DOD Identifies Navy Casualty

            The Department of Defense announced today the death of a sailor who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

            Chief Petty Officer Christian Michael Pike, 31, of Peoria, Ariz., died March 13 in Landstuhl, Germany, as a result of combat-related injuries sustained on March 10 while conducting stability operations in Maiwand District, Afghanistan. Pike was assigned to a West Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit.

PHOENIX – Flags at all state governmentbuildings are flying at half staff in honor of a member of the Navy from Peoria who died in Afghanistan earlier this week.

Chief Petty Officer Christian Michael Pike, 31, died March 13 of injuries suffered March 10 while conducting stability operations in Maiwand District, west of Kandahar, the U.S. Defense Department announced March 14. After being injured, Mr. Pike was taken to a U.S. Army hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

Mr. Pike was assigned to a West Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit, said Lt. Cmdr. David McKinney, a spokesman for Naval Special Warfare Command.

Gov. Jan Brewer ordered flags at government buildings lowered immediately in the hours after the Defense Department’s announcement.

“My heart breaks for the family and friends of Chief Petty Officer Christian Michael Pike,” the governor stated in a prepared release.

“I ask that all Arizonans join me in thoughtful prayer for CPO Pike, his loved ones and his fellow Navy brothers and sisters,” the statement continued. “Please keep all of Arizona’s servicemen and women in your hearts and thoughts. Their serve and sacrifice must never be taken for granted.”

Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.

Mr. Pike joined the Navy Aug. 16, 2001, and following training was assigned to the NTTC Corry Station, then the USS Cleveland, according to a biography supplied by the Naval Special Warfare unit in California. In 2007, he moved to a Navy Information Operations Command facility in Georgia before reporting to the Special Warfare unit July 25, 2011. It could not immediately be learned how long Mr. Pike had been in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Most of the 68,000 U.S. forces now in Afghanistan are scheduled to be withdrawn by the end of 2014, according to the latest timetable provided by President Barack Obama to end involvement in what is America’s longest war.

            Cdr. Job W. Price, 42, of Pottstown, Pa., died Dec. 22 of a non-combat related injury while supporting stability operations in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. Price was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit in Virginia Beach, Va.

            This incident is currently under investigation.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Pottstown High School graduate Navy SEAL Cdr. Job W. Price, 42, died Saturday while serving in southern Afghanistan.

A statement from the Naval Special Warfare Group Two said Price died of non-combat related injuries while supporting stability operations.

The exact cause of death is currently under investigation, according to the Navy.

The Associated Press reported Sunday that a U.S. military official said the death “appears to be the result of suicide.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the death is still being investigated.

Price is survived by his wife, Stephanie, and daughter Jillian, 9, of Virginia Beach.

Price was a senior commander with the Virginia Beach, Va.-based SEAL Team 4, which trains Afghan local police to stave off the Taliban in remote parts of Afghanistan. The East Coast-based SEAL team is based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek – Fort Story, Va.

The son of Harry and Nancy Price of Pottstown, Price was a 1989 graduate of Pottstown High School, where he was a standout varsity wrestler and member of the football team, both of which won PAC-10 championships in his senior year. He was also an academic standout and member of the National Honor Society.

He was a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Price was honored last year as a Pottstown School District Honor Roll Honoree.

In a statement Sunday night to Pottstown School District staff, John Armato, school district director of community relations, described Price as “self-motivated, focused, and disciplined.He refused to accept anything but his best effort but could always have the ability to laugh at himself and with others.”

Price’s father Harrywas a member of the school board for a number of years and a founding member of the Foundation for Pottstown Education, according to Armato.

“Job understood the importance of placing the greater good above self and dedicated his career to helping to ensure our freedoms,” Armato wrote. “Our country has lost a leader, dedicated patriot, true American hero and protector of our freedoms.”

“He was a motivator and an inspiration,” he added, speaking as a former coach and a friend. “He embodied as an American the qualities that make our country a great country. The nation and Pottstown have suffered a great loss.”

Armato said funeral services are being planned in Virginia Beach.

            Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas D. Checque, 28, of Monroeville, Pa., died of combat related injuries suffered Dec. 8, while supporting operations near Kabul, Afghanistan. Checque was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit.

Checque graduated from Norwin High School in 2002, according to district spokesman Jon Szish. He was a member of the wrestling team.

Checque, a decorated 10-year veteran, was assigned to an East Coast-based Navy Special Warfare Command unit in 2004, the Special Warfare Command said. SEAL Team Six is the unit that killed Osama bin Laden last year, though it is unknown whether Checque was on the bin Laden mission.

His awards include the Bronze Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and two combat action ribbons, among others. He served in the Iraq War as well as Afghanistan.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew G. Kantor, 22, of Gillette, died Thursday while supporting stability efforts in Afghanistan, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Saturday.

Kantor, a special warfare operator assigned to an East Coast-based SEAL team out of Fort Story, Va., perished in Zabul Province, officials said.

According to Lt. David Lloyd, spokesman for Naval Special Warfare Group Two, Kantor was killed by a gunshot wound sustained in combat during Operation Enduring Freedom.

In extending his condolences, Capt. Robert Smith, commander of Naval Special Warfare Group Two, called Kantor "a true warrior."

"He has paid the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of freedom," Smith said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and shipmates during this very difficult time."

According to media reports, Kantor is the 47th service member from New Jersey to die in U.S. military operations in Afghanistan since they began 11 years ago.

Kantor's family requested that no other information be released at this time, according to the defense department.
