3 people killed in car bombing in eastern Iraq

BAQUBA, Iraq, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed and 18 wounded in a car bomb explosion near a marketplace in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala on Sunday, a provincial police source said.

A booby-trapped car went off at a parking lot of a popular marketplace, which was close to an Iraqi army checkpoint in Khalis, just north of the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of the capital Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Four soldiers were among the 18 wounded people. The powerful blast caused three people dead and severe damage of seven shops as well as several civilian vehicles, the source said.

Diyala province, which stretches from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border east of the country, has long been a stronghold for al-Qaida militants and other insurgent groups since the U.S. led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Violence in Iraq has decreased from its climax in 2006 and 2007, when sectarian conflicts pushed the country to the brink of a civil war, but tensions and sporadic shootings and bombings are still common across the country.

Six people killed in Iraq's violence

BAGHDAD, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of six people were killed and eight others wounded in separate bomb and gunfire attacks in central and northern Iraq on Thursday, the police said.

One of the attacks occurred in the morning when a roadside bomb ripped through Mahmoudiyah town which are predominant Shiites, some 30 km south of Baghdad, without causing human casualty, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Another car bomb followed and detonated among Iraqi security forces and civilians who gathered at the site of the first blast, killing two people and wounding five others, the source said.

Insurgents frequently used a tactic of creating an initial explosion to attract security forces and people and then setting off another to get heavier casualties, he said.

In Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, a policeman was killed and his brother wounded when a sticky bomb attached to their car detonated in the town of Bani Saad, southwest of the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, a provincial police source anonymously told Xinhua.

In a separate incident, a civilian was killed and his son wounded when gunmen opened fire on them in the town of al-Hadeed, some 10 km west of Baquba, the source said.

In northern Iraq, a policeman was killed and a civilian wounded when a sticky bomb attached to their car went off in the city of al-Shirqat, some 290 km north of Baghdad, a local police source said.

Also in the north, gunmen shot dead a lawyer in front of his house in al-Sukker neighborhood in northern the city of Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, a local police source told Xinhua.

Violence in Iraq has decreased from its climax in 2006 and 2007, when sectarian conflicts pushed the country to the brink of a civil war, but tensions and sporadic shootings and bombings still common across the country.

Three policemen killed in gunmen attacks in Iraq

BAQUBA, Iraq, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Three policemen were killed and five people wounded in two attacks by insurgents against Iraqi security forces in the eastern province of Diyala on Sunday, a provincial police source told Xinhua.

On early Sunday, gunmen attacked a police checkpoint on Imam Wais area, 115 km northeast of Baghdad, killing three policemen and wounding three others, the source said on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, two civilians were injured when two mortar rounds landed outside an Iraqi army checkpoint at a village located north of the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, the source said.

Sunday's attacks came a day after a series of attacks that killed a total of 23 Iraqis and wounded over 70 others.

Such attacks cast a pall over the major Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha festival. The four-day festival is also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice, which marks the end of the spiritual peak of the annual pilgrimage or Hajj in Arabic, when pilgrims descend from the hill of Arafat to the nearby holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

9 killed, 10 injured by attacks in east Iraq

BAQUBA, Iraq, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and 10 others injured Thursday in separate bomb and gunfire attacks in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, a provincial police source said.

A roadside bomb detonated near an army patrol in Hemreen area, some 110 km northeast of Baghdad, killing four soldiers and wounding two others, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, two policemen were killed and three others injured when gunmen attacked their checkpoint in Dhouib area, some 15 km south of the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, the source said.

In addition, gunmen with assault rifles attacked a police checkpoint at an intersection just west of Baquba, killing one policeman and wounding another, the source added.

Meanwhile, a member of the government-backed Awakening Council group was gunned down by gunmen near his house in Aswad village, some 9 km north of Baquba, he said.

The Awakening Council group, also known as Sons of Iraq movement or Sahwa, consists of mostly anti-U.S. Sunni insurgent militant groups, who turned their rifles to fight al-Qaida network after Sahwa's leaders became dismayed by al-Qaida's brutality and religious zealotry in the country.

Separately, unidentified militants attacked a police checkpoint in al-Rasul village, some 17 km southwest of Baquba. The 15-minute clash resulted in the killing of one of the attackers, he added.

Also in Diyala, a booby-trapped car detonated at the entrance of al-Wajihiyah town, 20 km northeast of Baquba, injuring four civilians, he said.

12 killed in clashes between security forces, al-Qaida militants in Iraq's Diyala

BAQUBA, Iraq, July 26 (Xinhua) -- As many as seven al-Qaida fighters and five security members were killed in clashes at a former al-Qaida stronghold in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, a provincial police told Xinhua on Thursday.

The incident took place late on Wednesday when a group of suspected al-Qaida militants attacked a police patrol in al-Hadid area in northwest of the provincial capital city of Baquba, which located some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The attack sparked a fierce clash with the militants, prompting an Iraqi army force backed by helicopters to intervene, the source said.

The clashes resulted in the killing of seven militants and the capture of eight others, while two policemen and three soldiers were killed by the clashes, he said.

An Iraqi army helicopter was hit by a militant's machinegun, but managed to land safely, the source added.

Al-Hadid is a rural area locates some 10 km northwest of Baquba. The palm grove area had been one of main strongholds for al-Qaida militants during the years after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

On Sunday, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the top leader of "the self- styled Islamic State of Iraq", al-Qaida front in the country announced a plan named "Breaking the walls" aimed at releasing Qaida prisoners and to target the country's judges and investigators, as well as to return to the previous al-Qaida strongholds that had evacuated.

Diyala province, which stretches from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border east of the country, has long been a stronghold for al-Qaida militants and other insurgent groups since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 despite repeated U.S. and Iraqi military operations against them.

Five family members killed and four more wounded in two Baquba blasts

ERBIL, May 22 (AKnews) - Five family members were killed and four others were injured when two al-Sahua houses blew up in Baquba today.

Head of the security committee in Baquba Council Qahtan Jasim said unknown armed men detonated one bomb each in front of two houses of al-Sahua members in al-Katun neighborhood.

Jasim said three family members were killed and two more were injured in the first house.

Two family members were killed and two more were wounded in the second house.

Al-Katun district witnessed four bomb blasts early this morning, but no casualties were reported.

Also in the province, gunmen shot dead a policeman in the al- Hadid area, some 10 km northwest of Baquba, the source added.

In addition, a sticky bomb attached to a minibus carrying passengers went off in eastern Baquba, wounding two people aboard, he said.

On Thursday, Diyala province was the scene of a deadly attack, when a car bomb went off near a village market some 30 km off Baquba, killing seven people and wounding 19 others.

Diyala, which stretches from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the country's eastern border with Iran, has long been a stronghold for al-Qaida militants and other insurgent groups since 2003.

In Salahudin province, gunmen opened fire Saturday morning on a car carrying two off-duty policemen and a civilian in a village near the city of Sherqat, some 280 km north of Baghdad, killing the civilian and one of the policemen and wounding the other, a local police source anonymously told Xinhua.

Salahudin province, located in northern-central Iraq, is a Sunni-dominated province. Its capital city of Tikrit, some 170 km north of Baghdad, is the hometown of Iraq's former president Saddam Hussein.
