JALALABAD (PAN): A civilian helicopter was damaged after militants fired three rockets into Jalalabad airport in the eastern province of Nangarhar on early Saturday, an official and ISAF said.

The attack took place around 5am when three rockets landed inside the airfield that houses International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops, an Afghan guard at the facility said on condition of anonymity.

A nearby resident, Tariq, said a huge plume of smoke rose into the air for one hour in the airport after it was hit with rockets.

ISAF media office in Kabul confirmed the incident, saying an ISAF airbase had received a few rounds of unidentified indirect fire.

“According to initial reports, a civilian helicopter was damaged. No ISAF aircraft were reported damaged,” the statement added.

Airport attacked in eastern Afghanistan, helicopter damaged

According to reports, militants fired at least three missiles on Jalalabad airport in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan early Saturday morning.

All the three missiles landed inside the Jalalabad airport controlled by coalition security forces, damaging a civilian helicopter.

NATO-led coalition security forces without elaborating further confirmed the incident and said coalition security forces did not suffer any casualties following the missile attack.

No group has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

This comes as at least 8 Afghan security forces were killed in a similar attack carried out by militants in Jalalabad airport back in March.
