Maiduguri — A policeman and four suspected members of the Jama'atu Ahlis Sunnah Lidda'awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram, were killed in Potiskum on Saturday during a fierce fight between insurgents and security forces, the Joint Task Force ( JTF) said in a statement yesterday.

Residents of Yindiski, a suburb along Gashua road in the outskirt of Potiskum, said the casualty figure may be much higher because they heard multiple gunshots for over four hours at Juma'a, a nearby settlement behind the Maximum Prisons Quarters in the area.

They said the shooting started shortly after a combined military and police troops cordoned a location and restricted movements of people.

A local said trouble started when some gunmen fired at a soldier and a policeman who were manning a checkpoint.

Spokesman of the JTF, Lieutenant Lazarus Eli said a cordon and search operation was carried out at Yandiski where 59 suspects were arrested during the operation for interrogation.

Nigeria: Gunmen Kill Soldier, Four Others in Maiduguri

A member of the Joint Task Force (JTF) was Monday killed in an explosion in Maiduguri that left four others seriously injured.

It was learnt that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which was targeted at the task force patrol vehicle by suspected members of the Boko Haram exploded along the popular Lagos Street in the city, causing panic among residents of the town.

According to sources, the JTF men were on routine patrol in the area when the bomb went off around 8.am, which left the patrol vehicle badly damaged and in flame.

In another development, four people were said to have been shot dead on Sunday night by some gunmen in Damboa road area in Maiduguri.

The sect also said it will target female government officials.

It said between seven and 10 spouses of the group's members are being held by security operatives.

In a short video released on YouTube Monday its leader Abubakar Shekau, said the group was aware of what would be going on where the spouses of the members are held.

Shekau, who also vowed that the group would launch attacks to protest the release of an anti-Islam video on YouTuba, said: "As at Saturday, when I made this video, between seven and 10 of them (women) have been incarcerated.

"We don't know where they are kept or what they are doing to them. But as Muslims, we know what unbelievers do to women. Now, married women are victims of state terror."

Shekau also promised hard times for political and traditional rulers of Northern origin. Among those the group threatened to attack in the video were governors, emirs and others in positions of authority.

The grouse of the group is that they have betrayed the people.

Shekau said: "This message is for those in authority.

"Wallahi you have no resting place again and no resting time again. Either we are here or we are not. You have messed up yourselves and you have messed up your own situation."

Shekau also denied that the group was negotiating with the government.

He said: "The claim that we are negotiating with the state is untrue. That is the figment of their imagination. We are not in dialogue with anyone.

Shekau admitted that the spokesman of the group, Abu Qaqa, has been captured by security operatives and that he was in the custody of the State Security Service (SSS).

"The most outrageous of the claims is that they have killed some of our leaders or have arrested some of our leaders."

He said if the leadership of any group was killed, it must be the one created by the government.

Yola — The Joint Task Force, JTF, has raided a bomb factory operated by the suspected Boko Haram members in Mubi, the commercial nerve centre of Adamawa State, and arrested no fewer than 156 members of the sect, including six females and five children.

One of the suspects was killed during the operation.

Among items recovered from the raid, code named Operation Restore Sanity, were ready-to-use improvised explosive devices, chemicals, over 500 daggers, 9 AK-47 assault rifles, locally made pistols, rocket launchers, among other arms and ammunition.

Addressing newsmen after inspecting the compound, where the raid took place, Commander of the 23rd Armoured Brigade, Yola, Brigadier-General John Nwaoga, hinted that the operation was sequel to the recent clandestine activities and destruction of telecoms masts in Mubi.

Brigadier-General Nwaoga, who was accompanied by Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Godfrey Okeke, and the State Director of State Security Service, SSS, said the raid had helped the military intelligence to unravel the mystery behind the protracted wave of shooting and bomb attacks in Mubi Town.

Nwaoga said: "Based on intelligence report, a team of JTF isolated the area, cordoned it and made sure that innocent and law-abiding citizens were not hurt."

He, however, said the operation was "sweeping" and assured that those arrested would be thoroughly screened to isolate innocent ones. He said a member of the group was gunned down during a gun duel with JTF.

Nigeria: JTF Discovers 36 Bombs in Boko Haram Hideout

Following Monday's killing of a Boko Haram kingpin suspected to be its spokeman, Abu Qaqa, and the arrest of two others, the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) has uncovered a large cache of locally made bombs prepped for launching attacks on various targets in Kano, the Kano State capital.

The special military task force said in a statement Tuesday that 36 prepared improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were part of the recovery made by the security operatives during the capture of two members of the terrorist sect.

Although the discovery has helped in preventing imminent attacks on targets in Kano, the insurgent group struck in Bama, Borno State on Monday night, killing the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Zanna Malam Gana.

JTF spokesman in Kano, Lieutenant Ikedichi Iweha, said in a statement that the security agency, after the Monday incident, raided the suspects' heavily-wired hideout, believed to be the sect's control centre in Kano, during which two AK 47 rifles, two pump action rifles, one berretta rifle and one smoke discharger were seized.

The JTF, during the raid, also impounded 433 rounds of 7.62 Nato ammunition, 80 rounds of 7.62 special ammunition, two AK 47 magazines, 13 laptops, two motorcycles, four printers, one photocopier, one 33 slots Zenith disc writer, a generating set, religious books, large quantities of CD plates and two decoders.

Other items removed from the hideout included two satellite dishes, a 21" television set, one DVD player, two bags of fertiliser and 10 hand held Motorola radios.

Iweha added that the killing of the Boko Haram chief and the arrest of two others had foiled the group's planned attack on Kano.

The Islamic sect, however, continued to unleash a reign of terror on Borno State where it killed Gana.

The attack on Gana came a day after the insurgents engaged security agents in a gun duel in Borno on Sunday night, leading to the death of no fewer than 10 persons.

Gana was killed in Bama, his hometown, which is about 75 kilometres from Maiduguri, the capital of the troubled state.

Sources said he was at a local meeting place with some friends and relatives when four gunmen stormed the venue.

"They demanded money first and he immediately offered N100,000. Then they said it was not enough and he begged that he should be allowed to pick some money in his car just in front of where they were seated but they said there was no need.

"They said his journey has ended today (Monday) and they shot him in the chest and head and then fled," an eyewitness and family member of the deceased recalled Tuesday in Bama during the burial of the commissioner.

Gana, 63, was said to have travelled to Bama during the weekend and had planned to return to Maiduguri on Sunday but was compelled to alter his plan when JTF troops shut down the Bama-Maiduguri Road after the Sunday bomb explosions and killings.

He reportedly returned to Bama on Sunday afternoon, but unknown to him that he was returning to his death.

"He left Bama on Sunday morning to return to Maiduguri but was compelled to return to Bama again because soldiers had already cordoned off the Bama end of the road in Maiduguri due to the bomb blast and killings that day.

"He stayed on the road for about three hours and decided to return to Bama again when it became impossible for him to enter the state capital," the eyewitness said.

The state Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, who led government delegation to attend the funeral rites, could not control his emotion as he shed tears.

In Maiduguri, men of the JTF and some members of the Boko Haram sect had engaged in an exchange of gunfire that left at least 10 persons dead while some houses were set ablaze.

An eyewitness, Mallam Usman Abdullahi, told reporters that a locally made bomb, suspected to have been planted on Sunday by some terrorists targeting a security patrol vehicle in Gwange Ward of Maiduguri, exploded leaving two men of the JTF seriously injured.

"Soon after the explosion, gunshots followed, but the JTF after repelling the attack quickly cordoned off the area," he said.

A hospital attendant at the State Specialist Hospital, who craved anonymity, told THISDAY that he saw two patrol vehicles of the JTF with some bodies around the gate of the hospital, adding that each of the vehicles had five bodies in it.

Also on Sunday at about 8.45 pm, some gunmen shot and injured a businessman and a stalwart of the ruling All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Yobe State, Alhaji Mustapha Sheriff Mashidimami.

It was gathered that the gunmen, who invaded the family house of the politician in Maiduguri, demanded some unspecified amount of money, but when he was unable to meet their demand, they shot and injured him before they fled.

Efforts to speak on the phone to the JTF spokesman, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Gideon Jibrin, were unsuccessful because of communication glitches occasioned by the attacks on some telecommunications masts of service providers in the state.

In a related development, the former Controller-General of the Nigerian Prisons, Jarma Katagun, has died as a result of complications from the gunshot wounds inflicted on him by suspected members of Boko Haram.

Katagun was shot in his hometown of Azare, Bauchi State, shortly after he left a mosque and was rushed to a local hospital for immediate treatment.

He later died following complications from his gunshot wounds. Also, two security guards attached to the ex-prisons official lost their lives in the attack.

Nigeria: JTF Kills Terrorist Kingpin in Kano, Arrest Two

The Joint Military Task force (JTF) in Kano on Monday killed a top extremist and arrested two top commanders of the Boko Haram sect in an early morning operation carried out in the Kano metropolis.

The Spokesman of the Joint task Force (JTF) in Kano, Lieutenant Ikedichi Iweha told reporters: "I can confirm to you the killing and the arrest of two sect members during an operation we carried out this (Monday).

Lieutenant Iweha, who could not confirm the identity of those arrested, stated that "I cannot confirm to you the identity of those arrested because I don't have the nominal roll of the sect, but the operation is still going on."

It was gathered that the person killed and the two who were arrested were among the top most wanted sect members by the security agencies.

There were speculations in Kano on Monday that the sect's spokesman was one of those arrested during the raid by the security personnel, while sources revealed that among the two arrested included a woman, who is believed to be close to the sect.

Security sources disclosed that the non-disclosure of the details of the arrested sect members was part of the new method by the JTF to hide the identity of sect members who are killed or arrested.

Nigeria: JTF Bursts Another Boko Haram Bomb Factory, Kills Three

The Joint military Task Force (JTF) in the wee hours of yesterday invaded a suspected Boko Haram bomb factory at Haye, a suburb of Hotoron Arewa Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, arrested a number of persons and carted away bomb-making materials.

Elsewhere in Maiduguri, Borno State, the sect suffered another misfortune as three of its suspected members were killed by the JTF.

Conducting reporters round the house, spokesman of the JTF, Lieutenant Ikedichi Iweha, said two women and a couple of children found in the house were rescued by the task force and taken away.

"The main person that we are looking for was not arrested because he was not in the house but we have rescued women and children from the house before the operation carried out by the operatives," Iweha said.

According to him, "Pressure is consistently being mounted on them by the security, and people should not be afraid as security agencies are trying to ensure that Kano is safe and we are always appealing to people to report any suspicious person or movement in their community."

He said items recovered at the house included improvised explosive device (IEDs), assorted containers, prime drum, liquid substances, charcoal and a film leaflet of Osama bin Laden with the inscription: 'Osama bin Laden dead at last'.

"Two women and a couple of children that we have rescued have been taken away for investigation, and the house will be brought down using military armoured carrier," he added.

The spokesman of the JTF expressed appreciation to the general public, adding that "people should not be afraid to alert the security agencies with information about suspicious people or their movements because we want to make sure that Kano is safe."

It was observed that two armoured personal carriers (APC) and other military vehicles were used to cordon off the house, while the residents were seen saluting the military for their wonderful job in the area.

Meanwhile, the JTF in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, yesterday killed three suspected Boko Haram members in a stolen vehicle.

THISDAY gathered that the suspected members of the sect were killed at the Molai military post, located at the outskirts of Maiduguri while attempting to flee in a stolen vehicle.

A military source revealed that the victims were planning to launch attacks on Biu town in the stolen vehicle.

Spokesman of JTF in the state, Lt-Col. Sagir Musa, in a press statement said: "Following a distress call, the Joint Task Force Operation Restore Order 1 at 12 noon on Monday, encountered Boko Haram terrorists that snatched a vehicle and were moving towards Biu. In the process, there were exchanges of gun fire at the military posts where three suspected terrorists were killed."

He added that the stolen vehicle, in which the suspects were fleeing, was also recovered and returned to the owner in Maiduguri.

He said the JTF was on top of the security situation in the state, urging residents and other members of the general public to continue to cooperate with the security task force and other security agents by providing information on the sect members' hideouts and their modus operandi.

Also confirming the incident, the Field Operations Officer of the JTF in Borno State, Col. Victor Ebhaleme, said: "Three suspected Boko Haram terrorists who went to rob some residents of their valuables were killed in a shootout while trying to flee the scene."

Ebhaleme, who spoke on phone, also said: "With the way we are cracking down on the Boko Haram terrorists, we strongly believe that their end is in sight. Some of them have now resorted to armed robbery and other forms of criminality, but we will surely fish them out."

In a related development, one Stephen Pam, a staff member of Borno State House of Assembly was killed by suspected Boko Haram members.

Pam, according to sources, was killed at his residence in Galadima, within Maiduguri metropolis.

In another attack by the sect, two brothers were killed at Kofa Mela part of the town, which is opposite the Maiduguri New Prison.

The sect was said to have also killed a welder at the notorious Abbaganaram part of the city yesterday.

The killing at Galadima, Kofa Mela and Abbaganaram areas which are on the same axis of the town caused heavy traffic along that axis as vehicles were made to undergo serious check on the popular Ibrahim Imam Way.

However, information could not be got from relevant authorities as the erratic telecommunications network made it impossible to reach the officers.

In a related development, unknown gunmen, on Monday night, killed and set three persons ablaze in Barkin Ladi Local Government area of Plateau State. This is the second of such attacks in one week.

THISDAY gathered that just last week, a councillor in the local government was also attacked and killed by unknown persons.

This time, it was learnt that the Director of Finance and Supply of Jos East Local Government and two others who were in the same car heading towards Gashish village in the local government were attacked.

The local government, which is under emergency rule along with three others in the state, have been under frequent attacks by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen for quite some time.

Sources close to the scene of the attack disclosed that the three occupants were attacked with guns and other dangerous weapons at about 8:30pm.

When contacted, the spokesman of the Special Task Force, Captain Markus Mdahyelya, who confirmed the incident, said: "Three unidentified people were ambushed and killed on Monday in the border area between Barkin-Ladi and Bokkos Local Government Areas of the state."
