May 28., 2013. - ISAF Joint Command Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani leader and seven other insurgents during an operation in Gardez district, Paktiya province, today.

The leader is responsible for kidnappings against Afghan civilians. He also coordinates the movement of weapons in the local area and plans and executes attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

North

An Afghan and coalition security force killed three insurgents during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Baghlan-e Jadid district, Baghlan province, yesterday.

The senior leader facilitates improvised explosive device attacks and manages weapon distribution in Baghlan-e Jadid district. He procures weapons and ammunition and distributes them to Taliban fighters for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

South

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader and one other insurgent during an operation in Kandahar City, Kandahar province, today. The leader maintains operational control over a cell of fighters responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Panjwa’i district. He is also involved in financing insurgent operations, procuring weapons for his subordinates and conducting reconnaissance against Afghan and coalition installations.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested three insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban facilitator in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, today. The facilitator is responsible for acquiring weapons and military equipment for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also directs improvised explosive device operations in Panjwa’i district and manages a number of weapons caches. The security force also seized opium as a result of the operation.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents during an operation in search of a senior al-Qaida leader in Watahpur district, Kunar province, yesterday. The senior leader is responsible for al-Qaida operations in the Waygal and Watahpur Valley. He oversees al-Qaida training in Nuristan where he provides improvised explosive device, artillery and counter-interrogation technique training to insurgents. He also plans and conducts IED, indirect fire and direct fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
