4 killed, 7 wounded in violence in Iraq

BAGHDAD, May 31 (Xinhua) -- At least four people, including three policemen, were killed and seven others injured in clashes and attacks in Iraq on Friday, a police source said.
Three policemen were killed in clashes with gunmen early Friday in the city of Fallujah, 50 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Elsewhere, a worshiper was killed and four others were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near a Sunni mosque after Friday prayers in the Saidiya area in southwestern Baghdad, he said.

Also on Friday, an Iraqi police officer and two civilians were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded near a checkpoint in Sharqat, some 280 km north of Baghdad, he added.

The attacks came amid escalation of sectarian tension between the Sunni and Shiite communities in Iraq, which has been at its highest level since the U.S. troops pulled out from the country at the end of 2011.

BAGHDAD, April 21 (Xinhua) -- A total of nine people were killed and 20 others injured when a roadside bomb struck a popular restaurant in central Iraq on Sunday, the police said.

The bombing attack in downtown Fallujah, 50 km west of Iraq's capital Baghdad, also caused material damage to the restaurant and nearby shops, a local police source told Xinhua.

The death toll was preliminary and might increase as rescuers were working at the site, the source said, adding that the security forces had cordoned off the scene.

No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Violence is still common in Iraq despite the dramatic decrease since its peak in 2006 and 2007 when the country was engulfed in sectarian killings.

Separate attacks in Iraq kill 11

BAGHDAD, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- As many as 11 people were killed, most of whom security force personnel, in a series of attacks on Thursday in several Iraqi cities, said the police.
A police official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that gunmen clashed with security forces at a village in Baaj town of the northern Nineveh province, killing Colonel Khalid Naddawi, the commander of a regiment and wounding two of his guards.

Meanwhile, an unidentified armed group with light and medium weapons, attacked a military convoy in Aljughaifi district in the city center of Fallujah, killing three soldiers and injuring two others, said the police official.

In another incident, armed militants travelling in a civilian car attacked a police checkpoint in Nuaimiya area near the city of Fallujah, killing two policemen.

Also in the city of Fallujah, gunmen planted a bomb under a watchtower in al-Askari district and blew it up, killing two soldiers, said the police source.

Elsewhere in the capital city of Baghdad, gunmen attacked a police checkpoint at al-Rabea Street, leaving two policemen killed and four others wounded.

Two road-side bombs exploded at the Jordan interception near Baghdad, killing one civilian and wounding five others.

Three killed, 35 injured in Iraq's violence

BAGHDAD, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed and 35 injured in separate bomb attacks in west and north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Sunday, the police said.

A roadside bomb went off in central the city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, killing a child and wounding three civilians, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, three Iraqi soldiers were injured when a booby-trapped car struck their patrol while travelling on a main road in central Fallujah, the source said.

Three passers-by were also wounded by the attack, the source added.

Insurgent attacks continue in the once volatile Sunni Arab area in west of Baghdad that stretches through Anbar province to Iraq's western borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Earlier in the day, a security source from Salahudin province in north of Baghdad reportedly said that a car bomb went off in the morning near a gas station in central the city of Shirqat, some 120 km north of the provincial capital city of Tikrit, killing a policeman and wounding 24 people including seven policemen.

Also in the morning, the source said that a roadside bomb struck a police vehicle near the city of Tuz-Khurmato, some 90 km east of Tikrit, killing a police officer and wounding another officer and a policeman.

Salahudin province is a Sunni-dominated province. Its capital city of Tikrit, some 170 km north of Baghdad, is the hometown of the former President Saddam Hussein.

Violence and sporadic high-profile bomb attacks still common in the Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease in violence since its peak in 2006 and 2007 when the country was engulfed in sectarian killings.

BAGHDAD, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Two policemen were killed and five people injured Saturday in separate bomb and gunfire attacks in central and eastern Iraq, while the Iraqi security forces captured a suicide bomber in Baghdad, the police said.

In central Iraq, a roadside bomb went off near a police vehicle in southern of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, killing one policeman aboard and wounding two others, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Also in Fallujah, gunmen planted bombs in the house of Shiekh Khaldoun Eliwi, a leader of the government-backed Awakening Council group, and blew them up in the town of Saqlawiyah northern of the city, injuring three members of his family, the source said.

Eliwi himself escaped the blast unharmed as he was not at the house when the attack occurred, the source added.

The Awakening Council group, also known as Sons of Iraq movement or Sahwa, consists of mostly anti-U.S. Sunni insurgent militant groups, who turned their rifles to fight al-Qaida network after Sahwa's leaders became dismayed by al-Qaida's brutality and religious zealotry.

In Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, gunmen using assault rifles opened fire on a policeman in front of his house in the town of Baladrouz, some 95 km northeast Baghdad, shot him dead before they fled the scene, a provincial police source anonymously told Xinhua.

Also in the province, police forces raided a safe house of an insurgents cell in an area located just west of the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, arresting three suspects, the source said.

In Baghdad, Iraqi security forces arrested a suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest at a checkpoint in the capital's northwestern district of Hurriyah, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Troops deployed in the district were looking for a female suicide bomber who believed to be split from the bomber before his arrest, he said.

The attacks came a few days ahead of the Arab League summit as Baghdad is preparing to host the leaders of the Arab nations on March 29.

RAMADI, Iraq, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Four people were killed and two others wounded in separate gunfire and bomb attack in Iraq's western province of Anbar, a provincial police source said on Monday.

Gunmen using assault rifles stormed the house of Sheikh Ketab al-Issawi, chieftain of a local tribe in southern city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, and dragged him out of his house before they shot him dead, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The attackers also wounded Issawi's son during their breaking into the house, the source said.

In a separate incident, a sticky bomb attached to a car carrying three police officers detonated late on Sunday night in central of the provincial capital city of Ramadi, some 110 km west of Baghdad, killing two officers and wounding the third, the source said.

Also in the province, the body of Osama Abdul-Razzaq al-Kubaisy, a judge of the local criminal court in the city of al-Qaim, was found inside his house in the western outskirts of the city, some 230 km west of Ramadi, the source added.

Kubaisy's body was badly charred after being repeatedly stabbed with sharp object, he said, adding that the victim's family was not at the house when the attack occurred late on Sunday.

Insurgent attacks continue in the once volatile Sunni Arab area west of Baghdad that stretches through the province to Iraq's western borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

2 women killed in attack on house of anti-Qaida leader in western Iraq

RAMADI, Iraq, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Two women were killed in a gunmen's attack on the house of a local Awakening Council group leader in Iraq's western province of Anbar on Saturday, a provincial police source said.

The attack occurred in the morning when gunmen stormed the house of Shiekh Dhiyab Mahmoud, leader of the government backed Awakening Council group in the town of Grama near the city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, the source from Anbar's provincial operations command told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The attackers shot dead Mahmoud's wife and daughter, while Mahmoud himself escaped the attack unharmed as he was not at home at the time of the attack, the source said.
