May 10., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 10) — A combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered more than 17 tons of explosive precursor during a patrol in Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province, yesterday.
The cache was discovered in a truck during a routine vehicle inspection. All of the explosive-making materials were confiscated and transported to a secure facility and the driver of the vehicle was taken into Afghan custody for questioning.

South

In Arghistan district, Kandahar province, an Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban facilitator during an operation today. The facilitator supplied weapons, ammunition and equipment to insurgents operating in Kandahar City and the surrounding districts. He also managed the Taliban supply routes into Kandahar province. One additional insurgent was detained as a result of this operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a search operation in Tarin Kot district, Uruzgan province, Monday. During the operation, several insurgents maneuvered into firing positions to engage the combined force. Assessing an imminent threat, the security force engaged the insurgents, killing one. The force also detained several insurgents and discovered multiple improvised explosive device components and initiators.

East

In Zurmat district, Paktiya province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a Taliban leader today. The leader coordinates and conducts roadside bombings, indirect fire attacks and other operations against Afghan and coalition security forces. He is also suspected of providing Afghan National Security Force uniforms to insurgents for infiltration-style attacks. Two suspected insurgents were detained as a result of this operation.

Finally, an Afghan and coalition security force detained an insurgent leader during an operation in Ghanzi district, Ghanzi province, Monday. The leader was responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the district. Multiple additional insurgents were detained as a result of the operation.
