5 Afghan police, 22 militants killed in Taliban massive attack

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Five policemen and 22 militants were killed in a massive Taliban attack on checkpoints in southern province of Helmand early Sunday morning, an official said.

"An unknown number of Taliban militants launched an attack on police checkpoints in Regi area of Musa Qala district at around 3 a.m. local time Sunday and the clashes lasted for four hours, leaving five policemen and 22 militants dead," a spokesman for provincial government, Daud Ahmadi, told Xinhua.

He said several other militants fled the scene shortly after additional forces arrived in the area.

He said six policemen were also injured in the clashes in the province, branded as Taliban hotbed in southern part of the insurgency-hit country.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group launched an annual spring offensive from May 3 against Afghan and NATO-led troops stationed in the country.

The Taliban insurgents has warned the civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers regarded as the legitimate targets by militants besides warning people against supporting government and foreign troops.

Taliban has yet to make comments.
