In Several Joint Clearance Operations, 14 Armed Taliban Killed (May 19.2013.)

Counterterrorism:
In past 24 hours, Afghan National Police conducted several joint clearance operations with the cooperation of Afghan National Army, NDS and Coalition Forces to clean some of the areas from terrorists and enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan.
 

The operations were conducted in Nangarhar, Kunduz, Balkh, Kandahar, Zabul, Ghazni, Maidan Wardak, Paktika, Herat, Farah and Helmand provinces, as a result 14 armed Taliban were killed, four wounded and 27 other armed Taliban were arrested by Afghan National Security Forces.                                                                                   
 

Also, during these operations, Afghan National Police discovered and defused some amount of light and heavy rounds ammunition and IEDs.
 

During the same 24 hour period, Afghan National Police discovered and defused two anti-vehicle mines placed by enemies of Afghanistan for destructive activities in Parwan and Ghor provinces.

Counter Crimes:
The 101 Kabul Zone National Police detained three suspects accused of theft and drug trafficking in the 1st, 11th and 16th Districts of Kabul-City.

May 19., 2013. - ISAF Joint Command Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani leader and four other insurgents during an operation in Gardez district, Paktiya province, May 19.

The leader directs and executes attacks aimed at Afghan and coalition forces in Gardez district. He is also a known improvised explosive device expert, responsible for constructing and distributing IEDs to insurgent cells in his local area.

The security force also seized two bolt-action rifles and one AK-47 as a result of the operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested five insurgents during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, May 19. The senior leader is responsible for a wide range of insurgent activity. He oversees a group of insurgent fighters involved in ambushes, IED operations and complex attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also facilitates the movement of weapons in various districts throughout Nangarhar province and serves as an intelligence operative for senior Taliban officials.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader and one other insurgent during an operation in Pul-e ‘Alam district, Logar province, May 19. The leader maintains operational control over a group of insurgent fighters responsible for attacks on Afghan and coalition forces. He also facilitates the movement of weapons for use in insurgent activities and manages personnel decisions for the local Taliban network.

Afghan National Army Special Forces and coalition forces killed 12 insurgents while conducting a presence patrol in Qara Bagh district, Ghazni province, May 17. The joint patrol was near an ALP checkpoint in the vicinity of Qabargha village when insurgents engaged the force with small arms fire.

Afghan Local Police and Afghan Uniformed Police secured a weapons cache and coordinated for its controlled detonation in Deh Yak district, Ghazni province, May 17. Afghan Local Police, of the Laghawat checkpoint, received intelligence concerning the cache’s location and then called for an ANA Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to dispose of the cache. Fifty 107mm artillery shells and five rockets were among the items in the cache.

BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces killed two insurgents, detained one suspected insurgent and and found and safely cleared three improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, May 18.

Ghazni province

Nangarhar province
Afghan National Security Forces detained one suspected insurgent during operations in the Muhmand Dara district. The suspect was transferred to a base for questioning.

Afghan National Security Forces found and safely cleared one IED during operations in the Mayden Shahr district.

Afghan local police officers killed in Taliban attack

According to local authorities in eastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan, at least six Afghan local police officers were killed during clashes with the Taliban militants in Moqor district on Sunday.

District governor for Moqor, Sahib Khan Elham confirming the report said the incident took place around 10am local time after a number of Taliban militants attacked Afghan local police forces check points.

Mr. Elham further added at least six Afghan local police officers were killed and four others were injured during the clashes.

He said Taliban militants also suffered casualties, however, he said there are no reports regarding the exact number of Taliban militants killed or injured.

Ghazni is among the volatile provinces in eastern Afghanistan where Taliban militants are openly operating in its various districts.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the group announced its summer offensive against the Afghan and coalition security forces in the month of April.

Also on Sunday, four Afghan border police were killed when their vehicle was blown up by a roadside bomb in eastern Nangarhar province that borders neighbouring Pakistan.

“Today at around 10:00 am, a border police pickup truck hit a roadside bomb while on patrol in Mohamand Dara district of Nangarhar province,” Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, Nangarhar provincial governor spokesman told AFP.

“As a result of the blast, four border police were killed.” he said.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for both attacks saying at least two local officers were among the dead in Ghazni.

5 al-Qaida members killed in U.S. drone strike in Yemen's south

ADEN, Yemen, May 18 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. drone strike killed at least five members of the Yemen-based al-Qaida offshoot in the southern province of Abyan on Saturday, a government official told Xinhua.

"About five terrorists were killed when a drone strike targeted an al-Qaida convoy that was passing through a desert road in the town of Jaar in Abyan province," the government source said on condition of anonymity.

Local residents near the scene confirmed to Xinhua, saying that "vehicles of the al-Qaida terrorist group were struck by three rockets. Several people were either killed or injured in the bombing."

Dozens of al-Qaida members have been killed in such airstrikes since Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi took office in February 2012, after a year-long unrest weakened the control of the central government and allowed the militants to take over swaths of territory in the south.

The Yemeni government managed to recapture several of southern cities in May 2012.

But on Jan. 23, a U.S. drone strike targeting armed militants mistakenly hit a house of civilians in Yemen's southeastern province of al-Bayda, killing two children, according to Yemeni officials.
