Two NATO soldiers killed in Eastern Afghanistan: ISAF (06.01.)

At least two NATO service members and one ISAF civilian were killed following militants attack and roadside bomb blast in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday.
NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) following a statement said, “One International Security Assistance Force service member and one ISAF civilian were killed during a direct fire attack in eastern Afghanistan today.”

In a separate statement ISAF announced, “An International Security Assistance Force service member was killed during an improvised explosive device attack in eastern Afghanistan today.”

The statements did not disclose further information regarding the exact locations of the incidents and nationalities of the deceased soldiers and the ISAF civilian.

At least 68 NATO service members including 55 US troops, 6 British troops and 7 soldiers from the other NATO member countries have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2012.

Afghan soldier kills 2 ISAF troops in latest green-on-blue attack

An Afghan soldier killed two NATO troops in an attack in western Afghanistan today. The attack is the sixth green-on-blue, or insider attack, in which Afghan security personnel open fire on Western forces, so far this year.
The International Security Assistance Force announced that two "service members were killed when an Afghan National Army soldier turned his weapon against ISAF service members in western Afghanistan today."
ISAF did not disclose the identities or nationalities of the soldiers who were killed in the attack. US, Spanish, and Italian soldiers make up the bulk of the forces operating in western Afghanistan.
It is also unclear if the Afghan soldier was killed or captured after killing the Afghan soldiers, or if he escaped.
So far this year, there have been six green-on-blue attacks in Afghanistan. Five ISAF soldiers and one civilian adviser have been killed in the six attacks since Jan. 1. The first attack took place on Jan. 6 in Helmand province. The last such attack took place on April 7, when two Lithuanian soldiers were wounded after an Afghan soldier opened fire on their vehicle with an RPG.
So far this year, nearly 13 percent of ISAF's deaths have been the result of green-on-blue attacks. Last year, green-on-blue attacks accounted for 15% of Coalition deaths. The attacks have tapered off in recent months as partnering of Afghan and Coalition troops has been reduced.
Since Jan. 1, 2008, a total of 78 insider or "green-on-blue" attacks have been reported against International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) personnel in Afghanistan, killing 132 personnel and wounding 148 more. [See LWJ special report, Green-on-blue attacks in Afghanistan: the data.]

ISAF cargo plane crashes in Bagram

CHARIKAR (PAN): An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) cargo plane crashed in central Parwan province on Monday afternoon, officials said.
The aircraft went soon after takeoff from the US main military base in Bagram at about 4pm, the district police chief, Col Zmarai Nasiri, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He linked the incident to a technical fault, saying further details were awaited.

In response to an emailed query from Pajhwok, the ISAF media office confirmed the crash. “At 15:30 hours, a civilian cargo aircraft crashed on Bagram Airfield immediately after takeoff.”

Emergency responders were currently on the scene, it said, adding there was no sign of any insurgent activity in the area.

Meanwhile, the Taliban claimed shooting down the plane. The group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said all those on board the plane were killed.

QALAT (PAN): Four International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) personnel were killed in a plane crash in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, officials said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, the NATO-led force said, adding initial reporting indicated there was no enemy activity in the area at the time of the incident.

In line with policy, ISAF neither revealed the victims’ nationalities nor the exact location but Afghan officials said the crash occurred in the Shahjoi district of Zabul province.

The chopper went down in Baghgi area in the afternoon due to some technical fault, the district’s administrative head, Mohammad Siddique, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Brig. Gen. Rogh Lewanay, the provincial police chief, verified the crash. However, he had no information about casualties.

Last week, a fierce hailstorm damaged dozens of US military helicopters in southern Afghanistan. "A storm moved through southern Afghanistan April 23, causing damage to a number of coalition aircraft at Kandahar Airfield,” ISAF said.

The multinational force said: “ISAF had already implemented actions to mitigate the effects of the storm and our forces continue to receive all necessary support."

Although ISAF did not give a specific number, a US news channel reported 50 helicopters had been harmed by the storm. “The damage was severe enough that the helicopters are grounded until they can be repaired,” Fox News said.

Pilot killed in US F-16 crash

KABUL (PAN): A coalition pilot died after his plane crashed in eastern Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said on Thursday.
The site had been located and the pilot’s body recovered, the alliance said, adding the cause of the crash was under investigation

Initial reporting indicated there was no insurgent activity in the area at the time of the crash, a statement from the multinational force said.

Although ISAF did not reveal the pilot’s nationality, a media report said a US fighter pilot was killed when his F-16 jet crashed late on Wednesday near Bagram Air Base.

Air Force Central Command spokesperson Capt. Natassia Cherne said the plane crashed 10 miles south of the runway. "Obviously, the worst part of the situation is that we lost an airman."

Earlier today, uniformed Afghan security forces attacked a US military base in eastern Kapisa province, killing a civilian contractor. Three Afghan troops are also said to have been killed in the incident.
A statement issued by ISAF today said: "Individuals wearing Afghan National Army uniforms turned their weapons against International Security Assistance Force members in eastern Afghanistan today, killing one ISAF-contracted civilian."
According to Khaama Press, "several" armed men, said to be Afghan National Army soldiers and Afghan police officers, attacked the base in Kapisa City "while Afghan soldiers were leaving the military base and a verbal conflict started between US and Afghan soldiers."
The attackers were equipped with "equipped with Humvee armoured vehicles and modern military equipment," Khaama Press reported.
The Khaama report stated that one US soldier and one Afghan soldier were killed in the attack, and that no one was injured. According to ISAF, however, it was a civilian US employee, not a US soldier, who died in the incident.
In response to an inquiry by The Long War Journal as to details of the attack, ISAF stated:

We can confirm that one ISAF-contracted civilian died when three individuals wearing Afghan National Security Forces uniforms and driving an ANSF vehicle forced their way on base and turned their weapons against International Security Assistance Force service members and civilians today in eastern Afghanistan. All three individuals were killed during the engagement and the area has been secured by ISAF and ANSF. Afghan and coalition officials are looking into the circumstances of this incident.

Today's attack is the second green-on-blue, or insider, attack on Coalition forces in Afghanistan this year. The previous attack took place on Jan. 6 in Wardak province. Last year, green-on-blue attacks accounted for 15% of Coalition deaths. The attacks have tapered off in recent months as partnering of Afghan and Coalition troops has been reduced. Update: The Associated Press reports that the attack took place in the Tagab district of Kapisa province, and that three US soldiers were also wounded in the attack. According to AP, the Taliban claimed in a statement that the attackers were from the Afghan army.

KABUL (PAN): Three individuals dressed as Afghan security men killed a NATO contractor in eastern Afghanistan on Friday, the coalition's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.

ISAF said in a statement that one "ISAF-contracted civilian" was killed, the second "insider" attack this year.

The attackers, who drove an Afghan security vehicle, were killed during the engagement. The assailants forced their way to the base in eastern Afghanistan, the statement said, but declined to give the nationality.

"We can confirm that one ISAF-contracted civilian died when three individuals wearing Afghan National Security Forces uniforms and driving an ANSF vehicle forced their way on the base and turned their weapons against ISAF service members and civilians ."

According to reports several armed militants attacked a US military base in eastern Kapisa province of Afghanistan on Friday.

The incident took place in Kapisa city and unconfirmed reports suggest that the armed men are Afghan national army and police officers.

The assailant armed men are also equipped with Humvee armoured vehicles and modern military equipment and at least one US soldier has reportedly been killed following the clashes.

In the meantime a local government official speaking on the condition of anonymity said the incident took place while Afghan soldiers were leaving the military base and a verbal conflict started between US and Afghan soldiers.

The source further added at least one US soldier and one Afghan soldier were killed during the clashes and no one else was injured.

NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) following a statement also confirmed the report and said, “Individuals wearing Afghan National Army uniforms turned their weapons against International Security Assistance Force members in eastern Afghanistan today, killing one ISAF-contracted civilian.”

ISAF's drone crashes in Paktika

KABUL (PAN): A pilotless aircraft of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) has crashed in southeastern Paktika province near the Pakistan border, the alliance said on Wednesday.
In response to an email from Pajhwok Afghan News, the NATO-led force confirmed Tuesday’s incident in the Janikhel district of the restive province.

“A small un-manned aircraft crashed and was recovered by ISAF forces in Janikhel district. The cause of the crash is not yet known,” the media office of the multinational force added.

On the other hand, the Taliban claimed shooting down the aircraft. The group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said the plane caught fire after being hit in Soorkai Ghar area.

Two Afghan soldiers opened fire on Spanish and Afghan troops patrolling in the western Afghan province of Herat last night. The insider (or 'green-on-blue') attack, in which Afghan security forces strike at Coalition allies, is the last such incident recorded in 2012.
The two Afghan soldiers attacked the Spanish troops last night as they patrolled in the Karkh district in Herat, according to Khaama Press. No Spanish or Afghan soldiers were hurt.
The International Security Assistance Force confirmed that the attack took place, and said an investigation had been launched to determine whether the attack was carried out by Afghan troops. An Afghan security official told Khaama Press that the two soldiers were members of the Afghan National Army.
A top Taliban spokesman claimed that the Afghan soldiers, who were from Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, were operating under Taliban orders, the Afghanistan Times reported. The two Afghan soldiers escaped to the Taliban after the attack. The Taliban, who routinely exaggerate casualties caused by their operations, also claimed that four Spanish soldiers were killed in the attack.
Yesterday's attack is the second recorded in Herat province in 2012. On July 22, 2012, a member of the Afghan National Police killed three civilian trainers who worked for ISAF. The attacker was killed.
In 2012, a total of 44 green-on-blue attacks reportedly took place, resulting in the deaths of 61 ISAF military and civilian personnel. (Note: ISAF does not disclose data on all such attacks; ISAF has told The Long War Journal that the overall number of attacks is "classified".) In 2011, there were 15 such attacks reported, and in 2010 there were 5.
In 2012, the green-on-blue attacks accounted for more than 16 percent of ISAF's casualties. In 2011, such attacks accounted for 6 percent of ISAF's casualties. ISAF drone crashes in Paktika

KABUL (PAN): An unmanned aircraft belonging to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) crashed in the southeastern province of Paktika, the multinational troops said on Saturday.

The aircraft crashed on Friday in a remote part of Zarghun Shahar district of the province due to a mechanical failure and was later intentionally destroyed by the coalition troops, said an ISAF statement.

“There were no successful insurgent attacks directed at ISAF aircraft yesterday,” added the statement.

However, a Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for shooting down the aircraft, killing all people on board.

ISAF drone attack kills 3 boys in Logar

PUL-I-ALAM (PAN): Three civilians were killed during an ISAF drone strike in the Baraki Barak district of central Logar province on Monday, residents and the provincial council head said.

The airstrike was conducted at around 1.00pm in the Shati Qala area of the district, killing three boys, provincial council chief, Ghulam Yahiya Ahmadzai, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the boys, all aged below 16 years, were working on their farm, and village elders later took their bodies to the governor’s office as a mark of protest.

Resident Haji Habibur Rahman said the boys, working on their carrot farm, had no links to the insurgents.

Baraki Barak district chief, Mohammad Rahim Amin, said the base of American troops came under rocket attack from the area where the airstrike was conducted. He said an investigation was underway to determine whether or not the youngsters had a role in the attack.

Meanwhile, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) media office in Kabul said it was unaware of the incident. It would look into the issue, a brief statement from the NATO-led said.

LASHKARGAH (PAN): A man wearing an Afghan National Army (ANA) uniform opened fire on British troops in southern Helmand province on Sunday, officials said.

The latest green-on-blue attack took place in Nad Ali district in the evening, a senior police official, Col. Mohammad Ismail Hotak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said ANA and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldiers exchanged gunfire, but he had no information about casualties.

But Brig. Gen. Syed Malook Safi, 215th Maiwand Military Corps commander, confirmed one ISAF service member was killed and an ANA soldier injured. He said an investigation was underway.

Meanwhile, ISAF confirmed the shooting, saying that an individual in an ANA uniform turned his weapon against foreign soldiers, killing one.

However, the NATO-led force did not give the victim’s nationality. “ISAF and Afghan officials are investigating the incident,” it added.

At least 378 NATO troops including 287 US troops, 44 British troops and 47 soldiers from the other NATO member countries have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2012.

KABUL, Afghanistan – Yesterday, one International Security Assistance Force service member and one ISAF-contracted civilian employee were killed in an exchange of fire in Wardak province. Three Afghan National Army soldiers are also reported to have died.

What was initially reported to have been a suspected Insider Attack is now understood to possibly have involved insurgent fire. The incident occurred while an ISAF unit was manning a temporary check point in an area near an Afghan National Army unit. According to ISAF and ANA reporting, after a short conversation took place between ANA and ISAF personnel firing occurred which resulted in the fatal wounding of an ISAF soldier and the death of his civilian colleague. In an ensuing exchange of fire three ANA personnel are reported to have died.

We deeply regret the loss of life in this tragic incident. Our deepest sympathies are with the families of our personnel who were killed.

The incident is now being jointly investigated by ANA and ISAF personnel.

3 ISAF soldiers injured in Kunar suicide bombing

ASADABAD (PAN): An Afghan civilian was killed and three foreign troops were wounded as a result of a suicide bombing in eastern Kunar province on Tuesday afternoon, a senior official said.

Governor Syed Fazlullah Wahidi told Pajhwok Afghan News the bombing took place near the Watapur district centre, where NATO-led soldiers were busy overseeing the construction of a bridge. 

Sultan Mohammad, a shopkeeper in the area, was killed and his son injured along with three International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops in the explosion, the governor said.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said nearly a dozen foreign soldiers were killed and eight others injured in the attack, which was carried out by an elderly man.

The ISAF media office in the eastern zone confirmed the assault and injuries to three of its soldiers.

ISAF clarifies information on partnering with ANSF

KABUL, Afghanistan (Sept. 18, 2012) — Recent media coverage regarding a change in ISAF's model of Security Force Assistance (SFA) to the Afghan National Security Forces is not accurate. ISAF remains absolutely committed to partnering with, training, advising and assisting our ANSF counterparts. The ISAF SFA model is focused at the battalion level and above, with exceptions approved by senior commanders. Partnering occurs at all levels, from Platoon to Corps. This has not changed.

In response to elevated threat levels resulting from the "Innocence of Muslims" video, ISAF has taken some prudent, but temporary, measures to reduce our profile and vulnerability to civil disturbances or insider attacks. This means that in some local instances, operational tempo has been reduced, or force protection has been increased. These actions balance the tension of the recent video with force protection, while maintaining the momentum of the campaign.

We've done this before in other high tension periods, and it has worked well. Under this guidance, and as conditions change, we will continue to adapt the force posture and force protection. The SFA model is integral to the success of the ANSF, and ISAF will return to normal operations as soon as conditions warrant.

A NATO helicopter crashed killing two troops in Eastern Afghanistan, the third time in 10 days that a coalition helicopter has come down.

NATO-led International Security Assistance Force following a statement on Wednesday announced, “Two International Security Assistance Force service members died following a helicopter crash in eastern Afghanistan today.”

The statement did not disclose further information regarding the exact location of the incident and nationalities of the deceased soldiers saying, “It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.”

In the meantime reports suggest the incident happened in Logar province in Eastern Afghanistan, an area patrolled mostly by U.S. forces.

The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility, saying one of their fighters shot the aircraft down. Afghan sources in Logar say a heavy firefight broke out after the helicopter crashed.

Less than a week ago, a NATO helicopter crashed near Kandahar, killing two Australian troops. On August 26, another NATO helicopter crashed, described by ISAF as a “hard landing.” According to ISAF, no one on board was killed. The Taliban claimed responsibility for both incidents, saying their fighters shot the aircraft down.

2 NATO troops shot dead by Afghan army soldier on Monday

At least two NATO soldiers were killed following an attack by Afghan national army in eastern Afghanistan on Monday.

NATO-led International Security Assistance Force following a statement announced, “Two International Security Assistance Force service members died when a member of the Afghan National Army turned his weapon against ISAF service members in eastern Afghanistan today.”

The source further added, “ISAF troops returned fire, killing the ANA soldier who committed the attack. “

Afghan and ISAF officials are investigating the incident, ISAF said following the statement.

The source did not disclose further information regarding the exact location of the incident and nationalities of the deceased soldiers.

International Security Assistance Force generally do not disclosse identities of the NATO soldiers killed in Afghanistan saying, “It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.”

So far this year, 32 “green-on-blue” attacks (the phrase comes from the colors that the U.S. military assigns in exercises to “host nation” and “friendly” forces) have killed 40 members of coalition forces and wounded 69, versus 16 attacks that resulted in 28 dead and 43 wounded during the same period in 2011.

Another ISAF soldier killed in green-on-blue attack in Afghanistan

A member of the International Security Assistance Force was shot and killed in southern Afghanistan today when a man in an Afghan police uniform turned his weapon on a group of ISAF soldiers, ISAF stated in a press release. The release did not identify the nationality of the dead ISAF soldier, and did not specify whether other troops were injured in the attack.

There has been an extraordinary spike in green-on-blue attacks recently; they now account for over 13% of ISAF casualties this year. Today's attack is the eighth such attack on ISAF personnel in the past two weeks; 11 soldiers have been killed in the eight attacks.

The US is becoming increasingly concerned about the rise in attacks by Afghan forces against their Coalition colleagues, and is pressing the Afghan government to adopt more stringent vetting measures for recruits to Afghan forces, according to Reuters. The US military also issued a directive this week to all Coalition troops instructing them to carry a loaded weapon at all times.

As the attacks have increased, the Taliban have seized on them in their propaganda. On Aug. 7, the Taliban released a video of two Afghan soldiers who attacked ISAF soldiers in Kunar and Uruzgan [see Threat Matrix report, Observations on Taliban video 'welcoming' rogue ANA soldiers].

In a statement released on jihadist forums this week, Mullah Omar, the leader of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, or the Taliban, addressed the issue of green-on-blue attacks. Omar claimed that the Taliban have "cleverly infiltrated in the ranks of the enemy according to the plan given to them last year." He urged government officials and security personnel to defect and join the Taliban as a matter of religious duty. He also noted that the Taliban have created the "Call and Guidance, Luring and Integration" department, "with branches ... now operational all over the country," to encourage defections. NATO drone strike kills up to 50 militants in eastern Afghanistan

ASADABAD, Afghanistan, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- About 50 militants were killed on Saturday afternoon when a NATO pilotless plane carried out an attack in Afghanistan's eastern province of Kunar, the police said.

"The drone targeted four suspected vehicles in Shinallai area of Chapa Dara district at around 1 p.m. local time Saturday, killing 50 militants, including 13 insurgent's local commanders," police chief of the district, Najibullah Khan, told Xinhua.

Khan said a Taliban shadowy police chief for the district named Hattiqullah and another Taliban leader named Turabi were among the killed.

The Taliban insurgent group, which launched in May this year's spring offensive against Afghan and NATO forces, has yet to make comments.

The Kunar province bordering Pakistan, has seen increasing militancy despite continued military operations there.

Separately, a soldier with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) lost his life in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan on Friday, the ISAF confirmed Saturday.

Currently over 130,000 NATO-led ISAF troops have been serving in Afghanistan since the Taliban regime was toppled in late 2001.

In another development, militants killed the head of a district prison in the country's southern province of Helmand Saturday afternoon.

"Head of Gereshk district's prison, Ismail Khan, was killed when a sticky bomb attached to his vehicle went off near the prison compound at around 1 p.m. local time shortly after he get in his car," police chief of the district, Guli Khan, told Xinhua.

Earlier, Saturday a bomb explosion hit the vehicle of a local elder named Mohammad Ali, killing his driver and injuring four anthers including Ali in Nahrin district of northern Baghlan province.

ISAF Commander’s Eid ul-Fitr Message

KABUL, Afghanistan - The following is a statement from Gen. John Allen, commander of ISAF:

“On the eve of the most blessed celebration of Eid ul-Fitr, when the pious people of Afghanistan celebrate their faith and the Holy words of the Koran, once again Mullah Omar has issued an unmistakable message of death, hate and hopelessness for the Afghan people.

For normal members of the faithful, this should be a message of congratulations on the occasion of the ending of the holy period of Ramazan, but instead this message speaks to insurgent operations, revenge, death, lies and false unity among the killers.

Repeating the same insane language of previous years, Omar once again writes that his thugs should “pay close attention to the protection of life, property and honor…employ tactics that do not cause harm to life and property of the common countrymen.” Yet, as we saw in Nimroz and Kunduz Provinces just days ago, Omar sent his assassins to slaughter dozens of innocent Afghan men, women and children. In 2012 alone, hundreds of innocent Afghans have been killed by bombs built and detonated by Omar’s people. Either Omar is lying, or his henchmen are not listening to him, but it is clear that innocent Afghan civilians are paying the price for his corrupt leadership.

While Omar rests comfortably from afar, he continues to send young brain-washed men to carry out attacks in a fruitless cause. He professes love for his fighters, yet he sends them to their deaths by the hundreds. Where is the vision that Omar speaks of? Where is the love he professes for the Afghan people? Are these not the acts of a deranged man who puts his own goals of personal domination ahead of the future of the Afghan people?

This latter point is most apparent when Omar speaks about education in this year’s Eid message. He insults the Afghan people when he says his movement “…considers education as a main factor for advancement of its beloved people in this world and a cause for their prosperity in the world to come.” Not true. Omar’s people have burned numerous schools, built by the Government of Afghanistan and the Coalition, as examples of his true belief in education for the Afghan children.

Omar also says his thugs have infiltrated the ranks of Afghanistan’s legitimate armed forces. The pride of the Afghan people has been smeared by killers who pose as Soldiers and police, yet they represent the worst of humanity. Today, the Afghan Army and National Police are trying to build a better future for the Afghan people, yet Omar wants to stop these efforts. Coalition forces are here to help the people; we have no other reason for being here other than to make Afghanistan a stable country, founded on educated and healthy citizens.

If Omar’s Eid message were true to his written word, he would stop slaughtering innocent Afghans. He would recognize that his movement does not have the will or capability to make Afghanistan a prosperous state, at peace with its neighbors, and a viable member of the international community.”
