Pakistan military: 2 killed in army base suicide bomb attack

Islamabad (CNN) -- Two soldiers were killed early Wednesday by a pair of suicide bombers who detonated their car when they were stopped from entering an army base, Pakistan's military said.

The car exploded outside the Zarai Noor Camp, in Wana, South Waziristan, after it was signaled to a halt by soldiers, a military statement said.

"The sentries on duty spotted the suicide bomber at least 100 meters from the camp. Both suicide bombers were blown up in the explosive-laden car," it said.

Two security forces personnel were killed and four more injured by the blast.

The attack took place in Pakistan's ungoverned tribal region along the Afghanistan border, a stronghold of the Pakistan Taliban.

3 Militants Killed After Ambushing Afghan Forces

The Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) killed three insurgents after being ambushed near Tana Village, Chamkani District, Paktiya Province, Dec. 3.

The patrol was pinned down by small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire. After ensuring the area was clear of civilians, the area was clear of civilians, the joint patrol called for air support killing three insurgents. The patrol was able to clear the remainder of the route to their compound, and ensure the area was free of insurgent activity.

While advising the Patrol Commander, a Special Operations Task Force-East Operations Officer said, “Even with the large amount of insurgents in the area, the ANSF are effectively countering their actions, making them unable to intimidate and attack the civilians of the remote village.”

No civilian or Afghan National Security Forces were injured or killed during the engagement.

DOD Identifies Marine Casualty

            The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

            Lance Cpl. Anthony J. Denier, 26, of Mechanicville, N.Y., died Dec. 2, while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

MECHANICVILLE — A 26-year-old Marine from Mechanicville was killed Sunday by enemy fire while on foot patrol in the Marjeh District of Afghanistan, military authorities said on Monday.

Lance Cpl. Anthony J. Denier, who joined the Marines nearly two years ago, was pronounced dead at 10:45 a.m. Sunday after an enemy bullet hit him in the neck, said First Sgt. Stephen Griffin of the U.S. Marine Corps.

The wounded Marine was airlifted from the combat scene but was pronounced dead when he arrived at a military medical facility, Griffin said.

Denier’s body is expected to arrive sometime today at the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

Ann Denier of Mechanicville, Anthony Denier’s aunt, said Anthony usually called his mother, Mary Denier Morgan, each Sunday morning from Afghanistan.

“She was just waiting for the call when she heard a knock on her door,” Ann Denier said. The visitors were two Marines coming to tell her that her son had been killed in combat.

“He was a very good person and we were proud of him. He was presented with medals and awards while in the Marines,” his aunt said.

Anthony was not married. He is survived by his mother, a father who lives in Florida, and two older sisters who live in Gloversville.

‘died a hero’

Before he deployed to Afghanistan, Anthony Denier came home for 10 days from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The Deniers held a family gathering in his honor before he departed Oct. 26.

“The whole family was there,” Ann Denier said.

John Denier of River Road, Anthony’s uncle, said the Marines told the family that Anthony Denier “died a hero, defending his country.”

The Mechanicville native, who graduated from Mechanicville High School, had been a house and commercial painter before joining the Marines. He was a member of the Third Battalion, 9th Marines, Regimental Combat Team No. 7 of the First Marine Division (Forward). His stateside post was Camp Lejeune.

The DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home in Mechanicville is in charge of funeral arrangements

Thomas Salvadore said Monday that Denier’s body is expected to arrive sometime today at Dover Air Force Base. It will be four to seven days before the body is flown to Albany International Airport.

The body will be met in Albany by a Marine Corps honor guard and family members.

Salvadore said there will be calling hours at the American Legion Post 91 on South Main Street in Mechanicville. The funeral services will also be held at the American Legion post but times and dates are still being finalized. Burial will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in the town of Saratoga.

Mechanicville Supervisor Thomas Richardson said Monday that he did not know Anthony Denier personally but knows members of the Denier family.

“It’s a nice family. I’m sure he was a fine young man. It’s absolutely a tragedy,” Richardson said.

“There’s not a word in the dictionary to express it. I feel terrible for the family. It’s a bad day for everyone,” he said.

Dec. 05., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in Watahpur district, Kunar province, yesterday that resulted in the death of the insurgent leader, Mohammed Yar Gul, and two other insurgents.

The facilitator oversaw the transfer of improvised explosive device materials to insurgents, and directed the emplacement of IEDs against Afghan and coalition forces. Suicide Bomber Targets Pakistani Police Station

PESHAWAR: A suicide bomber on Tuesday rammed his explosive-laden car into a checkpoint outside a police station in Bannu, wounding six people, police said.
“Four policemen and two civilians were wounded after a suicide bomber blew up his car at the checkpoint,” senior police official Nisar Ahmad Tanoli told AFP.

The blast damaged the outer wall of the police station and two houses near the checkpoint, he said.

Taliban militants immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

“We carried out the suicide attack on the police station… we will not spare them and target them again,” Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told AFP on phone from an unknown location.

“We will continue to target police and security forces because they are killing our mujahideen (fighters),” he added.

5 killed, 9 injured following blast in Uruzgan province

According to local authorities in southern Uruzgan province of Afghanistan at least 14 Afghan civilians were killed or injured following an explosion in in this province.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon killing at least 3 Afghan civilians and two Afghan security forces while.

Provincial security spokesman Farid Ayel confirming the report said a woman and child was also among those killed following the blast which took place near the Afghan intelligence department in Tarinkowt city.

Uruzgan is is among the volaltile regions in southern Afghanistan where Taliban militants and other insurgents groups are openly operating in various districts.

Militants are frequently using improvised explosive device to target Afghan and coalition security forces but in majority of cases Afghan civilians are suffering from such bombings.

At least 10 Afghan civilians were killed after their vehicle struck with the roadside bomb in Dehrawood district.

In the meantime local security officials said they have launched an operation to clear the area from the militants activities and unconfirmed reports suggest at least 61 militants have been killed during the operations.

Farid Ayel spokesman for the provincial security commandment said the incident on Monday took place after explosives packed in a motorcycle went off in the area.

He said preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion took place as a result of a remote controlled bomb.

No group including the Taliban militants has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

The leader controlled a group of insurgents operating in the district and facilitated the acquisition and distribution of ammunition and weapons to fighters in the area. He also oversaw improvised explosive device and suicide attacks in Maiwand.

The security force also detained three suspected insurgents as a result of the operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a local Taliban leader in Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province, today. The leader was directly responsible for the emplacement of improvised explosive devices and numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the district.

Yesterday, during an operation in Chahar Burjak district, Nimroz province, an Afghan and coalition security force discovered a drug cache. The cache contained 2290kg (5,049 pounds of dry opium, 250 kg (551 pounds) of wet opium and 50 kg (110 pounds) of heroin. The combined force destroyed the drugs on site.

An Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in Kajaki district, Helmand province, Sunday that resulted in the death of several insurgents. During the operation, the combined force also seized 250 kg (551 pounds) of opium, and a large quantity of drug making equipment. The combined force destroyed all the drugs and drug-related equipment on site.

In Shahid-e-Hasa district, Uruzgan province, Sunday, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation that resulted in the death of several insurgents including Qayum, a local Taliban leader responsible for planning attacks against Afghan and coalition troops in the area. During the operation the combined force also detained multiple suspected insurgents.

On Sunday, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in Tarin Kowt district, Uruzgan province that resulted in the death of Maulawi Tayeb, a local Taliban leader. Tayeb planned and conducted attacks against Afghan government officials and was directly involved in numerous improvised explosive attacks in the region.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force conducted a security operation in Musa Khel district, Khost province, today that resulted in the arrest of a Haqqani leader who conducted attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and supplied Haqqani insurgents with weapons and ammunition. During the operation, the security force also detained two suspected insurgents and seized weapons and ammunition.

In Chak-e Wardak district, Wardak province, today, an Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader who oversees a local group of insurgents and has conducted numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. During the operation, the combined force killed two insurgents and seized weapons, ammunition and several grenades.
