Jan. 08., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan (Jan. 8) – An Afghan and coalition security force captured a senior Taliban network facilitator named Mashahud during a security operation in Surkh Rod district, Nangarhar province, January 1.

Mashahud is a well-known weapons facilitator who planned large-scale attacks against the local populace throughout the region. He has also been linked to a command wire bomb attack on Dec. 21, 2011, that killed five people in Ghazni.

In Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, an Afghan and coalition security force discovered a weapons cache during a routine patrol yesterday. The cache consisted of six improvised explosive devices, six anti-personnel mines and two five-gallon jugs filled with homemade explosives. The security force destroyed the cache on site without incident.

An Afghan and coalition security force captured two Taliban facilitators during an operation in Maiwand district, Kandahar province, today. The facilitators distributed weapons, coordinated the movement of insurgent fighters, and planned and conducted attacks against coalition forces throughout the province.

In Ghorak district, Kandahar province, an Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator during an operation today. The facilitator financed the purchase of explosives and distributed bomb-making materials to insurgents for use in attacks against coalition forces. The security force also seized approximately 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms) of heroin and detained two additional suspected insurgents during the operation.

East
An Afghan and coalition security force discovered an explosive materials cache during a routine patrol in Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, yesterday. The security force confiscated 880 pounds (400 kilograms) of materials from the scene and will be destroyed at a later date. Security forces also detained two suspected insurgents during the operation.

In Sabari district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered a weapons cache during a routine patrol yesterday. The cache consisted of six mortar rounds, 13 recoilless rifles and 19 grenades. All of the weapons were confiscated and will be destroyed at a later date.

An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani facilitator during an operation in Zurmat district, Paktiya province, today. The facilitator conducted attacks against coalition forces. The security force confiscated weapons and bomb making materials and detained one additional suspected insurgent during the operation.

In Surkh Rod district, Nangarhar province, an Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator during an operation, today. The facilitator directed a group of insurgent fighters in multiple attacks against Afghan forces. The security force seized various weapons and bomb making materials. One additional suspected insurgent was detained during the operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani leader during an operation in Pul-e ‘Alam district, Logar province, today. The leader coordinated attacks against Afghan forces and procured weapons and bomb making materials for insurgent fighters. Two additional suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.

DOD Identifies Air Force Casualties

The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of three airmen who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

They died Jan. 5 in Shir ghazi, Helmand province, Afghanistan, when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device.

Killed were:

Senior Airman Bryan R. Bell, 23, of Erie, Pa. He was assigned to the 2nd Civil Engineer Squadron, Barksdale Air Force Base, La. For more information media may contact the Air Force 2nd Bomb Wing public affairs office at 318-456-3309.

More than 80 kgs of drugs seized in Baghlan province

Local security officials in northern Afghanistan on Saturday announced to seize more than 80 kilograms of drugs in northern Baghlan province.

Baghlan provincial security chief Gen. Syed Zamanuddin Hussaini told reporters on Saturday, Afghan police in coordination with the counter-narcotics officials managed to seize at least 65 kilograms of Hashish and 18 kilograms of opium in northern Pul-e-Khumri city.

Gen. Hussaini further added, the mentioned amount of drugs were planted inside a Rickshaw and was transported from central Baghlan district to Pul-e-Khumri.

Gen. Hussaini said, Afghan police the drugs based on the intelligence reports at Bandar Mazar in Pul-e-Khumri city.

He also said, at least one suspect was detained in connection to the smuggle of the drugs but the main smugglers according to Gen. Hussaini are the other individuals who are being approached by Afghan police forces.

Provincial security chief Gen. Syed Zamanuddin Hussaini said that close cooperation by the residents of this province with the Afghan security forces will lead to a positive result to attain further achievements in the future.

In the meantime local residents of the northern northern Pul-e-Khumri city are optimistic for the recent operations of the national police forces in this province.

Afghan police recently stepped up actions to arrest criminal murderers, smugglers, kidnappers and seized various alcoholic drinks and drugs from various regions of northern Pul-e-Khumri city.

4 Afghan Local police killed in Herat province

According to local authorities in western Afghanistan, at least five Afghan police service members were killed and injured following a roadside bomb explosion in Herat province.

The officials further added, the incident took place at Shindand district of western Herat province.

Herat provincial police commandment following a press release confirmed the incident and said, at least four Afghan Local Police service members were killed during the incident and 1 other was injured.

The source further added, the incident took place after a vehicle with the Afghan Local Police forces on board struck with a roadside bomb at Pormakan area in Shindand district.

No group including the Taliban militants have so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

Taliban militants group normally used improvised explosive device and roadside bombs as the weapon of their choice to target Afghan and coalition forces.
