ISAF forces repel failed suicide attack on FOB Finley-Shields - RC-East PAO

NANGARHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Insurgents here attacked an ISAF installation located here in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, at 1:53 p.m., April 15, allegedly killing one civilian with a vehicular-borne suicide bomb and small arms fire. Three insurgents were killed and one wounded and captured in the attack.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., a large explosion occurred outside Forward Operating Base Fenty, near the airfield located in Jalalabad. The attack caused no damage or injuries to the installation.

According to the Nangahar Governor’s Office, Afghan Security Forces responded to the scene of the explosion and captured 26 RPG rockets and two launchers, 1 PK-machine gun with 500 rounds, three AK-47 assault rifles, nine hand grenades, one pistol and several master keys. Four dead insurgents were recovered at the scene of the explosion.

The attack on Forward Operating Base Finley-Shields, which was quickly repulsed by the base defenders, sparked a fire on the base.

The incidents are currently under investigation.

Nigerian car bombs kill many in Kaduna

Two car bombs have exploded in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna, killing several people and injuring many others, officials say.

The Nigerian Red Cross said six people had died. The emergency services had earlier put the number of dead at 18.

The blasts, which caused extensive damage, happened close to restaurants, a hotel and at least one church.

The area has been the scene of a religious conflict in recent years that has claimed hundreds of lives.

There had been warnings of attacks in the region over Easter.

Many of the dead are thought to be motorcycle taxi drivers and beggars.

Witnesses say debris was thrown dozens of metres from the centre of the blast.

No one has yet admitted carrying out the bombing, but the BBC's correspondent in Nigeria, Mark Lobel, says the radical Islamist group Boko Haram recently said it would carry out attacks in the area over the Easter holiday.

Local Christian groups have speculated that the bombers were targeting a nearby church, but that heavy security meant they detonated their explosives in a nearby area instead.

Bombs kill 7, injure 70 in S. Thailand

BANGKOK, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Three bomb explosions killed seven people and wounded about 70 on Saturday in the heart of the restive southern province of Yala, the Bangkok Post online reported.

The blasts took place just minutes apart from the Ruam Mitr intersection in the main business center of Yala municipality around noon on Saturday.

Colonel Pramote Promin, a spokesman for the southern army region, told media that seven people are confirmed dead, more than 70 others were wounded, some of whom were in critical condition.

The colonel said there were three bombs that exploded. The first is a car bomb and the second and third bombs were hidden in motorcycles.

The first bomb was hidden in a motorcycle parked outside a karaoke shop. Insurgents detonated the second and third bombs, which had been hidden in cars, when the authorities rushed to check the first explosion.

Several shophouses near the blast sites were on fire and many parked cars and motorcycles were damaged by the powerful explosions.

The injured were sent to the Yala hospital.

Meanwhile, a policeman was wounded in a separate motorcycle bomb attack in Mae Lan district of neighboring Pattani province on Saturday afternoon, local media reported.

Authorities were investigating and blamed separatist militants for the attacks.

Since the resurgence of insurgency in 2004, around 11,000 violent incidents instigated by secessionists in the Muslim- dominant southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat happened, with almost 5,000 people killed and nearly 8,000 injured.

1 Policeman Killed, Others Wounded in Kandahar Car bomb

One Afghan policeman was killed and two others were wounded in a car bomb near the police headquarters in Kandahar on Monday.

Two other policemen and three civilians were wounded in the attack.

The incident took place at 10 am local time when a car bomb exploded near the fourth district police station, provincial spokesman Zalmai Ayoubi told TOLOnews.

The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital in the city, Mr Ayoubi said.

Afghan security forces have cordoned off the area and started an investigation into events, he added.

No group including the Taliban has claimed responsibly for the blast.

The attacker drove a Toyota Corolla up to the checkpoint outside of the police station in Kandahar and detonated his explosives, said the city's police chief, Abdul Raziq. 

Gunfire could be heard immediately following the blast, but Raziq said the shots came from the police.
A civilian compound nearby was also destroyed, according to a statement from the Kandahar government's media office.
