June 19., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces conducted an operation to dismantle narcotics facilities in Northern Musa Qal’ah district, Helmand province, Saturday.

During the operation the security forces discovered 1,500 kilograms (3,300) pounds of opium and 2,500 kilograms (5,500 pounds) of ammonium chloride, a chemical used to refine opium into heroin. The opium, chemicals and the drug processing equipment were destroyed at the site.

Several individuals suspected of being involved in drug manufacturing were detained.

South

In Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province, an Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader today. The leader was responsible for sniper and IED attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the region. The leader provided support to insurgents in Helmand and delivered small-arms weapons and vehicles for use in attacks. The security force detained multiple suspected insurgents as a result of this operation.

An Afghan-led security force, supported by coalition troops, conducted an operation to detain a Taliban leader in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, today. The Taliban leader is responsible for directing and participating in improvised explosive device and direct fire attacks against coalition forces in Kandahar and Helmand provinces. The security force detained multiple suspected insurgents as a result of this operation.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader in Gardez district, Paktiya province, today. The leader was responsible for building and using IED’s in attacks on Afghan and coalition forces. He also coordinated the purchase and shipment of weapons and explosives for insurgents throughout the region. The security force detained one suspected insurgent and seized IED components and an AK-47 as a result of this operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a Haqqani leader in Nadir Shah Kot district, Khost province, today. The Haqqani leader operates throughout central and western Khost, conducting attacks against coalition forces and conducting illegal checkpoints. The security force detained several suspected insurgents as a result of the operation.
