23 militants killed in military operation in NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, June 1 (Xinhua) -- At least 23 militants were killed in an overnight operation launched by Pakistan army in the country 's northwest tribal area of Kurram Agency, reported local media ARY on Saturday.

The clashes between militants and security forces also killed two soldiers and wounded five others, said local media.

According to the local media reports, the operation started last night in the Para Chamkani area of Kurram Agency, a restive tribal region which borders to east Afghanistan.

During the operation, security forces also reportedly destroyed four militant hideouts.

On Friday, a statement issued the army mouthpiece ISPR said that 19 militants were killed in separate military operations conducted in Kurram Agency and its neighboring Khyber Agency since Thursday night.

In the operations, the two soldiers were also martyred, said the statement.

3 security personnel, 9 militants killed in clashes in NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, May 10 (Xinhua) -- At least three security personnel and nine militants were killed on Friday during armed clashes in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region of Kurram Agency, local media reported.

The clashes started after a group of militants armed with heavy weapons stormed a check post of security forces in Para Chamkani area of Kurram Agency, one of the country's restive tribal regions bordering Afghanistan, local media reported quoting official sources.

The attack was so sudden that the security personnel could not retaliate quickly and militants killed three security personnel present at the check post.

Soon after the attack the quick response force rushed to site and cordoned off the whole area along with a gunship helicopter hovering over the area.

The surrounded militants opened fire at the forces besides throwing hand grenades and launching rockets at the forces to make the way to flee from the area. In the cross fire, nine militants were killed and eight others injured while some of them succeeded in running away.

In these clashes at least four security personnel were also injured.

Security forces shifted the bodies and injured to the army hospital in the area.

Following the clashes, security forces launched a grand search operation in the tribal region to arrest the escaped militants.

Earlier on Monday, a suicide bomber targeted a political gathering in the same region killing 26 besides leaving over 40 others injured.

2 killed, 20 injured in roadside bomb blast in northwest Pakistan

Two persons were killed and nearly 20 others injured when a bus was targeted with a roadside bomb in the restive Kurram tribal region of northwest Pakistan today, security officials said.

The incident occurred in Pir Qayyum area of the tribal district.

The bus was going from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa capital Peshawar to Parachinar, the main town of Kurram Agency.

Two persons were killed instantly and 17 injured persons were taken to a hospital in Parachinar, security officials told TV news channels.

Hundreds of people have lost their lives in sectarian violence between rival Shia and Sunni tribesmen in Kurram Agency over the past four years.

No group claimed responsibility for today's attack.

SADDA: Two people were killed and 17 others wounded when a homemade bomb exploded next to a bus on the outskirts of the town of Sadda in the northwestern Kurram tribal region, near the Afghanistan border, local government officials said.

The Pakistani military has been conducting offensives against militant hideouts in Kurram, and dozens have been killed in intense fighting since the start of the year.

12 militants killed by Pakistan army in NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Pakistani army has killed 12 militants and took control of a highly volatile area in the country's northwest tribal region of Kurram Agency on Saturday, local media reported.

According to a report by local Urdu TV Channel Dunya, troops attacked militants' hideouts and killed at least 12 of them in Jogi area of Kurram Agency, one of the seven tribal agencies along Pak-Afghan borders.

The Pakistani army had cleared most of the Kurram region from the Taliban militants earlier last year, however, some of the areas including Jogi were still under the control of militants from where they carried out attacks on the army and pro-government tribal people.

After a successful five-day operation against militants, government troops took control of the area on Friday afternoon.

Earlier on Saturday, 11 militants were killed and two hideouts destroyed in a security forces action in the same area.

During the last five-day operation, 52 militants and six soldiers got killed while 23 soldiers sustained injuries in clashes between militants and government soldiers in Kurram Agency.

20 militants killed in clashes in NW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- At least 20 militants were killed and 22 soldiers injured in clashes between militants and security forces in Kurram tribal region of northwest Pakistan on Thursday, local media reported.

The clashes broke out in wee hours when militants attacked security forces in Jogi area of Kurram agency, a militancy-hit tribal area at Pak-Afghan border where Pakistani soldiers are battling Taliban militants, local Urdu TV channel ARY reported.

During the shootout, 20 militants were killed and 37 others sustained injuries. Forces also destroyed two militants' hideouts.

At least 22 soldiers of Pakistan Army were reportedly injured during the clashes.

Both sides used heavy weapons including rockets and mortars in the clashes.

Pakistan army has cleared most of the Taliban militants from the Kurram region. Some of the areas, however, are still under the control of militants from where they carry out attacks on Pakistan army and pro-government tribal people. The forces have been conducting major operation against the militants in Kurram and the nearby Orakzai region over the past few months, they are making progress in areas where militants are still active.

During the last three days, 27 militants and six soldiers were killed while 23 soldiers sustained injuries in clashes between militants and soldiers in Kurram Agency.
