18 rebels killed in Paktika operations

SHARAN (PAN): Eighteen armed insurgents were killed during operations in southeastern Paktika province over the past 24 hours, an official said on Friday.

Led by Mullah Nazir, an eight-member group was attacked by helicopter-borne coalition forces after they crossed the border from Pakistan into Barmal district.

Mukhlis Afghan, the governor's spokesman, old Pajhwok Afghan News the militants planned attacks in the restive border town. At least one fighter was injured during the air raid.

Another five rebels were killed after they attacked a police patrol in the Mangarto area of Sarobi district, where two suspected Taliban were killed when the explosives they were planting went off prematurely in the Navi Qala neighbourhood.

Four more rebels were killed during an operation by police in Zherai area of Janikhel district, Afghan said, adding that police and civilians were not harmed. Some weapons and ammunition were seized by coalition forces.
