3 killed, 22 injured as blast hits NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, April 11 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and over 22 others injured when a bomb hit a camp of peace militiamen in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of Khyber Agency on Thursday afternoon, local media reported.
Local TV channel ARY reported that the explosion happened in the restive Tirah Valley area of Khyber Agency at about 3:30 p.m. local time, when some unknown militants targeted the camp of pro- government local people who formed a militia to fight the militants in the area.

Nature of the blast is not known yet.

The injured people were shifted to a nearby hospital where several of them were said to be critical.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

Early in the morning, one soldier and 15 militants were killed in clashes between insurgents and security forces in the same area.

Tirah valley is a strategically important area to both Pakistan army and militants, as some of the major roads from the valley lead to Afghanistan.

The fighting between militants and troops has been underway in the area since last year, however, the clashes escalated during last month when militants took hold of some of the major areas.

Local officials said that over 40,000 residents of Tirah Valley have taken refuge in the nearby areas due to the continuous clashes between different militant organizations and army over the last few months.

Pakistani Taliban overrun rival faction's headquarters, dozens killed

By
Residents pick through rubble following a military air strike against suspected militant positions in the Tirah Valley, Khyber Agency, in late December 2012. Militants associated with Ansar-ul-Islam and Tehrik-e-Taliban-e Pakistan (TTP) have been battling each other over the strategic highlands of eastern Khyber for several months. Source: Pakistan Dunya News.

Two nights ago, hundreds of Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan (Tehrik-e-Taliban-e Pakistan or TTP) militants overran the headquarters of a rival faction, Ansar-ul-Islam, deep inside the Tirah Valley, Khyber Agency, following months of fierce clashes between the two outlawed Islamist factions. Fighting between the two factions had intensified this weekend, and on Sunday, TTP fighters stormed Malikdinkhel and seized the Bagh headquarters and its surrounding bazaar, according to the News International.

Emir of Ansar-ul-Islam Maulana Qazi Mehboob-ul Haq and General Secretary of Ansar-al Islam Qari Izzatullah Ham Khial reportedly fled the Bagh area for Zakhakhel shortly before the TTP overran Bagh. However, the homes of Mehboob and Izzatullah located in Malikdinkhel have since been blown up by TTP fighters, and their headquarters in Bagh is now under TTP control. The nearby areas of Shalobar and portions of Zakhakhel have also fallen to the TTP Lashkar-e-Islam fighters, however, Ansar-ul-Islam General Secretary Qari Izzatullah Ham Khial vowed his group would defeat the rival factions from positions in Zakhakhel and Arakzai.

Shortly after the TTP takeover of Bagh on Monday, two Ansar-ul-Islam suicide bombers attacked
TTP militants as they ransacked the Ansar-ul-Islam headquarters and killed 46 militants, including an Uzbek Uzbek commander named Abu Islam, according to a regional press report.

Infighting in Khyber has forced 644 families belonging to the Qambarkhel tribe to flee for their lives this week, many of them taking up shelter in the Sanghara area of Arakzai Agency, adding to the already 24,000 displaced people fleeing the recent fighting in Khyber, according to the News International.

South Waziristan: Troops kill 12 militants in ‘sting’ operation

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Security forces claim to have killed a dozen suspected militants in a ‘sting operation’ in the volatile South Waziristan region – the former stronghold of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Hakeemullah Mehsud.

“A brief operation was conducted in the Sheen Warsak Road area, eight kilometres west of Wana, the main town in the South Waziristan Agency,” a senior security official told The Express Tribune.

“Acting on intelligence information, security forces raided a compound in the region,” he said. A firefight ensued in which 12 militants and four security personnel were killed, he added.

Local residents told The Express Tribune that the security forces had cordoned off the area early Saturday morning and blocked the Wana-Sheen Warsak Road, which leads to the Angor Adda area.

Hours later, the area resounded with intense firing, they added.

Although security forces have wrenched back control of large swathes of land in South Waziristan from Taliban militants, pockets of resistance remain in the rugged mountains of the region bordering Afghanistan and the North Waziristan Agency.

On Friday, an official of the paramilitary Frontier Corps and his son were killed when a bomb, concealed in a radio set, went off in Wana – a town where the decapitated bodies of two security officials were also found.

Orakzai operation

The situation in Orakzai tribal Agency also remains volatile.

On Saturday, three security personnel were killed and four injured in an attack by Taliban insurgents on a security check post.

“Dozens of heavily armed militants stormed Johar post in the Khadezai area of Orakazai on Friday night,” an official told The Express Tribune.

The troops manning the post put up a fight. “At least three of them were killed and five others were injured,” he said.

“The security forces also killed militants in a retaliatory action,” the official said but did not say how many.

The dead security personnel were identified as Saleem Khan, Rasheed and Amanullah. The injured were airlifted to Peshawar for treatment.

Warplanes have been sporadically targeting militant positions in upper Orakzai for over a year – and security forces claim to have killed dozens of militants in air raids and artillery fire.

However, due to its strategic location – Orakzai borders Khyber and Kurram agencies – Taliban militants continue to sneak in from the restive Khyber Agency where rival extremists group hold sway.

“It’s difficult to eliminate militancy from Orakzai unless its mountainous borders with Khyber and Kurram are plugged,” one official said.

Since Orakzai offers an important route to militants for their inter-agencies movement, insurgents have repeatedly mounted attacks on security check posts in the region.

The remote Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency remains in the control of rival extremist factions who are fighting each other for dominance. On Friday, a Taliban bomber targeted a mosque of rival Lashkar-e-Islam group, killing over a dozen worshippers.

13 militants killed in suicide attack in NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, March 23 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 militants were killed in a suicide blast carried out by a rival militant group on Friday afternoon in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of Khyber Agency bordering Afghanistan.

Local Urdu TV channels Dunya and ARY reported that 13 people were killed when a suicide bomber hit a center of Lashkar-e-Islam, a banned militant group, in Akkakhel.

Tehreek-e-Taliban (Pakistan Taliban) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

On March 2, a Pakistan Taliban suicide bomber blew himself up outside a mosque in Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency, killing 23 people and wounding over 20 others. Most of the casualties were believed to be members of Lashkar-e-Islam.

Lashkar-e-Islam, founded in 2004, has some 18,000 followers who are mainly active in Khyber Agency and is notorious for kidnapping for ransom.

Pakistani Islamist warlord Mangal Bagh rumored killed in Khyber

By

Pakistani police claimed that Mangal Bagh, the leader of a Taliban-linked terror group based in the tribal agency of Khyber, was killed during an operation there last weekend. The report is unconfirmed and a spokesman for the group denied Bagh was killed.
"The leader of the banned outfit is dead," the chief of police in Peshawar told reporters in the city today, according to Pajhwok Afghan News. The police chief did not say how he knew Bagh was killed.

Mohammad Hussain, a spokesman for the terrorist leader, denied the reports of Bagh's death, according to the news agency. Hussain said that Bagh is "alive and well," Pajhwok reported.

Pakistani security forces launched a six-day-long operation from March 12-18 in the Tirah Valley in Khyber, a known stronghold of the Lashkar-e-Islam. The military claimed that 25 Lashkar-e-Islam fighters were killed during the operation. After the operation ended, the bodies of 14 people, whose faces were burned with acid, were found in nearby Bara, Pajhwok reported. Locals accused the Pakistani military of executing those killed.

Elsewhere in Khyber, the tribal lashkar, or militia, run by the Zakhakhel executed three suspected members of the Lashkar-e-Islam, according to The News. The Zakhakhel turned against the Lashkar-e-Islam last year after the tribe accused the terror group of kidnapping and executing its tribesmen.
The Pakistani military has allied with the Zakhakhel, despite the fact that the tribe has allied with Ansar-ul-Islam, another enemy of the Lashkar-e-Islam. The Ansar-ul-Islam is another local Islamist group in Khyber that supports jihad in Afghanistan and has used suicide attacks against the Lashkar-e-Islam.

The Lashkar-e-Islam is a Taliban-linked group run by Mangal Bagh [for more information, see LWJ report, A profile of Mangal Bagh]. Based in Khyber, the Lashkar-e-Islam has established its own Taliban-like government in large areas of the tribal agency, including in Bara, Jamrud, and the Tirah Valley. The group provides recruits to battle US and Afghan forces across the border, and has attacked NATO's vital supply line which moved through Khyber before it was shut down by the Pakistani government in November 2011. The Pakistani military has targeted the Lashkar-e-Islam during five operations over the past two years, but has failed to dislodge the group from power.

The Tirah Valley is a known haven for the Taliban, the Lashkar-e-Islam, al Qaeda, and other Pakistani terror groups. These safe havens enable these terror groups to launch attacks inside Pakistan as well across the border in Nangarhar province in Afghanistan. In December 2010, the US killed Ibn Amin, a dual-hatted Taliban and al Qaeda military commander who operated in the Swat Valley, in a drone strike in the Tirah Valley. The Lashkar-e-Islam avenged his death by executing suspected four of its members who were thought to have betrayed Amin.

Mortar shelling kills 18 militants in upper Orakzai

PESHAWAR: At least 17 militants and a militant commander were killed in the upper Orakzai Agency as the security forces pounded militant hideouts with mortar shells on Wednesday in an area that has seen a lot of violence in recent times.

The officials claimed that six among the militants who died in the shelling were foreigners – two arabs and four Tajiks.

According to security officials, security forces fired mortar shells on the militant hideouts in Kago Kamar and Tajika areas of the agency that killed 17 militants.

Officials added that an important militant commander was killed in clashes with the security forces in the Ghundaki area.

The claims could not be independently verified as the area has been closed for journalists.

Upper Orakzai and particularly the areas of Mamozai bordering the Tirah valley of Khyber have been the hub of militancy and a route for intra-agency militant movement.

The security forces have managed to cut off the movement of militants between Kurram -North Waziristan and Orakzai facing casualties in the onslaught; however the situation in the area still remains turbulent.

Six militants killed in Khyber Agency, Pakistan

PESHAWAR: Six militants were killed and numerous of their hideouts were destroyed in an aerial operation in Bara subdivision of Khyber Agency on Sunday, confirmed officials.

After a week of turmoil in Khyber Agency in which three security officials were killed, three others injured and numerous clashes took place between the local peace committee and the militants, this morning gunship helicopters targeted militant hideouts in the Naray Baba area of Bara.

“At least six militants were killed and numerous of their hideouts were destroyed,” said an official from the area.

The Tirah valley of Khyber Agency is considered to be the strong hold of Lashkar-e-Islam and the security forces launched an operation against the banned organisation. The operation in the area has been continuing for almost three years now.

The officials said that the investigation into many suicide attacks and bomb blasts that have claimed innocent lives have been traced back to the tribal belt of Khyber.

On Saturday, a stray shell fired from an unknown location destroyed a house and killed three children of a single family while leaving four women injured.

Bomb kills 8 anti-Taliban tribesmen in Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan -
A local government official says a time bomb has killed eight members of an anti-Taliban militia in northwest Pakistan.

Tribal agency official Iqbal Khan says six more members of the militia were wounded in the Sunday incident in the Tirah valley of the Khyber tribal region.

He says the militia was set up to fight against a local radical group known as Lashkar-e-Islam.

Khan says explosives planted at a militia checkpoint were detonated by a timer.

He says the militia later killed two Lashkar-e-Islam members, without providing details.

Pakistan has outlawed the group, which wants enforcement of a Taliban-style version of Islamic law.

Radicals often target the militias, which they perceive as Pakistani government supporters
