Polish special forces officer killed in Afghanistan

UPDATED - Captain Krzysztof Woźniak was killed during an “anti-terrorist action” last night in the eastern Ghazni province in Afghanistan.
Captain Woźniak is the first Polish commando to die in action during a foreign mission.

The 36 year-old met his death as insurgents opened fire during an operation involving commandos from the Polish GROM special services, Colonel Miroslaw Ochyra, a spokesman for the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command has told Polish Radio.

Krzysztof Woźniak was on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, where Poland currently has over 2,000 troops stationed, and has left a wife and three children.

Thirty five Polish troops, including a medic, have been killed in action in Afghanistan, with at least 100 soldiers wounded. (pg)

UPDATE – Captain Wozniak, who was a member of the special forces GROM unit, it has been confirmed, had served in the Polish armed forces for 17 years. A number of troops were also injured by incoming fire from insurgents, who were taken to a field hospital for treatment.

WARSAW, Poland - Poland's Defence Ministry says that a Polish soldier has died of wounds he received in an operation in central Afghanistan
Capt. Krzysztof Wozniak, who served with an elite GROM unit, was fatally wounded early Wednesday in Ghazni province as the force was supporting an Afghan unit during a raid. Wozniak died in a military hospital.

The 36-year-old Wozniak is the 38th Polish soldier killed while serving with the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan since 2007.

Al-Qaeda weapons expert killed in eastern Afghanistan

An Al-Qaeda Network weapons expert was killed following a joint military operation by Afghan and coalition security forces in eastern Paktika province of Afghanistan.

Afghan and coalition forces confirmed on Friday the death of an al-Qaida weapons expert during a security operation in Mata Khan district, Paktika province, Wednesday.

NATO-led International Security Assistance Force following a statement announced, “During the operation the security force positively identified Taqwa – also known as Eissa Khan – transporting weapons toward a populated area. After ensuring no civilians were in the vicinity, the security force engaged Taqwa with a precision airstrike, killing him.”

The source further added, “As an al-Qaida weapons expert, Taqwa is suspected of directing multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, often using improvised explosive devices, and equipping insurgent and terrorist fighters with weapons, ammunition and explosives.”

Prior to his death, Taqwa was believed to be planning the abduction of several Afghan security force members, ISAF said following the statement adding that a post-strike assessment determined no civilian property was damaged and no civilians were harmed.

Anti-government armed militant groups yet to comment regarding the report.

18 rebels killed in Paktika operations

SHARAN (PAN): Eighteen armed insurgents were killed during operations in southeastern Paktika province over the past 24 hours, an official said on Friday.

Led by Mullah Nazir, an eight-member group was attacked by helicopter-borne coalition forces after they crossed the border from Pakistan into Barmal district.

Mukhlis Afghan, the governor's spokesman, old Pajhwok Afghan News the militants planned attacks in the restive border town. At least one fighter was injured during the air raid.

Another five rebels were killed after they attacked a police patrol in the Mangarto area of Sarobi district, where two suspected Taliban were killed when the explosives they were planting went off prematurely in the Navi Qala neighbourhood.

Four more rebels were killed during an operation by police in Zherai area of Janikhel district, Afghan said, adding that police and civilians were not harmed. Some weapons and ammunition were seized by coalition forces.

The mine planters’ bodies were lying at the scene.

Mines and Improvised Explosive Devices planted by insurgents are the number one killer of innocent civilians in Afghanistan.

Armed insurgents continue to completely disregard innocent civilian lives with their indiscriminate tactics.

The source further added, the leader controlled a large group of insurgents and conducted attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces in the district.

One mine planter killed in Paktika province and 10 armed insurgents killed in Uruzgan and Paktiya provinces

 

As a result of conflict between Afghan National Police and armed insurgents, seven armed insurgents were killed.

The incident took place in the Dasht Gul Shah region, Sayed Karam District of Paktiya province, today at 08:00 Am.

Also, during this conflict, Afghan National Police confiscated one PKM machine gun and three AK-47 assault rifles.

In a separate incident, as a result of conflict between Afghan Local Police and armed insurgents, three armed insurgents were killed and one other was wounded.

The incident took place in the Sartangi region, Khas Uruzgan District of Uruzgan province, last night at 02:00 Am.

No Afghan Local Police member harmed in this incident.

Also, during this conflict, Afghan Local Police confiscated amount of light weapons.

In the meantime, one mine planter was killed by his own explosives while he attempted to plant roadside mine in the main road of Jani Khil and Khir Kot Districts of Paktika province, today at 05:30 Am.

Taliban leader detained in eastern Paktika province

Afghan and coalition security forces captured a Taliban leader following a joint military operation at eastern Paktika province.

NATO-led International Security Assistance Force following a statement on Thursday announced fghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader during an operation in Zurmat district, Paktika province.

The statement further added, the leader who is an explosives expert, planned and conducted roadside bombings, suicide attacks and indirect fire attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces. He also owned an electronics shop where he held Taliban meetings and built remote-detonated improvised explosive devices.

The security force detained one additional insurgent and recovered several IED components as a result of this operation, ISAF added.

In a separate military operationg Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during a 10-day operation that ended Sunday in Khake Safayd district, Farah province. During the operation, the combined force searched a suspicious location and detained the suspected insurgents without incident.

The force also recovered 21 IEDs, four rocket-propelled grenades, one mortar, seven AK-47 rifles, one machine gun, more than 8 pounds (4 kilograms) of opium and 30 motorbikes during a subsequent search of the area. The suspected insurgents were taken in for questioning and the weapons cache was destroyed.

3 Paktika local policemen detained with suicide vest

SHARAN (PAN): Three local policemen and a resident were arrested for carrying a suicide vest in a police vehicle in southeastern Paktika province on Thursday, an official said.

The four were arrested with the suicide belt in Barmal district, local police commander, Gen. Azizullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the detained local policemen belonged to security checkpoint in Musa Nika area.

Although it remained unclear what for the policemen carried the vest which seemed to be brought from Pakistan, he said.

The governor's spokesman, Mukhlis Afghan, confirmed the arrests, but stopped short of giving details.

            The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
      
Sgt. Jerry D. Reed II, 30, of Russellville, Ark., died Feb. 16, in Paktika province, Afghanistan.

            Reed was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 172nd Separate Infantry Brigade, Grafenwoehr, Germany.

4 militants killed by Afghan army in Paktika province

According to local authorities in eastern Afghanistan, at least four militants were killed following armed clashes with the Afghan National Army soldiers in eastern Paktika province.

The officials further added, the militants were killed during clashes in Barmal district of eastern Paktika province.

A media official of the Afghan National Army 203 National Security Brigade Sadat Gul Hotak said, Afghan National Army soldiers also seized some weapons and ammunitions during the clashes with the militants group.

Mr. Hotak further added, Afghan National Army soldiers and Afghan civilians did not suffer any casualties during the clashes.

Taliban militants group yet to comment regarding the report.

Suicide assault team kills 7 Afghans in the east

A suicide assault team killed seven Afghans during an attack on a government compound in the eastern Afghan province of Paktika today. The Taliban claimed credit for the attack.

The three-man suicide assault team, which was armed with suicide vests, rocket launchers, and assault rifles, infiltrated the provincial center in Sharan, the capital of Paktika, and attacked the telecommunication center, the governor's office, and the headquarters of the National Directorate of Security. The Taliban fighters battled Afghan police and soldiers for six hours before all three were killed. Three policemen and four government workers were killed during the fighting.

Taliban spokesman Zahibullan Muhajid claimed credit on the terror group's website, Voice of Jihad, for the "martyr operation" in Paktika.

"Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate, armed with explosive vests and heavy and small arms, stormed the department of telecommunication in the capital of Paktia province on Wednesday morning," the Taliban statement read. "After taking positions in the strategic points within the facility, began targeting the intelligence department, governor house and other government buildings."

The Taliban claimed that "a large number of the puppet soldiers officers and officials were killed and wounded."

Today's terror assault was likely carried out by the Haqqani Network, the Taliban subgroup that dominates operations in the southeastern provinces of Paktika, Paktia, and Khost.
