopen the schools and health clinics in this province.

Earlier local residents in northern Faryab province resisted against the Taliban militants at Almar district.

20 rebels killed in massive Nuristan assault

JALALABAD (PAN): Hundreds of heavily armed militants, mostly Pakistanis, attacked security posts in two villages in the Kamdish district of eastern Nuristan province, sparking a fierce gun-battle, officials said on Friday.

The skirmishes in Pirok and Binoz villages erupted early on Friday morning, with both sides claiming to have inflicted heavy casualties.

The governor's spokesman, Mohammad Zarin, told Pajhwok Afghan News hundreds of militants laced with heavy weapons attacked the two villages near the Pakistani border.

He claimed the Pirok village was completely torched during the clash and 20 attackers, most of them Pakistani fighters, have so far been killed.

He added bodies of the slain insurgents were still lying there. However, he had no information if civilians suffered any casualties because the clash in one of the villages was still ongoing.

Zarin said the clash in Pirok village had ended, but was ongoing in Binoz village. He added they had called for assistance from the defence and interior ministries and international troops.

A border police spokesman Mohammad Idrees Mohmand said a key Taliban commander identified as Maulvi Abbas was among 25 rebels killed in the clash.

But a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, told Pajhwok over the telephone that nine security check posts were seized and 15 security personnel were killed during clashes in Kamdish district.

He also confirmed that the clash was still ongoing, with the fighters occupying more security posts.

He acknowledged the death of only two fighters in the clash, but stopped short of giving information about who torched the Pirok village.

Security officials said an estimated 60 to 80 militants launched the massive attack on Afghan National Police (ANP) checkposts at around 3am.

The militants used small arm and rocket-propelled grenade during the hours-long clashes.

According to local authorities in eastern Nuristan province at least 12 Taliban militants were killed following clashes with the Afghan border protection police forces in this province.

The officials further added the incident took place at Kamdish district around 8:00 am local time and continued for several hours.

Provincial security chief Gen. Ghulamullah Khan confirming the report said the incident took place after Afghan border protection forces ambushed a group of the Taliban militants at Kamdish district on Tuesday.

Gen. Ghulamullah said the clashes took place at Butigul area in Kamdish district, adding that at least 5 bodies of the Taliban militants were left at the scene of the clashes and 3 others who were injured were taken by the Taliban group.

One Afghan border protection police officer was also injured during the clashes. Taliban group yet to comment regarding the report.

Laghman: 12 Insurgents and Their Commander Killed in Afghan Forces Operation

At least 12 insurgents, including their commander, were killed in an Afghan security forces operation in eastern Laghman province on Tuesday night, local officials said.

Six others insurgents were wounded in the operation, which is ongoing.

The operation was launched in Alingar district of Laghman province to clear the area of insurgents, a spokesman of the Selab 201 military corps in eastern Afghanistan Noman Atifi said.

During the operation, the local insurgent commander Baryalai was killed and the Afghan forces seized many weapons, he said.

There were no Afghan and civilians casualties during the operation, Atifi added.

Alingar district borders with Nuristan province where insurgents have been actively targeting Afghan and coalition forces.

17 shun militancy, turn a new leaf in Nuristan

JALALABAD (PAN): Seventeen rebels laid down their arms and joined the government-initiated peace process in eastern Nuristan province, officials said on Monday.

Lead by Qari Abdul Khalil, the insurgents surrendered five weapons, a rocket launcher, some explosives and remote-controlled bombs, Governor Tamim Nuristani told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Khalil, an influential Taliban member who was also involved in attacks against government and foreign troops in Waigal district, gave up the insurgency and joined the reconciliation drive. 

Provincial peace process head, Haji Abdul Alim, said Khalil’s decision would help improve the security situation in the province, bordering Afghanistan.

Nuristani added the implementation of socio-economic programmes and   development projects had encouraged the insurgents join the peace process.

Afghan forces kill 25 Taliban militants: official

ASSADABAD, Afghanistan, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Afghan forces have killed 25 Taliban militants over the past two days in Nuristan province, 180 km east of capital city Kabul, spokesman for provincial administration Mohammad Zarin said Friday.

"In the operation backed by NATO-led forces and launched against Taliban in Kamdish district on Thursday, so far 25 insurgents have been killed," Zarin told Xinhua.

Meantime, Taliban purported spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in talks with media via telephone from unknown location confirmed the fighting but insisted 30 Afghan and foreign forces had been killed, a claim rejected by Zarin as baseless.

Mujahid also stated that eight Taliban fighters had been killed in the battle.

The mountainous Kamdish district has been under mounting pressure by Taliban over the past couple of weeks; while Afghan government is trying to ensure lasting peace there.

KABUL, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Five militants were killed by police in a clash after the Taliban launched an attack on a check point in the eastern Afghan province of Nuristan, the country's Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

"Five Taliban militants, including a senior commander of the insurgents namely Mullah Abdul Rahim, were killed after the Afghan National Police (ANP) repelled their attack on a police check point in Kamdish district of Nuristan province Friday night," the ministry said in a statement.

Four militants were also injured in the clash while there were no casualties on the ANP, the statement added.

Taliban militants fighting Afghan and NATO troops have yet to make comments.

Afghan forces and NATO-led coalition troops have intensified cleanup operations against the Taliban and other militant groups across the country recently as spring and summer, known as " fighting season", are drawing near. Over 350 insurgents have been killed and more than 840 others detained during military operations in the country so far this year, according to the Afghan Interior Ministry.

Taliban commander detained in Nuristan province

According to local officials in eastern Afghanistan, Afghan security forces arrested two suspects who were planting roadside bombs in eastern Nuristan province.

The officials further added, a local Taliban commander was also detained by Afghan security forces in this province.

Nuristan provincial police chief Shams-ur-Rahman Nuristani confirming the reports said, Afghan police forces managed to arrest a Taliban commander Hazrat Nabi and two other militants who was planting roadside bomb following an operation at Noorgeram and Alingar districts.

Mr. Nuristani further added, the suspects were detained based on the intelligence reports.

He also said, the detained Taliban commander confessed to his links with the Taliban group.

In the meantime, a spokesman for the Taliban group Zabiullah Mujahid denied the reports and said that there is no Taliban commander with the name of Hazrat Mohammad.
