May 06., 2012. - RC-East operational update

BAGRAM, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces killed five insurgents, detained four suspects and discovered a weapons cache during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, May 6. Also, one insurgent died emplacing an improvised explosive device.

Nangarhar province
A coalition airstrike killed two insurgents firing rocket-propelled grenades at the district capital in Hesarak district.

Wardak province
A coalition airstrike killed two insurgents in Jaghatu district after Afghan Uniform Police and coalition forces were engaged with mortars and small arms fire.

Kunar province
Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces killed one insurgent in Sar Kani district in response to small arms fire.

Khowst province
One insurgent was killed when an improvised explosive device prematurely detonated. Afghan National Security and coalition forces detained four suspects who were fleeing the scene. The detainees are in custody for further questioning.

Operations in RC-East are still ongoing.

May 06., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 6) — An Afghan-led security force supported by coalition troops detained a Taliban leader during an operation in Arghistan district, Kandahar province, today.
The leader conducted roadside bombings against Afghan and coalition troops in Kandahar City and was responsible for moving explosive devices into the city from Zabul province.

The Taliban leader was also suspected of attempting to infiltrate the Afghan National Police.

The security force detained several additional insurgents and seized multiple weapons as a result of this operation.

In other ISAF news throughout Afghanistan:

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered a weapons cache during a routine patrol in Tarin Kot district, Uruzgan province, yesterday. The cache consisted of small arms ammunition, two hand grenades, one rocket-propelled grenade, five 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds, eight improvised explosive device detonators, nine anti-tank mines, and one heavy weapons mount. A small portion of the cache was confiscated for evaluation and the remainder was destroyed at the scene.

Finally, a combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a security patrol in Nahr-e Seraj district, Helmand province, Thursday. During the operation, multiple insurgents with weapons moved to fire on the combined force. Assessing an immediate threat, the force engaged the insurgents, killing several. A subsequent search of the compound found multiple improvised explosive device components, as well as 110 pounds of homemade explosives and several small arms weapons. The weapons were confiscated and the IED materials were destroyed on site.
