June 27., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban weapons facilitator in Zharay district, Kandahar province, today.

The facilitator coordinated the transportation and storage of insurgent equipment and supplies used in attacks across the region and participated in the planning of suicide attacks.

During the operation, the security force also detained several suspected insurgents.

South

An Afghan and coalition security force apprehended an insurgent leader in Tarin Kot district, Uruzgan province, Sunday. He was responsible for planning, directing and executing attacks against Afghan National Security Force checkpoints and International Security Assistance Force patrols.

A large weapons and improvised explosive device cache was discovered in an operation conducted by a combined Afghan and coalition security force in Shahid-e Hasas district, Uruzgan province Tuesday. The cache included six rocket-propelled grenades, six IEDs, six kilograms of home-made explosive, eight AK47s, a machine gun, three grenades, and communications equipment. During the operation, insurgents attacked the security force from multiple locations. The Afghan and coalition troops returned fire and killed a number of the insurgents and detained several others.

East

In Tsamkani district, Paktiya province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in search of a Haqqani leader today. The leader is responsible for coordinating, financing and leading attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout eastern Paktiya. During the operation, the security force positively identified several groups of armed insurgents. After ensuring no civilians were in the area, the security force engaged the insurgents with a precision airstrike, killing many of them. After the strike, the security force conducted a follow-on assessment of the area and determined no civilians had been harmed and no civilian property had been damaged.

An Afghan and coalition security force detained a Haqqani leader in Sharan district, Paktika province, today. The leader was responsible for building improvised explosive devices used throughout the region. He also provided technical and tactical IED instruction to the Haqqani insurgents under his control. During the operation, the security force also detained multiple suspected insurgents.
