Herat blast kills ISAF soldier, injures 2

HERAT (PAN): One International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldier was killed and two others injured in an explosion in the Adraskan district of western Herat province on Monday, officials said.

The blast happened at around 8 am inside a police training centre in the district, police spokesman for western zone, Col. Abdur Rauf Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said one foreign soldier was killed and two others injured, but unsure what triggered the explosion.

Acting district chief of Adraskan, Subhan Rostayee, said a trainee policeman threw a hand grenade by mistake during training that led to the casualties.

An Italian soldier was killed and two others injured in the blast and the injured were in critical condition, he added.

ISAF in a statement said they are aware of the incident at a training facility in Heart and were probing the case. ISAF also acknowledged the killing of one of their soldiers in western Afghanistan.

In the meantime Italian Defense Ministry following a statement announced, an Italian soldier has been killed and two others injured in a blast at a police training camp in the town of Adraskan in western Afghanistan.
Manuele Braj, 30, who was married with an eight-month-old baby, was killed instantly. Two other Italian soldiers were wounded to the legs but are out of danger. All three belonged to the Police Specialty Training Team (PSTT).
The explosion took place on Monday in “an observation hut near a shooting range”, killing the 30-year-old soldier, Italian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
