Taliban group accidentally reveals their email list

A spokesman for the Taliban made a mistake when he accidentally sent out a press release using “CC” for all of the emails instead of

According to ABCNews, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmedi (yes, the Taliban has PR guys) emailed an ordinary press release last week, but he made a critical mistake before hitting “send.” Instead of distributing a blind carbon copy (BCC) to the email’s hundreds of recipients, which would have hidden their email addresses from one another, Ahmedi sent a carbon copy (CC), exposing all the email addresses to everyone who received the message.

About 400 names were on the mailing list, many of them journalists, but also a “provincial governor, an Afghan legislator, several academics and activists, an Afghan consultative committee, and a representative of Gulbuddein Hekmatar, an Afghan warlord.”

Thankfully for the Taliban, nothing too scandalous was revealed by the error. But at least one journalist on the list was unhappy his contact email was made visible on the Taliban list. Journalist Mustafa Kazemi, based in Afghanistan, tweeted:

“Taliban have included all 4 of my email addresses on the leaked distribution list of 500 email addresses. Quite reassuring to my safety.”

The Taliban public relations team has been busy for the last few weeks, as the summer fighting season dies down in Afghanistan.

Earlier this week, the Taliban mocked former CIA director David Petraeus for the sex scandal that cost him his job.

A spokesperson added: “From a Pashtun point of view, Petraeus should be shot by relatives from his mistress’s family. From a Shariah point of view, he should be stoned to death.”

The Taliban also expressed dismay at Obama’s re-election earlier this month.
