Taliban suffer casualties in clashes with Afghan villagers

According to local security officials in eastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan, heavy casualties were incurred to Taliban militants following clashes with the local residents in this province.

Provincial National Directorate of Security NDS chief Syed Amir Shah Sadat confirming the report said clashes between Taliban militants and local residents started after Taliban attacked villagers of Koh-Nesf in Andar district.

Mr. Sadat further added local residents clashed with the Taliban militants which continued for several hours.

He said dead bodies of two Taliban militants among several killed or injured were left in the area.

Taliban militants group yet to comment regarding the reports.

This comes as resistance fighting has raged in a number of provinces of Afghanistan by local residents against the Taliban militants in a bid to prevent insurgency activities in their local villages and areas.

Meanwhile a spokesman for the Taliban group Zabiullah Mujahid earlier said resistance fighters were supported by US and Afghan government and is militia forces not local residents.

3 policemen killed in attack in NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- At least three policemen were killed and several others injured when unknown gunmen opened fired at a police vehicle in Pakistan's northwest town of Hangu on Thursday morning, reported local Urdu TV channel Dunya.

The incident took place at about 10:00 a.m. local time when unknown gunmen ambushed a police vehicle on a routine patrol in the Kotki area of Hangu, a town located some 200 kilometers southwest of the country's capital Islamabad.

District Commission Officer of Hangu has confirmed the attack.

At least two policemen were also injured in the attack, said the report.

Other details about the attack are not immediately available.

Over the last few months, Pakistani Taliban have launched a series of attacks on army, security forces and police.

On July 9, Taliban militants launched an attack on an army camp in the country's eastern province of Punjab, killing seven people, including six troopers and one policeman.

A few days later, on July 12, they stormed a hostel where jail policemen from the country's northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were put up for training in Lahore, capital city of Punjab, killing nine policemen and wounding three others.

On August 16, Taliban launched a pre-dawn suicide attack on an airbase in the country's northwest area of Kamra, in which all the nine attackers and two security personnel were killed and one military cargo plane was slightly damaged by the rocket-propelled grenades fired by the militants from outside the base.

Local observers believe that with the pass of Ramadan, a holy month for Muslims which ended on Aug. 19, militants may launch more terror attacks.

Explosion hit NATO troops convoy in northern Afghanistan

According to local authorities in northern Parwan province of Afghanistan, a convoy of the NATO-led International Coalition Security Forces struck with a roadside improvised explosive device in this province.

The officials further added the exact details regarding the casualties as a result of the today’s incident are not known yet.

The incident took place early Thursday morning in Khanqa area in Bagram district.

Bagram district chief Abdul Shakoor Qudoosi said the incident took place while NATO troops were patrolling in the area.

He said a vehicle of the NATO troops was damaged following the blast.

In the meantime Taliban militants group claimed responsibility behind the incident.

Zabiullah Mujahid spokesman for the Taliban group said heavy casualties were incurred to NATO troops as a result of today’s attack.

Aug. 23., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban weapons supplier in Chaparhar district, Nangarhar province, today.

The weapons supplier acquired and distributed mortars and other weapons to Taliban fighters in the district. In the weeks prior to his arrest, he delivered multiple weapons to Taliban fighters in the area.

During the operation, an armed insurgent threatened the security force. The security force engaged and killed him.

The security force also detained one additional suspected insurgent.

North

An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents in an operation to arrest a senior Taliban leader in Chimtal district, Balkh province, yesterday. The Taliban leader is responsible for indirect fire and improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

South

An Afghan and coalition security force discovered a narcotics cache during an operation in Panjwai district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The cache included 545 kilograms (1,201 pounds) of marijuana. The security force also detained one suspected insurgent. The drugs were destroyed by the security force on site.

BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Afghan and coalition forces killed six insurgents, detained four and cleared three improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, Aug. 22.

Ghazni Province
Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces found and safely cleared two IEDs in Andar District.

Khowst Province
Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces detained two insurgents during an engagement in Khowst District. The detained suspects were transferred to a base for questioning.

Kunar Province
A coalition airstrike killed an insurgent in Asadabad District in response to Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces receiving indirect fire.

Logar Province
Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces detained two insurgents during an engagement in Muhammad Aghah District. The detained suspects were transferred to a base for questioning.

Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces found and safely cleared an IED in Charkh District.

Wardak Province
A coalition airstrike killed three insurgents in Chak-E Wardak District in response to an imminent threat towards Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces.

A coalition airstrike killed two insurgents in Chak-E Wardak District in response to Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces receiving small arms fire.
