Aug. 27., 2012. - RC-East operational update

BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Afghan and coalition forces killed four insurgents, detained two, located three weapons caches and cleared nine improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, Aug. 26.

Ghazni province
Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces found and safely cleared three improvised explosive devices, one in Ghazni district, one in Gelan district and one in Dehyak district.

Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces detained an insurgent during an engagement in Andar district. The detained suspect was transferred to a base for questioning.

Khowst province
Afghan Border Police and coalition forces discovered a weapons cache in Gurbuz district. The cache contained improvised explosive device making materials.

Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces discovered a weapons cache in Sabari district. The cache contained a radio, small arms and ammunition, and military clothing.

Logar province
Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces found and safely cleared two improvised explosive devices, one in Pul-E Alam district and one in Khoshi.

Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces killed two insurgents during an engagement in Pul-E Alam district.

Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces discovered a weapons cache in Khoshi district. The cache contained 142 mortar rounds, 23 rockets and small arms ammunition.

Paktika province
Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces found and safely cleared an improvised explosive device in Yahya Khel district.

Paktiya province
Afghan Border Police and coalition forces detained an insurgent during an engagement in Jaji district. The detained suspect was transferred to a base for questioning.

Wardak province
Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces found and safely cleared three improvised explosive devices in Sayyidabad district.

Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces killed two insurgents during an engagement in Nerkh district.

Operations in RC-East are still ongoing.

Taliban behead 15 men, 3 women in Helmand province

According to local authorities in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan, Taliban militants on Sunday night beheaded a number of Afghan civilians after attacking a party around 10:00 pm local time in this province.

Provincial governor spokesman Daud Ahmadi confirming the report said at least 18 civilians including 3 women were beheaded by the Taliban militants.

Mr. Ahmadi further added the incident took place in Roshanabad village in Mosaqa Qala district.

He said the main motive behind the execution of the civilians is not clear yet however he said Afghan security forces have launched an investigation in this regard.

In the meantime Mosa Qala district chief Nematullah said Taliban militants beheaded 15 men and 3 women who had participated in a musical event.

Taliban militants group yet to comment regarding the report.

2 NATO troops shot dead by Afghan army soldier on Monday

At least two NATO soldiers were killed following an attack by Afghan national army in eastern Afghanistan on Monday.

NATO-led International Security Assistance Force following a statement announced, “Two International Security Assistance Force service members died when a member of the Afghan National Army turned his weapon against ISAF service members in eastern Afghanistan today.”

The source further added, “ISAF troops returned fire, killing the ANA soldier who committed the attack. “

Afghan and ISAF officials are investigating the incident, ISAF said following the statement.

The source did not disclose further information regarding the exact location of the incident and nationalities of the deceased soldiers.

International Security Assistance Force generally do not disclosse identities of the NATO soldiers killed in Afghanistan saying, “It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.”

So far this year, 32 “green-on-blue” attacks (the phrase comes from the colors that the U.S. military assigns in exercises to “host nation” and “friendly” forces) have killed 40 members of coalition forces and wounded 69, versus 16 attacks that resulted in 28 dead and 43 wounded during the same period in 2011.

KABUL, Afghanistan – Two International Security Assistance Force service members died when a member of the Afghan National Army turned his weapon against ISAF service members in eastern Afghanistan today.

ISAF troops returned fire, killing the ANA soldier who committed the attack.

Afghan and ISAF officials are investigating the incident.

It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.

Senior Haqqani leader Badruddin Haqqani killed, says family

Haqqani family confirmed the death of Badruddin Haqqani, the third son of Jalaluddin Haqqani and a senior commander of the Taliban group who was killed following a US drone strike last Wednesday.

A family member of the Haqqani said he was killed in Pakistan’s North Wazrisitan.

The death of Badruddin Haqqani will be considered a major achievement in war against terrorism if the death of Badruddin Haqqani is true however the rumors have not been independently confirmed so far.

Badruddin Haqqani is the founder of the Haqqani Network and was one of the senior and active members of the Haqqani Network despite the eldest son of Jalaluddin Haqqani currently rules the network.

He was formally designated to collect funds, direct insurgency activities and was heading the administration of the Haqqani Network.

The Haqqani Network has carried out some of the major coordinated attacks against the US and NATO troops and Afghan government during the recent years.

One of the major attack was carried out in June 2011 on Kabul Intercontinental Hotel while another coordinated attack was carried out by Haqqani Network on US embassy and a number of other high profile areas in capital Kabul during the September 2011.

DOD Identifies Army Casualty
            The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

            Pfc. Patricia L. Horne, 20, of Greenwood, Miss., died Aug. 24 in Bagram, Afghanistan.  She was assigned to the 96th Aviation Support Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

33 Taliban, 3 ANA troops killed in latest Afghan violence

Afghan defense ministry officials following a statement on Sunday announced, at least 9 Afghan national army soldiers were killed or injured following militants attack and improvised explosive device blasts across the country.

The source further added one Afghan soldier killed and five others were injured after an improvised explosive device went off in eastern Ghazni province.

In a separate incident in Shegal district of eastern Kunar province an Afghan national army soldier was killed in militants attack.

Meanwhile another Afghan soldier was killed and another was injured in eastern Logar province of Afghanistan.

Afghan national army soldiers also seized some weapons ammunitions during the military operations, Afghan defense officials said adding that Afghan soldiers seized at least 9 improvised explosive devices from Helmand, Kunar and Farah provinces of Afghanistan.

In the meantime Afghan interior ministry following a statement on Sunday announced at least 33 Taliban militants were killed in Afghan police operations during the past 24 hours.

Afghan interior ministry following the statement further added Afghan police forces conducted at 11 joint military operations in coordination with the Afghan army, Afghan intelligence and coalition security forces in Kabul, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzgan, Logar, Ghazni, Paktika and Helmand provinces of Afghanistan.

Anti-government armed militant groups yet to comment regarding the reports.

Afghan uprising against Taliban expands in Ghor province

According to local authorities in western Ghor province of Afghanistan, widespread anti-Taliban campaigns by local residents have been witnessed in a number of districts in this province recently.

The officials further added, the campaigns have been launched under the leadership of former Mujahideen commanders and local residents in this province.

Former Mujahideen leaders said the campaigns have been launched in a bid to support the central government of Afghanistan and fight against the Taliban militants.

In the meantime observers and political analysts urged the Afghan government to strictly monitor the recently widespread anti-Taliban campaigns which have been witnessed across the country recently.

This comes as local residents in western Badghis province of Afghanistan announced to step up fight against the militants groups in this province.

Badghis provincial governor spokesman Sharafuddin Majidi said former Mujahideen leaders urged the government to equipment the local residents with arms in order to fight the Taliban militants.

Anti-Taliban campaigns started from eastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan after local residents in this province picked up weapons against the militants.

2 senior al-Qaida operatives arrested by Yemeni police forces

ADEN, Yemen, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Yemeni police forces arrested two senior al-Qaida operatives in the southern port city of Aden on Sunday, who sought to attack government targets in the province, the Defense Ministry said.

A special police action force and agents of the military intelligence agency raided a terrorist hideout in the Tawahi neighborhood in Aden, arresting two senior al-Qaida operatives, the country's Defense Ministry said in a brief text message obtained by Xinhua.

During the preliminary interrogation of the arrested terrorists, they revealed the location of other al-Qaida members in the same neighborhood, the statement said, adding that the arrested terrorists' IDs showed that they are not locals of Aden province; rather they came from southern neighboring province of Abyan.

A local resident told Xinhua anonymously that gunfire and hand grenade explosions could be heard following the storming campaign of the al-Qaida hideout in the Tawahi neighborhood.

Weapons confiscated from the raided house include automatic rifles, handguns, a sniper rifle and grenades, a security official said.

On Friday, a government official said that about seven suspected members of the Yemen-based al-Qaida offshoot were captured by security authorities in Aden's neighborhood of Cerator.

Yemeni authorities have stepped up security measures in the strategic port city of Aden, following intelligence reports that al-Qaida could attempt to target government compounds with armed attacks and suicide bombings.

The Yemeni branch of al-Qaida, known locally as Ansar al-Sharia (Partisans of Islamic Law), claimed responsibility for several gun raids and deadly suicide attacks that took place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

7 ANA soldiers killed in Kandahar attacks

KABUL (PAN): Seven Afghan National Army (ANA) troops were killed and as many injured in two separate roadside bombings in southern Kandahar province, officials said on Saturday.

The first blast that took place in the Panjwai district left five ANA soldiers dead and three others wounded, the 205th Atal Military Corps said in a statement.

The second roadside bomb attack happened in neighbouring Zheri district, killing two ANA service-members and injuring four others, the statement said.

Panjwai district chief Haji Fazl Mohammad confirmed the casualties suffered by the troops, who were on a patrol in the Nakhoni area when a mine tore through their vehicle at around 10pm on Friday night.

The 205th Atal Military Corps said that 10 mines were found and defused during an operation in Panjwai.

A day earlier, a roadside bomb ripped through a vehicle carrying civilians in the Spin Boldak border town, killing six people aboard.

According to police chief Gen. Abdul Raziq, the dead included two women, three children and the driver, all from the same family.

In neighbouring Helmand, armed insurgents opened fire at a passenger vehicle carrying civilians and a policeman in the Musa Qala district, an official said. The policeman travelling in the car and another person, a civilian, were killed in the attack.

A Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said two policemen were killed in the incident.

On the other hand, the Greshk district police chief said that a policeman was injured when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in the Sarband area late on Friday.

Col. Guli Khan said another police officer was injured during a clash with insurgents following the bomb blast.

He also said a child was killed and six of his family members were injured when a Taliban-fired rocket hit their house in the Haiderabad area.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital and they are said to be in a stable condition, the police chief said.

Meanwhile, the provincial intelligence department said three Taliban commanders and two Pakistani spies have been arrested from separate parts of the province.

In a statement, the National Directorate of Security office said the pair had set up a barber shop in Lashkargah and that documents recovered from them showed they spied for Pakistan.
