June 05., 2013. - ISAF Joint Command Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force killed a senior Taliban leader, Obaidullah Jan, and two other extremists during an operation in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province, yesterday.

Jan had operational control of a group of fighters responsible for conducting numerous ambushes and other attacks against Afghan and coalition fighters. He also facilitated the movement of weapons and military equipment to local Taliban cells and was involved in the construction and emplacement of improvised explosive devices.

In other International Security Assistance Force news throughout Afghanistan:

South

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban facilitator and one other extremist during an operation in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, today. The facilitator is responsible for procuring weapons and military equipment for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also assists in the coordination and execution of those attacks and maintains several weapons caches. During the operation, a group of extremists set up a fighting position against the security force. The force engaged the insurgents, killing three. The security force also seized one AK-47 and two AK-47 magazines as a result of the operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban facilitator and three other extremists during an operation in Zharay district, Kandahar province, today. The facilitator procures bomb-making material, constructs improvised explosive devices and emplaces completed IEDs in Zharay district, targeting Afghan and coalition forces. He also serves as a financier for local Taliban cells.

East

More than 600 members of the Afghan National Security Force gathered in Laghman Province on Monday to execute a clearing operation in the areas surrounding Nawrah and Hakimabad villages to identify and neutralize improvised explosive devices planted by enemies of Afghanistan. Members of the Provincial Response Company, National Directorate of Security, Afghan Local Police, Afghan National Army, Afghan Uniform Police and Investigative Surveillance Unit, supported by the Provincial Chief of Police and coalition advisers, all participated in the operation which uncovered 12 IEDs that were immediately neutralized by the ANSF. The ANSF effort is to disrupt the extremist’s ability to threaten the local populace and inflict harm to the residents.

BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security and coalition forces detained 10 suspected insurgents, discovered one weapons cache and found and safely cleared six improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, April 22.

The detained suspects were transferred to a base for questioning. The cache contained 34 IEDs and homemade explosive materiel.

BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces discovered two weapons caches, and found and safely cleared one improvised explosive device during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, April 5.

Khowst province

Afghan National Security Forces discovered a weapons cache during operations in the Sabari district. The cache contained one small-arms weapon, one AK-47, multiple magazines and ammunition.

Laghman province

Afghan National Security Forces discovered a weapons cache during operations in the Mehtar Lam district. The cache contained four IEDs.

Wardak province

Afghan National Security Forces found and safely cleared one IED during operations in the Maidan Shahr district.

Donkey bombing leaves policeman dead

MAHTARLAM (PAN): One local policeman was killed and three others were injured when an explosives-laden donkey was detonated in eastern Laghman province, an official said on Friday.

The explosives tied to the animal went off near a police checkpoint in the Tingor area of Alingar district late on Thursday, the governor’s spokesman said.

Sarhadi Zwak told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Taliban were behind the remote-controlled bomb attack. But there was no immediate word from the insurgent movement.

Area resident Abdul Ali confirmed the incident, saying the explosives had been concealed in a bag placed on the donkey’s back.

12 militants killed in Laghman airstrike

JALALABAD (PAN): A dozen militants, including three of their commanders, were killed in an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) airstrike in Mehtarlam, the capital of eastern Laghman province, an official said on Monday.               

The incident took place on Sunday night in the Abuzai area on the outskirt of the city, a spokesman for the 201st Selab Military Corps, Col. Mohammad Noman Hatifi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.  

He said the rebels came under attack when they were meeting. Their bodies, still lying at the scene, would be handed over to locals, the spokesman added.

20 insurgents killed in Laghman, Ghazni

JALALABAD/GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Twenty insurgents, including three suicide bombers, were killed and several others wounded by security forces in eastern Laghman and southern Ghazni province, officials said on Wednesday. 

Fifteen fighters have been killed and 17 others wounded during an ongoing operation by the Afghan army and police in the Alingar district of Laghman, Sarhadi Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He claimed four villages --- Kachoor, Hakimabad, Noori and Salingar -- had been cleared of militants as a result of the operation. The dead included rebel commanders Qari Almas and Omari, as well as four Pakistani citizens.

Security personnel had also captured 21 kilograms of opium from the house of a local Taliban commander named Mullah Ghafoor, Zwak said.

A Taliban spokesman, meanwhile, acknowledged the loss of only three militants and injuries to five others in Laghman. Zabihullah Mujahid claimed the fighters had killed 10 security personnel and torched three vehicles in clashes.

Separately, a suicide bomber was among five guerrillas killed as a result of an airstrike by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in the Andar district of Ghazni, said the administrative head of the town, Mohammad Qasim Desiwal.

A car driver was hired to take suspected militants to the district centre or Ghazni City, Desiwal said, explaining the four fighters intended to attack security personnel. But ISAF targeted them before reaching their target, the district chief added.

On the other hand, a resident of the area, Lutfullah, said that were six people in the car, including the driver, were killed in the air raid.

Bridge blown up in Laghman

JALALABAD (PAN): A bridge has been blown up by unidentified miscreants in the Alingar district of eastern Laghman province, an official said on Thursday.

Built three years ago at a cost of $700,000, the bridge in Abuzai area was used by a large number of district residents, the governor’s spokesman, Sarhadi Zwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Governor Dr. Fazlullah Mujaddedi said he had directed security personnel to bring the perpetrators of the blast to justice as soon as possible.

8 militants killed in Laghman offensive

JALALABAD (PAN): Eight militants were killed and 18 others wounded during operations in different parts of eastern Laghman province, an official said on Monday.

The operations were conducted by Afghan forces in Abuzai, Ramal, Katal, Maidani, Shaheed Baba, Noora, Syed Qala, Agha Kalai, Basram and Badiabad areas.

As a result of the offensives, militants were driven from the areas, the governor’s spokesman, Sarhadi Zwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Two policemen were also killed and three others injured during the operations that led to the seizure of 22 anti-personnel landmines and two missiles.

But Khyber Zaheer, introducing himself as a local militant commander, rejected the gubernatorial spokesman’s claim regarding insurgent casualties.

Senior woman official shot dead in Afghanistan

Najia Siddiqi, a senior official, was shot dead Monday in Afghanistan's Laghman province, the authorities said.
Siddiqi was the acting director of Provincial Women's Affairs. She was killed in a drive-by shooting in provincial capital Mehtarlam city in eastern Laghman province Monday morning, a spokesman for the provincial government said.

"Siddiqi was on her way to office when gunmen ridding a motorbike opened fire on her vehicle at about 8 a.m.," spokesman Sarhadi Zhawak told Xinhua.

Siddiqi died of her wounds on the way to the hospital, he said.

He said Siddiqi was appointed to the post after the former director of the women department Hanifah Safai was killed in a bombing in July in the province some 90 km east of Afghan capital Kabul.

Also Monday, the provincial police chief of southwestern province of Nimroz was killed in a bombing.

No group claimed responsibility for the Monday's attacks.

15 Armed Taliban Killed in Laghman Province

Afghan National Police, Afghan National Army, NDS and Coalition Forces launched a joint clearance operation in the Abozai village, Mahtarlam City capital of Laghman province last night and the operation is still going on.

As a result of this operation, 15 armed Taliban were killed including a local commander of Taliban (Dr.Zamary) and six other armed Taliban were wounded.

Also, during this operation, Afghan National Security Forces discovered and confiscated 15 different types of weapons consist of: two rocket launchers and one PKM machine gun.

Also, during this operation no ANSF member was harmed.

5 Afghan soldiers killed following blast in Laghman

According to local authorities in eastern Laghman province of Afghanistan, at least 5 Afghan National Army soldiers were killed following an improvised explosive device blast in this province.

Provincial governor spokesman Sarhadi Zwak confirming the report said the incident took place after an Afghan national army vehicle struck with a roadside bomb at Todi-Cheni district.

Taliban militants group claimed responsibility behind the incident.

In the meantime Afghan defense ministry following a statement on Thursday announced at least 14 militants were killed following military operations by Afghan national army.

The source further added Afghan national army soldiers are also detained four militants and defused at least 16 improvised explosive device during the operations.

The operations were conducted in Mizan and Qalat city of eastern Zabul province of Afghanistan.

Anti-government armed militant groups yet to comment regarding the reports.

NATO troops convoy attacked in Laghman province

According to local authorities in eastern Laghman province of Afghanistan, a relatively heavy explosion rocked Mehtarlam city in this province early Tuesday morning.

Provincial governor spokesman Sarhadi Zwak confirming the report said the incident took place in Basram village while a convoy of the coalition forces were crossing the area and were attacked by Rocket Propelled Grenade Launchers. The NATO troops convoy were moving from Noor Gram district to Mehtarlam city when the incident took place.

Coalition security forces did not suffer any casualties following the incident, provincial governor spokesman Sarhadi Zwak confirmed.

This comes as Mr. Zwak earlier said a NATO vehicle was damaged following the blast however there is no report regarding the casualties.

Sarhadi Zwak said the area has been cordoned off and NATO aircrafts are moving on the area.

In the meantime a spokesman for the Taliban group Zabiullah Mujahid said all NATO troops in the vehicle were killed following the blast.

NATO-led International Coalition Security Forces yet to comment regarding the report.

3 IED planters perish in airstrike

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Three mine planters were killed during an airstrike by foreign forces in southern Helmand and Kandahar provinces, officials said on Monday.

An insurgent commander, who wanted to plant a roadside bomb, was killed in an air raid by foreign troops in the Bolan area of Lashkargah late on Sunday, the governor's office said. 

Two other mine planters were killed in the Maiwand district of Kandahar province, said the governor's spokesman, Jawed Faisal. He told Pajhwok Afghan News the men were killed before they could plant the landmines.

Separately, one Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier was killed and another injured in a roadside bombing in eastern Laghman province, said Sarhadi Zwak, the governor's spokesman. The explosion took place in the Badiabad area of Alingar district.
