KABUL, Afghanistan (May 12) — An Afghan National
Security Force supported by coalition forces conducted two
counter-narcotic missions in Baghran district, Helmand province and Deh
Rawud district, Uruzgan province, between 8-10 May.
The combined forces discovered approximately 6,600 pounds (3,000 kilograms) of hashish, 407 pounds (185 kilograms) of opium, 1,320 pounds (600 kilograms) of poppy seeds and 330 pounds (150 kilograms) of morphine.
The security forces destroyed all drugs on site. In addition, the security forces seized narcotics processing equipment, improvised explosive device components and weapons.

In Arghistan district, Kandahar province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to capture a Taliban leader today. The leader was responsible for constructing, distributing and planting improvised explosive devices for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Kandahar and Daman districts. He also planed indirect fire attacks on Kandahar Airfield. Insurgents fired on the security force as the Afghan troops attempted to take the commander into custody. The security force returned fire killing the two insurgents. The security force recovered multiple weapons and grenades, four pressure plates improvised explosive devices, multiple remote control receivers, remote control transmitters, and timers as a result of this operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force conducted a search for a senior Taliban commander, during an operation in Charkh district, Logar province. The commander conducted roadside bombings, indirect fire attacks and other operations against Afghan and coalition troops throughout the district. He also supplied weapons and ammunition to insurgents in the area. Insurgents fired on the Afghan and coalition troops as they approached the leader’s suspected location. The security force returned fire killing the two insurgents and one other insurgent. The security force detained one additional insurgent and recovered multiple weapons as a result of this operation.

The commander coordinated and planned attacks on Afghan and coalition forces throughout the region. He was directly involved in the improvised explosive device attack on a coalition vehicle on May 6 in Ahmad Khel district, Paktiya province. After ensuring no civilians were in the vicinity of the target, and as the Haqqani commander was preparing for an imminent attack, the security force engaged the target with a precision air strike. The commander and one other insurgent were killed as a result of the strike. A follow-on assessment of the area determined no civilians were harmed and no civilian property was damaged.
Finally, in Wali Muhammad Shahid Khugyani district, Ghazni province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to capture a Taliban leader today. The leader conducts roadside bombings against Afghan and coalition security forces in Wali Muhammad Shahid Khugyani and other Ghazni districts. He also provides explosives expertise to the insurgents in the area. The security force detained one suspected insurgent and recovered approximately 308 pounds (140 kilograms) of explosive material.
