Haqqani Network commander says Captive US soldier safe

A senior member of the Pakistan-based Haqqani Network on Saturday said, the captive US soldier held by Afghan militants will not be harmed despite the Obama administration’s decision to declare his alleged captors a terrorist group.

The Haqqani commander speaking from an undisclosed location told Associated Press on Saturday the United States and NATO can expect stepped up attacks.

He denied that the Haqqanis held the only American prisoner of war of the Afghan conflict, Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, as the U.S. believes. He did however say that Bergdahl was a captive of another branch of the Taliban, and denied earlier reports that the 26-year-old soldier from Hailey, Idaho, was in danger.

“I deny the remarks . . . that this will endanger the life of the American soldier”, the commander told Associated Press adding that, “We are not cowards and we consider it as coward to harm prisoners.”

The U.S. says that Bergdahl has been held by the Pakistan-based Haqqanis since 2009. However, the commander suggested he was with militants on the other side of the Afghan-Pakistan border.

“The American soldier is with the Emirate center (a reference to Taliban based inside Afghanistan) . . . The Americans also know it.”

He said the Taliban leadership council previously issued instructions to its commanders, including those belonging to the Haqqani network, not to harm prisoners.
From his home in Idaho, the soldier’s father Bob Bergdahl welcomed the assurances but was cautious.

FARAH, Afghanistan, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- One civilian was killed and 12 people were injured in three successive explosions in Farah city, the provincial capital of western Afghanistan's Farah province on Sunday, an official said.

"The explosive were placed in three different places near the provincial government office building and the first explosion was a motorbike blast that occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time, leaving the casualties," a provincial government spokesman Abdul Rahman Zhwandi told Xinhua.

The injured included six Afghan policemen, he said.

Police and the rescue team reached the site following the attacks were reported and all the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

No one has so far claimed credit for the attacks, though the bombings bear the hallmark of Taliban insurgent group.

In an unrelated incident, seven militants, who were placing roadside bombs or Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along a main road in Miyanshin district of southern Kandahar province, were killed in an airstrike over night, the provincial government said in a statement on Sunday.

"The militants were killed in an airstrike carried out by the NATO-led coalition forces and during a post-strike assessment operation an AK-47 and 10 IEDs were found at the scene," the statement said.

The Taliban insurgents, who have been waging more than a decade- long insurgency, launched an annual spring offensive starting from May 3 to target Afghan forces as well as U.S. and NATO troops across the country.

The insurgent group has warned the civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers regarded as the legitimate targets by militants.

Two car bombs kill 18, wound 70 in southern Iraq

Security personnel inspect the site of a bomb attack in Kirkuk, Iraq, Sept. 9, 2012. Around a dozen bombings rocked different cities across Iraq on Sunday morning, killing at least 16 people and wounding 47 more, most of whom were security members and civilians, a local police source said. (Xinhua)
BAGHDAD, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two car bombs went off coordinately in a town near the city of Amara, some 365 km south of Baghdad, on Sunday, killing 18 people and wounding some 70, a local police source told Xinhua.

The attack occurred after midday when a car bomb went off at a marketplace near the shrine of Shiite Imam Ali al-Sharqi in the town that holds the name of the Imam, the source said on condition of anonymity.

Minutes later, another car bomb was detonated when Iraqi security forces and civilians gathered at the scene of the first blast to evacuate the victims, the source said.

The two blasts killed a total of 18 people and wounded 70 others, the source added.

The explosions are seen as part of a series of bomb attacks that hit the Iraqi cities on Sunday and killed 46 people and wounded more than 177 others.

Violence in Iraq has ebbed from its climax in 2006 and 2007, when sectarian conflicts pushed the country to the brink of a civil war, but tensions and attacks remain common across the country.

Yemen army says four suspected militants have been killed

map by Evan Centanni (www.polgeonow.com)
Four suspected Islamist militants have been killed in a gunfight with Yemen’s army and allied tribal fighters in the impoverished country’s turbulent south, which has become al-Qaeda’s most formidable base, a local official said on Saturday.

Up to 50 militant fighters were battling government forces and their tribal allies near the town of Jaar, which the army recaptured in June after a 15 month occupation by Ansar al-Shariah.

The Islamist movement seized control of large swathes of southern Yemen during the turmoil caused by mass anti-government protests last year and gave shelter to al-Qaeda, flying the international militant group's flag in captured towns.

The United States has used unmanned drones to target the al-Qaeda group in Yemen, which has planned attacks on international targets including airliners and is described by Washington as the movement's most dangerous wing.

The local government official said the fighting continued late on Saturday.

On Friday, gunmen suspected of belonging to al-Qaeda had attempted to assassinate the commander of one of the tribal militias fighting alongside government forces in the south.

Tribes opposed to Ansar al-Shariah and al-Qaeda had played an important role in regaining control of Jaar and other southern towns during the summer.

Abdul Latif al-Sayed, a commander with the Popular Committees, survived the ambush on a road in Abyan Province but one of his bodyguards was killed, said another local official.

The attack was the fourth assassination attempt Sayed has survived, including a suicide bombing at a funeral last month that killed two of his brothers and 43 other people.

“The army, police and tribal fighters chased the gunmen who fled into one of the rugged valleys nearby where there were clashes between the two sides,” said the south Yemen government official, who declined to be named.

Mass anti-government protests erupted early last year, causing fighting between tribes and different factions of the army, before former President Ali Abdullah Saleh stepped down in February to allow a transition towards democracy.

Aid groups have warned of a major humanitarian crisis in the Arabian Peninsula state, where half the population lives under the poverty line.

As well as fighting the insurgency by Islamists in Abyan, the government also faces conflict with southern secessionists and with the Houthi group of Zaidi Shiite Muslims in north Yemen.

ISAF condemns Kabul suicide bombing

KABUL, Afghanistan - The International Security Assistance Force condemns today's suicide attack in Kabul, which killed several innocent Afghan civilians. According to reports from Afghan security officials, who immediately arrived on scene to secure the area, the suicide attacker today was a teenaged youth. Attacks like these exploit vulnerable individuals, coercing them into committing horrible acts. Initial casualty reports indicate only Afghan civilians suffered injuries or died from the explosion.

"If these reports are true, by taking advantage of an impressionable child to carry out this attack, the insurgents display cowardice. Forcing underage youth to do their dirty work again proves the insurgency's despicable tactics. They are completely detached from Afghan society and the interests of the Afghan people who desire peace and stability in their country," said Brig. Gen. Günter Katz, ISAF spokesman.

"I offer my condolences to the families and loved ones of any innocent civilians killed today as a result of this attack," Katz added.

Teen suicide bomber kills six near NATO HQ in Kabul

A suicide teenage suicide bomber detonated explosives near the heavily barricaded NATO headquarters in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Saturday, killing six people, including child hawkers, as Afghanistan marked a public holiday, officials said.

The bomber, who was riding an explosives-laden motorcycle, blew himself up near the entrance of Camp Eggers, a NATO spokeswoman said, referring to a sprawling base that is home to 2,500 coalition trainers.

At least four civilians were killed and two more wounded, Kabul Police Chief Ayoub Salangi told Reuters.

The attack took place as government dignitaries assembled in Kabul to commemorate 11 years since the death of Ahmad Shah Massoud, an iconic anti-Taliban commander two days before Sept. 11.

The blast reverberated through Kabul’s diplomatic quarter, which is home to many Western embassies, shortly after First Vice President Mohammad Qasim Fahim finished an address to scores of dignitaries at an event mourning Massoud.

Afghan security forces sealed off the bomb site in front of NATO headquarters and close to the Italian embassy, an AFP reporter said.

“It was a suicide attack that killed six people and wounded five others,” interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told AFP.

A senior police official speaking off the record gave the same death toll.

“It was a suicide bombing carried out by a young boy. So far there are six dead and five wounded. Most of the victims are young children who gather around ISAF to sell small items to soldiers leaving or getting into the base,” he said.

General Ayub Salangi, the Kabul police chief, confirmed four deaths.

“A 16-year-old boy on foot, blew himself up killing four and wounding two, all civilians. There are some children among the dead and wounded,” he said.

A spokesman for NATO’s U.S.-led International Security Assistance Force confirmed only a blast and said that there had been no damage to ISAF headquarters or military casualties.

“We’re aware of a blast that occurred just outside ISAF headquarters in Kabul this morning,” U.S. Army Major Adam Wojack told AFP. “There are no ISAF casualties. The ISAF compound is secure,” he said.
