16 armed insurgents killed and 16 others arrested by Afghan National Police

Counterterrorism:
During the past 24 hours, Afghan National Police, Afghan National Army, NDS and Coalition Forces launched five joint clearance operations in Kabul, Kunar, Kunduz, Kandahar and Helmand provinces.

As a result of these operations, 16 armed insurgents were killed and 16 others were arrested by Afghan National Police.

Also, during these operations, Afghan National Police discovered and confiscated 1438 kilograms of opium, two AK-47 assault rifles with 13 magazines, one rocket launcher, two PKM machine guns, six different types of mines, and 83 kilograms of explosive materials.

During the same 24 hour period, Afghan National Police discovered and defused 18 kg of explosive materials and one anti-vehicle mine as a result of security operations in Ghazni and Kapisa provinces.
Counternarcotics:
Afghan National Police arrested two smugglers with 15kg of opium and 2kg of hashish in the 5th and 8th Districts of Kabul-City.

In the meantime, Afghan National Border Police arrested a smuggler with 45 kilograms of heroin in the Spin Boldak District of southern Kandahar province, yesterday.

Crimes:
The 101 Kabul Zone National Police detained a man accused of murder in the 17th Districts of Kabul-City.

5 Afghan police, 22 militants killed in Taliban massive attack

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Five policemen and 22 militants were killed in a massive Taliban attack on checkpoints in southern province of Helmand early Sunday morning, an official said.

"An unknown number of Taliban militants launched an attack on police checkpoints in Regi area of Musa Qala district at around 3 a.m. local time Sunday and the clashes lasted for four hours, leaving five policemen and 22 militants dead," a spokesman for provincial government, Daud Ahmadi, told Xinhua.

He said several other militants fled the scene shortly after additional forces arrived in the area.

He said six policemen were also injured in the clashes in the province, branded as Taliban hotbed in southern part of the insurgency-hit country.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group launched an annual spring offensive from May 3 against Afghan and NATO-led troops stationed in the country.

The Taliban insurgents has warned the civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers regarded as the legitimate targets by militants besides warning people against supporting government and foreign troops.

Taliban has yet to make comments.

Nigeria: Gunmen Raid Villages, Kill 30 in Jos

About 30 people were killed Saturday when gunmen, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, invaded some villages in Barkin-Ladi and Riyom Local Government areas of Plateau State in early morning attacks.

Those killed by the assailants, said to have been well armed and numbering about 100, included two security men, women and children. Many were left injured and several houses torched in the attack which occurred at about 6.30 a.m.

The attack came days after the new National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), visited the state during which he initiated a dialogue among various stakeholders designed to forge peace and reconciliation.

Vanguard learnt that the assailants, dressed in black, launched attacks on the Berom villages of Kakuruk, Kuzen, Ngyo, Kogoduk, Ruk, Dogo, Kufang, Kpapkpiduk, Kai in Barakin-Ladi Local Government Area.

About 15 people were said to have been killed at Kuzen, eight at Kakuruk and another eight in other villages in the local government.

The attackers were said to have later moved to villages in Riyom LG where they destroyed houses and other property but were successfully repelled by the people who, having got wind of their attack on their neighbors, mobilized and confronted them.

The member representing the two local government areas in the House of Representatives, Hon. Simon Mwadkon, described the attack as unfortunate at a time efforts were on to restore peace to the area.

He said the attack was a vindication of his outcry that there were terrorist elements in the two local government areas which ironically are under a state of emergency.

He confirmed that 20 bodies of those killed had been recovered while efforts were on to recover other bodies. He also confirmed the killing of two security men during the attacks.

It was learnt that men of the Special Task Force (STF) maintaining security in the state moved men into the area to track down the assailants. Residents said they heard multiple gun shots, Saturday evening, in what looked like an exchange between the security men and the attackers.

Media Officer of the STF, Captain Salisu Mustapha, said he was yet to get details of the casualty when contacted.

July 08., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader in Zharay district, Kandahar province, Friday.

The apprehended Taliban leader is an explosives expert and has directed several improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the province. Prior to his arrest, he had acquired multiple explosive components for future insurgent attacks.

The security force also detained several suspected insurgents as a result of this operation.

South

Afghan and coalition forces confirmed today an insurgent detained during a June 28 security operation in Kandahar district, Kandahar province, was a Taliban leader and improvised explosive device specialist. The leader led a cell of insurgents on multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

An Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a senior Taliban recruiter in Now Zad district, Helmand province, today. The insurgent recruiter serves as a Taliban leader in Washer district and operates in direct contact with senior Taliban leaders throughout the region. During the operation, several suspected insurgents were detained.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent during an operation to arrest a Taliban leader in Rashidan district, Ghazni province, today. The Taliban leader controls more than 50 insurgents and has directed attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Ghazni in recent months.

July 07., 2012. - RC-East operational update

BAGRAM, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces detained 10 insurgents, located two weapons caches and cleared seven improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, July 7.

Ghazni province
Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces detained an insurgent, found a weapons cache and cleared an IED during engagements in Gelan district. The detained suspect was transferred to a base for questioning. The cache contained small arms ammunition, grenades and other items being used for improvised explosive devices.

Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces found and safely cleared an IED in Ghazni district.

Khowst province
Afghan Uniformed Police and coalition forces detained an insurgent and located a weapons cache in Khowst district. The detained suspect was transferred to a base for questioning. The cache contained small arms ammunition, military personnel items and other items being used for improvised explosive devices.

Afghan Border Police and coalition forces found and safely cleared an IED in Gurbuz district.

Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces detained seven insurgent while responding to an IED find in Sabari district. The detained suspects were transferred to a base for questioning and the IED was safely cleared.

Laghman province
Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces found and safely cleared an IED in Mehtar Lam district.

Paktika province
Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces found and safely cleared an IED in Sar Rowzah district.

Paktiya province
Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces found and safely cleared an IED in Shwak district.

Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces detained an insurgent in Zurmat district. The detained suspect was found with small arms and ammunition and matched the name of a known insurgent. The insurgent was transferred to a base for questioning.

Operations in RC-East are still ongoing.

Explosion kill 14 Afghan civilians in Kandahar province

According to local authorities in southern Kandahar province heavy casualties were incurred to Afghan civilians in this province after two civilians cars hit improvised explosive device.

Provincial security chief Gen. Abdul Razaq confirming the report said the incident took place in Shanarai area at Arghistan district.

Gen. Abdul Razaq further added at least 14 Afghan civilians were killed and 3 others were injured following the incident.

He also said Afghan women and kids were also among those killed.

No group including the Taliban militants have so far claimed responsibility behind the incident. Local officials blame Taliban fighters for such incidents as Taliban fighters frequently use improvised explosive device and roadside bombs to target Afghan and coalition security forces which normally leads to civilians casualties
