Insider attack leaves 5 Afghan police dead in Badghis province

An Afghan local police officer killed five of his comrades in cooperation with the Taliban militants in western Badghis province of Afghanistan.
A local security official speaking on the condition of anonymity said the incident took place on Thursday night in a security check post at Qadas district.

The official further added, local police officer recognized as Nawroz allowed Taliban militants to enter the security check post and kill five other local police officers.

This was the first insider attack on Afghan security forces during the current Afghan year.

According to the local security official, Taliban militants took all weapons and ammunition with them after killing local police officers.

Insider attacks have created major concerns for the Afghan security officials, where individuals belonging to Taliban group and other insurgents groups are infiltrating among the Afghan security forces and carry out attack on both the Afghan and foreign forces.

No group has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

Taliban attack security check post in Badghis province

According to local authorities in western Badghis province of Afghanistan at least 10 Afghan police officers were killed or injured following Taliban militants attack.

Provincial police chief Sharafuddin Sharaf confirming the report said the incident took place after a number of Taliban militants attacked a security check post in Moqor district.

Mr. Sharaf further added the clashes continued for almost two hours leaving at least four police officers dead, 2 injured and another office was disappeared.

He said a Taliban militant was also killed following the clashes.

In a separate incident Taliban militants attacked a security check post in Ab-Kamari district leaving at least 3 Afghan police officers injured.

Taliban militants group yet to comment regarding the reports.

ERAT CITY (PAN): Four Afghan National Police (ANP) members were killed and five others injured during two separate rebel attacks in northwestern Badghis province, officials said on Friday.

The insurgents attacked police checkpoints in Aab Kamari and Maqur districts late on Thursday night, the governor's spokesman, Sharafuddin Majidi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Provincial police chief, Gen. Sharafuddin Sharaf, said four policemen were killed and two others injured when the militants stormed the Miranzai check-post in Maqur district.

He added three more police were injured in a similar assault on the Chahelgazi checkpoint in Aab Kamari district. The ensuing clashes lasted two hours.

10 Afghan police join Taliban group in Badghis

According to local authorities in western Badghis province of Afghanistan, at least 10 Afghan local police officers joined the Taliban militants group.

A local security official speaking on the condition of anonymity said the local police officers also took the weapons with them.

The source further added they joined Taliban militants in Chehl-Gazi area at Abkamari district.

He did not disclose further information regarding the identities of the police officers who joined Taliban militants.

Afghan police officers have joined Taliban militants for several times however this is the first a group of 10 police officers are surrendering to Taliban militants.

Badghis is relatively a peaceful province in western Afghanistan but anti-government armed militant groups have recently increased their activities in a number of districts recently.

Local residents in Abkamari district are saying that the police officers have joined Taliban group based on a plan which was already taken by the officers.

Abkamari is among the volatile districts in western Badghis province of Afghanistan where Taliban militants are frequently carrying out insurgency activities.

Taliban militants group yet to comment regarding the report.

Bombings leave 5 Afghan soldiers dead

KABUL (PAN): Five Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed and 10 others injured during separate incidents in different parts of the country over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.

Three soldiers were killed and seven others injured during a roadside bombing in the Aab-i-Kamari district of northwestern Badghis province, a statement from the ministry said.

Another two soldiers were killed in northern Kunduz province, according to the statement, which said three soldiers were injured in southeastern Khost province. The injured were shifted to health facilities and their condition is said to be stable.

Casualties among Afghan forces are increasing as the security transition process progresses. Last week, the defence ministry announced 800 soldiers had been killed since the beginning of the Afghan calendar year.

Local authorities in western Badghis province of Afghanistan on Wednesday announced at least 7 Afghan national army soldiers were killed or injured in Moqor district.

The officials further added the incident took place after an Afghan national army vehicle struck with a roadside bomb, killing 3 Afghan army soldiers and injuring 4 others.

In the meantime another security official said the explosion took place while Afghan national army soldier were patrolling in the area.

He said the army soldiers were also ambushed by Taliban militants following the blast.

Afghan soldier attacks Spanish troops in Badghis

HERAT CITY (PAN): An Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier on Saturday fired on Spanish soldiers protecting the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in northwestern Badghis province, an official said.

The attacker and a 12-year-old boy were wounded in return fire from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops, who suffered no casualties in the latest "green-on-blue" assault.

A spokesman for the Badghis governor told Pajhwok Afghan News the insider attack took place at 10am in Maqur district, where the Spanish soldiers were inspecting reconstruction projects.

Syed Sharafuddin Majidi said the attacker, who was detained after being injured, was suffering from a mental disorder. But a security official, who did not want to be named, revealed the assailant was killed in retaliatory fire. He gave no further details about the incident.

In response to an emailed query from Pajhwok, the multinational force confirmed that two individuals wearing ANA uniforms turned their weapons against ISAF service members, wounding one.

“There were no fatalities. ISAF service members returned fire, wounding one of the shooters. Both attackers are currently in ANA custody. ISAF and Afghan officials are assessing the incident,” it added.

Since the beginning of the current year, at least 57 NATO-led troops have been killed in 37 insider attacks in different parts of the country.

Local police officers join Taliban group in Ghor province

According to local authorities in western Ghor province of Afghanistan, at least two Afghan local police forces joined the Taliban militants group in Qadis district in this province.

The officials further the two local police officers escaped from their security check post on Saturday and joined the Taliban militants.

Qadis district chief Mirza Ali Khan confirming the report said the two local police officers had connections with the Taliban militants before they escape the security check post.

Badghis province is relatively a safe province in western Afghanistan however Taliban militants have recently increased their insurgency activities in a number of its districts during the recent months.

A number of Afghan local police officers also joined the Taliban group earlier this year and Taliban group claim that more than 72 Afghan local police officers have joined their group so far which has created tensions among the Afghan security officials in thsi province.

Local security officials said this is the second time Afghan local police officers join anti-government militants during the past 2 months.

Afghan uprising against Taliban expands in Ghor province

According to local authorities in western Ghor province of Afghanistan, widespread anti-Taliban campaigns by local residents have been witnessed in a number of districts in this province recently.

The officials further added, the campaigns have been launched under the leadership of former Mujahideen commanders and local residents in this province.

Former Mujahideen leaders said the campaigns have been launched in a bid to support the central government of Afghanistan and fight against the Taliban militants.

In the meantime observers and political analysts urged the Afghan government to strictly monitor the recently widespread anti-Taliban campaigns which have been witnessed across the country recently.

This comes as local residents in western Badghis province of Afghanistan announced to step up fight against the militants groups in this province.

Badghis provincial governor spokesman Sharafuddin Majidi said former Mujahideen leaders urged the government to equipment the local residents with arms in order to fight the Taliban militants.

Anti-Taliban campaigns started from eastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan after local residents in this province picked up weapons against the militants.

100 Taliban militants give up fighting in Afghanistan

QALAI NOW, Afghanistan, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Different militants consisted of 100 Taliban fighters laid down arms and joined the government-backed peace process in Badghis province 555 km northwest of capital Kabul on Monday, spokesman for provincial administration Sharafudin Majidi said Tuesday.

"Seven groups of Taliban fighters composed of 100 people gave up fighting and joined the peace process in provincial capital Qalai Now on Monday evening," Majidi told newsmen here while welcoming the former insurgents.

He also said with joining these former militants who were active in Qadis and Muqar districts, the peace and security will be further improved in the province.

They also handed over their weapons to authorities, he further said.

Taliban militants fighting the government have yet to make comment.

More than 3,000 Taliban militants, according to officials have laid down arms and joined the government-backed peace process over the past one year.

A district police chief and five others policemen were wounded in a clash with insurgents in western Badghis province on Wednesday morning, local officials said.

The incident took place in Muqur district of Badghis when some insurgents attacked the group after the police vehicle detonated a roadside mine. The district police chief Haji Zia Khan and five other policemen were wounded, provincial spokesman Sharafudin Majidi told TOLOnews.

The insurgents escaped the area after the brief clash with the police, he said.

There were no civilians casualties during the incident, he added.

No group, including the Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the incident.

4 ANA soldiers shot dead by militants

QALA-i-NAW (PAN): Four Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed by Taliban insurgents during a poppy eradication campaign in the Moqur district of northwest Badghis province, officials said on Wednesday.

Col. Abdul Qadir, crime branch chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the soldiers from the third battalion of the 207th Zafar Military Corps were attacked by the militants while they were destroying poppies.

Four troops soldiers were killed and two others wounded, he said. Two fighters were also killed and a third injured in retaliatory fire from the troops.

A resident of Ludin area of the district, Haji Mayeen said he had heard gunshots, but had no information about casualties. About 2,400 hectares of land have been sown with poppies in Badghis this year.

Over a dozen fighters, 3 Afghan soldiers killed

HERAT CITY/ KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): More than a dozen Taliban fighters and three Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed during clashes in different parts of the country, officials said on Wednesday.

A Taliban-designated deputy governor for northwestern Badghis province, Mullah Najibullah, was among two rebels killed during a firefight with ANA soldiers in Maqur district, a military official said.

The 207th Zafar Military Corps spokesman, Col. Najibullah Najibi, said a Taliban shadow district chief for Kashk Kohna in western Herat province was killed and one of his accomplices wounded as a result of a separate operation.

Mahauddin Noori, the governor’s spokesman, confirmed the incident and said the security situation in the district would improve with the death of Mullah Abdul Khaliq, alias Tor Jan.

In another incident, two local insurgent commanders, Mullah Satar and Mullah Mohammad Ewaz, were killed along with two associates in a gunbattle with Afghan soldiers. Another six fighters were wounded in the clash that left three soldiers dead and as many wounded, according to Najibi.

Six more fighters, including a commander, were killed and two others detained in the Ghulam Ali village in Khanabad district of northern Kunduz province, the town’s administrative head said.

Sofi Habib said the eight-member group that wanted to attack the district headquarters was targeted by a NATO helicopter. The six militants killed included Mullah Habibullah, the rebel leader. The official accused the group of planting roadside bombs and killing a counterterrorism police officer four months ago.

Afghan soldiers among 10 killed in clashes

HERAT CITY (PAN): Seven Taliban fighters and three Afghan soldiers have been killed in separate incidents of violence in Herat, Badghis and Farah provinces, an official said on Tuesday.

A shadow Taliban governor for Badghis province was killed along with another fighter during an operation in the Maqur district, the 207th Zafar Military Corps spokesman, Najibullah Najibi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

One militant was killed and another wounded in a separate operation in Kushk-i-Kuhna district of Herat province, he said.

The slain insurgent was a Taliban-designated chief for the district, he said, adding the soldiers suffered no casualties in the two operations.

Four more Taliban fighters, including two commanders, were killed and six others wounded in a clash with Afghan troops on the Farah-Delaram highway in Farah province, the spokesman said.

Najibi said three Afghan soldiers were also killed and as many wounded in the clash.

Commandos battle insurgents in Badghis

BADGHIS PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan commandos from the 9th Commando Kandak, assisted by coalition special operations forces, were attacked by insurgents during a routine presence patrol near Sakharai village, Murghab district, March 6.

The commando-led force was providing security on the village outskirts when approximately two insurgents opened fire on them with a medium machine gun from a remote position in the mountains.

After positively identifying the attackers as insurgents, the commando patrol leader made the decision to respond. Coalition aircraft then engaged them with a precision-guided munition.

Shortly after, six more insurgents returned to the same position to attempt to re-engage the commando force. Coalition aircraft once again engaged with precision-guided munitions, and killed the remaining six insurgents.

The commandos, along with coalition SOF, took extreme precautions when neutralizing the attackers, ensuring that no civilians were harmed and no property damage resulted. The closest village structures were over 2,000 meters away from the insurgent fighting position.

The commando leaders met with Sakharai village leaders after the incident to inform them of the situation and discuss options for further assistance. During the shura, village elders confirmed that no villagers had been killed by coalition forces.

However, a Taliban spokesman contacted Badghis provincial governor Delbar Jan Almar shortly after the incident, claiming that three children and two women had been killed by the coalition aircraft. Murghab district governor Hashem Habibi, said that this information is verifiably false, and was designed by insurgents to discredit the positive gains of the Afghan government.

Murghab district chief of police Israil Ibrahim Khan said that insurgents are simply attempting to strike fear into the people of Murghab through rumors.

“Insurgents have demonstrated a tendency to make audacious claims of civilian casualties,” said Maj. Ryan Bolling, a spokesman for Special Operations Task Force – West. “They are resorting to increasingly desperate tactics in an attempt to win favor with a population that no longer wants to support them.”

According to a Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Afghanistan spokesman, the 9th Commando Kandak and its coalition SOF partners are resolved to protecting local communities in the Badghis province from insurgent attempts to gain ground through violence, fear and intimidation of the Afghan people.

10 militants killed and detained in Afghan police operations

Officials in the Ministry of Interior Affairs of Afghanistan on Saturday announced, at least 10 armed insurgents were killed and detained following military operations by Afghan National Police forces during the past 24 hours.

According to a press release issued by the Afghan Interior Ministry, the militants were killed and injured following military operations at Badghis and Nangarhar provinces of Afghanistan.

The source further added, at least 6 militants were killed and 4 others were detained during the operations.

Afghan Interior Ministry officials also added, at least 2 mine planters were kiled at Badpakh district in Laghman province of Afghanistan last night while they were planting an improvised explosive device.

6 Afghan police die while defusing bomb

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghanistan's Ministry of Defense says six Afghan soldiers have been killed and 16 others wounded while trying to defuse a roadside bomb.

The ministry says the soldiers died Saturday in Mukar district of Baghdis province in western Afghanistan. 

Deputy provincial governor Abdul Ghani Sabir confirming the incident said, based on the preliminary information the explosion took place as a result of an improvised explosive device which was brough inside the military base to be defused by the Afghan security forces.

Mr. Sabir further added, at least 10 people were killed and more than 15 others were injured following the incident.

Feb.03., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan (Feb. 03) — Afghan hostage rescued by combined Afghan Force

A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation freeing a kidnapped Afghan citizen in Khoghjani district, Ghazni province, Wednesday.

During the operation, the security force rescued one hostage and detained several insurgents connected with the kidnapping. The insurgents revealed that a second hostage had escaped one day prior and admitted they planned to kill the remaining hostage that day.

The security force also seized multiple small arms, ammunition and tactical vests during the operation.

The insurgents were detained by Afghan security forces for further questioning. The rescued hostage received medical attention on site and was taken to a coalition hospital for further observation.

No civilians were harmed and no shots were fired during the operation.

South
An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader during an operation in Nahr-E Saraj district, Helmand province, today. The leader was a Taliban-appointed deputy and head of the insurgent group’s military commission in Badghis province. The captured leader arranged large-scale attacks, distributed weapons and collected taxes. He represented both the Taliban and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan groups and was responsible for coordinating insurgent activities in Badghis and Faryab province. One additional suspected insurgent was detained during the operation.

East
In Bakwaw district, Farah province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered a drug and weapons cache during an operation yesterday. The cache consisted of approximately 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms) of opium, 16 improvised explosive devices, several containers of explosive-making materials, $1.5 million in Pakistan currency and a motorcycle rigged with explosives to be used as a suicide vehicle borne IED. Security forces detained three suspected insurgents and confiscated the drugs and currency. The weapons were destroyed on site without incident.

Dozens of militants join peace process in Afghanistan

According to local authorities in easern Ghazni province, at least 20 armed militants surrendered to Afghan government and joined peace process in this province.

Provincial governor Musa Akbarza said, the insurgents group under the leadership of Mullah Khadmul Furqan was plotting and carrying out insrugency activities in Dayak district of eastern Ghazni province.

In the meantime Afghan Intelligence Department, National Directorate for Security on Monday announced the reconciliation of at least 8 armed militant groups across the country.

Afghan Intelligence spokesman Lotfullah Mashal while speaking during a press conference said, around 8 armed militants groups including 93 armed militants joined the peace process.

Mr. Mashal further added, the reconciled militants were actively plotting and carrying insurgency activities in Herat, Badghis, Kandahar and Kunar provinces.

He also said, the militants that joined peace process have vowed to prevent taking part in any insurgency activities.
