US launches first drone strike in Pakistan in 6 weeks

The US killed seven people in the first drone strike in Pakistan in six weeks. The attack took place in an area of Pakistan's Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan, and is rumored to have killed the deputy emir for the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan.

The CIA-operated, remotely piloted Predators or the more deadly Reapers fired a pair of missiles at a compound in the village of Chashma, which is just outside of Miramshah, the main town in the tribal agency, according to Reuters.

Seven people were killed in the strike and several more were wounded. It is unclear, however, if those killed were civilians or jihadists allied with the Taliban, al Qaeda, or other terrorist groups known to shelter in the area.

Unnamed Pakistani intelligence officials claimed that Waliur Rehman, the leader of the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan in South Waziristan and deputy to emir Hakeemullah Mehsud, was killed in the strike. Additionally, an aide known as Fakhar-ul-Islam is said to have been killed in the strike along with "two unknown Uzbek nationals," according to CNN.

The Pakistani government has not officially stated that Rehman was killed. The Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan has neither confirmed nor denied reports of his death.

US intelligence officials contacted by The Long War Journal would not confirm or deny that Rehman was killed, but did say they were aware of reports of his death. One official said that Rehman is on the CIA's kill list and has been targeted in the past.

The strike took place in an area of North Waziristan that is administered by the Haqqani Network, the al Qaeda-linked Taliban subgroup that operates in eastern Afghanistan and is based in North Waziristan.

Pakistan: 3 killed, 11 injured in Miranshah market blast

MIRANSHAH: A motorbike bomb close to party political offices killed three people and wounded 11 in Miranshah on the eve of the country's general election.

The bomb went off in the main bazaar of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan district, a security official said.

Witnesses and hospital officials said 11 people had been taken to Miranshah Civil Hospital, some of them in a serious condition.

Another official in the northwestern city of Peshawar confirmed the blast and the casualties.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Pakistan goes to the polls on Saturday to elect a new government, the first time in the country's turbulent history that one civilian administration has handed power to another through the ballot box.

But the campaign has been marred by violence, with more than 100 people killed in bombings and shootings in the month leading up to polling day.

The US killed four "militants" in a drone strike in the jihadist hub of Datta Khel in Pakistan's Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan. The strike today is the first reported by the US in Pakistan in 23 days.
The CIA-operated, remotely piloted Predators or the more deadly Reapers fired a pair of missiles at a compound in Datta Khel earlier today. Four "militants" were killed in the strike, Pakistani intelligence officials and a local shopkeeper told AFP. The compound that was targeted caught fire after the strike and the bodies of those killed were badly burned.
The exact target of the strike was not disclosed. No senior al Qaeda or Taliban commanders or operatives are reported to have been killed.
Today's strike is just the first this month. The last strike, which also occurred in Datta Khel, took place on March 21. In that airstrike, four "suspected militants and their harborers" were said to have been killed.
The US has launched just 12 drone strikes in Pakistan so far this year, according to data compiled by The Long War Journal. The number of strikes in Pakistan has decreased since the peak in 2010, when 117 such attacks were recorded. In 2011, 64 strikes were launched in Pakistan, and in 2012 there were 46 strikes.

"The drones kept hovering at the compound for a while and then one drone fired two missiles at the time of sunset," a local security official said.

Another security official in the northwestern city of Peshawar, which lies on the edge of the tribal region, confirmed the attack and the casualties.
An eyewitness said that the compound caught fire after the strike leaving all the bodies burnt.
"The bodies of the militants were severely burnt and it was hard to identify them," Haji Gul Badin, a local shopkeeper, said.

Death toll from Miramshah suicide attack reaches 22

MIRAMSHAH: The death toll from yesterday’s suicide attack on a security checkpost in North Waziristan’s Miramshah area reached 22 whereas the number wounded was reported as 35, military sources told Dawn.com.


A suicide bomber detonated an explosive-laden car near a mosque in Miramshah close to the residential quarters of Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) officials.

The FWO is engaged in several development projects in the area.

Most of the security personnel killed belonged to the Tochi scouts who were deployed for the security of FWO officials.

Earlier the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) had said in a statement that 17 security personnel had died in the attack.

Suicide attack leaves 17 soldiers dead in North Waziristan
According to Pakistani security officials, the number of soldiers killed from a car bomb attack on an army check post in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region has risen to 17.

The suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into Esha check post near Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan Agency, last night.

Intelligence officials say the vehicle exploded next to two tankers that were supplying fuel to troops in the North Waziristan tribal area. The blast set the tankers on fire and destroyed two residential army barracks.

In the meantime a military spokesman said, six security personnel were killed instantly and 11 more died later. Over a dozen security personnel were also injured following the blast.

No group claimed responsibility for the suicide attack. North Waziristan is the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in Pakistan.

The drone strike targeted two horse riders in Degan village of North Waziristan tribal region’s Datta Khel area. The targeted persons and their ride died on the spot.

Unnamed intelligence officials talking to Dawn.com’s Zahir Shah Sherazi confirmed that two militants were killed in the drone strike.

This was the first strike in March after a gap of at least one month, the two previous attacks occurred on Feb 6 and Feb 8 respectively.

Six militants killed in attack on Bannu police station

BANNU: Six militants believed to be suicide bombers were killed and one policeman was injured as police countered a huge attack by militants on the Maryan police station in Frontier Region Bannu in the wee hours of Thursday.

District Police Officer Nisar Tanoli said the attack on the police station had been successfully encountered and six militants were killed.

He said five suicide bombers had been killed by the security forces during the encounter while the sixth blew himself up when he was holed up inside the police station.

On the losses incurred by the police, he said only one policeman was injured in the attack and slight damage came to the police station’s walls but the law enforcement agencies had successfully foiled the attack.

The outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the suicide mission on the police station.

Speaking to Dawn.com, TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said the group’s fighters had attacked the police station but refused to disclose the number of attackers. Ehsan added all the attackers were “suicide bombers and would fight until martyrdom”.

He said the attack was launched to avenge the killings of TTP fighters in custody and whose bodies were thrown in Miramshah.

The TTP spokesman said the number of attackers was not as high as being claimed by security agencies but said they had inflicted huge losses on the police and security forces.

Official sources quoted intelligence officials as saying that the militants had fired rockets and stormed into the police station which led to an ensuing gun battle between security forces and the attackers.

During the gun-battle, security forces claimed to have killed at least four suicide bombers while the intelligence sources say the militants blew themselves up causing huge damage inside the police station.

The officials believe though exact number of the attackers is being ascertained, the initial reports said they might be five to six in number as the gun battle is still going on inside the police station.

Another security official claimed that two suicide bombers were blown to pieces as security forces on guard duty challenged and shot at them.

Reinforcements had  also been called in and both police and paramilitary troops had taken positions.

After the Bannu jail break incident last year, the militants had again launched a coordinated attack on another police station in the district, the bordering settled town of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province with North Waziristan Agency, believed to be a safe heaven for Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

Separately, militants launched a rocket attack on a security check post near the Gurgur Gas oil field but the militants managed to escape after the security forces repulsed the attack.

WASHINGTON: At least three people were killed when a US drone fired two missiles in North Waziristan on Wednesday, reported Express News.
Rescue services have left for the site, while sources say that the death toll may rise.

The White House on Tuesday defended drone strikes against al Qaeda suspects as legal, ethical and wise and insisted they complied with US law and the Constitution, even if they targeted Americans.

The White House defended President Barack Obama’s power to wage drone war after a Justice Department memo argued that Americans high up in al Qaeda could be lawfully killed, even if intelligence fails to show them plotting an attack.

“We conduct those strikes because they are necessary to mitigate ongoing actual threats, to stop plots, to prevent future attacks and, again, save American lives,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney.

“These strikes are legal, they are ethical, and they are wise.”

Blast leaves four soldiers injured in North Waziristan

MIRANSHAH: At least four security personnel were injured on Tuesday when an Army vehicle was targeted with a remote-controlled blast in North Waziristan tribal region.

Officials said the army vehicle was travelling from Spinwam to Mir Ali when it was targeted with a remote controlled improvised explosive device (IED). The officials added that the military vehicle was “badly damaged” in the blast and confirmed that four soldiers were injured in the explosion.

The injured were shifted to the hospital and security forces launched a search operation in the area soon after the explosion.

North Waziristan, which is close to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, is one of seven regions in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), governed by tribal laws.

An extremist insurgency led by the Pakistani Taliban plagues the region while the area is said to be infested with militants, including the al Qaeda, Taliban and other armed extremist organisations.

Bomb kills 14 Pakistani soldiers in North Waziristan

(Reuters) - A roadside bomb killed as many as 14 Pakistani soldiers in the northern border region of North Waziristan on Sunday, military officials said, a day after the Pakistani Taliban leader called for attacks on the military in the area to stop.

The explosion occurred on a road about 50 km (30 miles) south of the provincial capital of Miranshah. Twenty-one soldiers were wounded in the attack, senior army officials said.

On Saturday, Hakimullah Mehsud, the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, had circulated a leaflet calling for an end to the Taliban's infrequent attacks on Pakistani soldiers in North Waziristan.

Thousands of Pakistani soldiers are stationed in North Waziristan.

The ceasefire did not apply to the rest of the country, where there are often fierce clashes between the Taliban and security services.

The mountainous tribal region of North Waziristan along the Afghan border is a key stronghold of the Taliban and al-Qaeda. South Waziristan is under the control of the Wazir tribe, who have a peace deal with the Pakistani military.

It was unclear if the leaflet was related to rumours of splits in the movement. It called on local and foreign fighters to unite because "the enemy is trying to divide and rule us".

The Taliban have formed alliances with a number of other militant groups in North Waziristan who are violently opposed to the Pakistani state.

Some Taliban commanders are divided over whether the Pakistani state or NATO forces are their top target.

Those divisions were laid bare in November by an attempted suicide attack on Mullah Nazir, a top militant commander from the Wazir tribe in South Waziristan. He had signed a peace deal with the Pakistani army but supported attacks on NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The attack was widely believed to be the work of rival Taliban commanders, and the Wazir tribe ordered Hakimullah Mehsud's tribe out of their lands.

Mullah Nazir was killed in a drone strike this month and it is unclear if his successor will continue his policies, or what relationship the Wazir tribe will have with the Mehsud tribe.

Pakistani army officials have also told Reuters that there are tensions between Mehsud and his deputy. The two men recently appeared together in a video to deny the allegations.

The decision to halt attacks against the Pakistani army in North Waziristan could signal the Pakistani Taliban's intention to help the Afghan Taliban fight U.S.-led NATO forces in the neighbouring country, or focus more closely on attacking Western targets inside Pakistan.

Or it could be more specifically aimed at unifying local factions. Mehsud's statement specifically addressed both foreign fighters and local Taliban.

According to reports, the attack took place in Mir Ali area of North Waziristan Agency that borders war-stricken Afghanistan.

The reports said the unmanned aircraft targeted a house and fired four missiles. Identities of those killed were yet to be known.

AFP adds: Four missiles hit the house in Heso Khel village on the edge of Mir Ali town, around 35 kilometres (21 miles) east of Miranshah, the main town in the district of North Waziristan, a notorious stronghold of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants.

"A US drone fired four missiles. At least four militants have been killed, the compound was completely destroyed," a security official based in Miranshah told AFP.

A senior Pakistani security official in the northwestern city of Peshawar confirmed the attack and added that the identity of those killed was not yet known.

US drone attack kills 8 in North Waziristan

Several missiles fired from American drones slammed into a compound near the Afghan border in Pakistan early Tuesday, killing eight suspected militants, Pakistan officials said.

The compound was near the town of Mir Ali in the North Waziristan tribal area, said two intelligence officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

16 killed in U.S. drone strike in NW Pakistan on Sunday

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people were killed and seven others injured when U.S drones fired a number of missiles at different targets in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of South Waziristan on Sunday, reported local media Geo.

Three militant hideouts were also destroyed in the strike.

According to the local media reports, five U.S. drones were involved in the attack and an estimated eight to ten missiles were fired at different targets in the Babar Ghar area of South Waziristan, which is home to militants of the Hakim Ullah Mehsud group of the Pakistan Taliban and Haqqani network.

Fire erupted following the strikes on houses in the area, local media quoted residents in the area as saying, adding that many killed were burnt beyond recognition.

The identities of the killed and injured are not immediately known.

Local media believed that some high-profile militant leaders were targeted in the strike.

Sunday's U.S. drone strike is the third of its kind in Pakistan in the new year. On Thursday, in the wee hours, U.S drones fired four missiles at a target in South Waziristan, leaving at least ten militants killed, including an important Taliban commander Mullah Nazir. Later in the day, U.S. drones launched another strike in North Waziristan, killing at least four militants.

Following the strikes, thousands of tribesmen staged a rally in protest against the U.S. drone strike in Waziristan on Saturday and Pakistan foreign office spokesman also condemned the strikes.

However, the U.S. side has turned a deaf ear to the protests and condemnation and continues to press ahead with its drone strike in Pakistan's northwest tribal areas of North and South Waziristan along the border with Afghanistan.

U.S. insists that drone strike is an effective way to wipe out the militants hiding along the Pak-Afghan border, who often launch cross-border attacks on the U.S.-led NATO troops and Afghan forces in Afghanistan.

Drone Strike Kills Top Pakistani Militant

Pakistani security officials say U.S. drone strikes in tribal regions bordering Afghanistan have killed at least eight people, including Maulvi Nazir, a top militant commander in South Warziristan.

Officials said Thursday that Nazir, who was also known as Mullah Nazir, was one of several suspected militants killed during a strike in the village of Angoor Adda, late Wednesday.

They say at least one one drone attack occurred in North Waziristan. Dawn News says three people were killed.

Nazir was the main militant commander in South Waziristan. His fighters reportedly have been more interested in attacking U.S.-led troops in Afghanistan than Pakistan's security forces. His faction is said to be allied with other al-Qaida-linked militant groups.

Nazir had signed a peace accord with the Pakistani government in 2007. He was reported to have had a contentious relationship with the Pakistani Taliban, which has carried out attacks on Pakistani forces.

In November, Nazir was wounded in a suicide bombing that killed at least six people.

In November 2011, suspected U.S. drone strikes killed Nazir's deputy leader, Khan Mohammed, as well as a younger brother.

The U.S. drone strikes are unpopular in Pakistan.

Last year, President Barack Obama publicly acknowledged for the first time that the U.S. has conducted the strikes against militants in the country.

Mr. Obama defended the operations, saying they are used for "very precise, precision strikes" against al-Qaida.

17 Pakistani rebels killed near Afghan border

 ISLAMABAD (PAN): Seventeen Taliban fighters have been killed in two separate incidents of violence in northwest Pakistan, government officials said on Monday.

Eight insurgents were killed Sunday night during a security operation in the Terah valley of lawless tribal region, Khyber, near the Afghanistan border, an official in the political agent office told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The official who spoke on condition of anonymity added the operation came after 21 kidnapped paramilitary soldiers were executed by the rebels on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the BBC quoted local officials in North Waziristan as saying that unidentified gunmen killed nine fighters of Tahreek-i-Taliban Pakistan after their abduction in the North Waziristan.

MIRANSHAH: Bullet-ridden bodies of nine ‘Pakistani Taliban fighters’ were found on Monday dumped in the northwestern tribal North Waziristan region near the Afghan border, officials said.

The bodies were found on the side of the road in Peer Kaley village in North Waziristan, a stronghold of militant groups, 10 kilometres east of the district’s main town of Miranshah.

“Unidentified people threw away these nine bodies. No one knows who killed them,” a security official based in Miranshah told AFP.

Local residents confirmed that the bodies had been discovered and a second security official in Miranshah said the identity of the dead was yet not known.

But Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), told AFP that all nine were Taliban fighters and accused government security forces of killing them.

“We are proud of their martyrdom, soon we will take revenge for this killing,” he told AFP from an undisclosed location.

Officials on Sunday said they had found the bodies of 21 Levies soldiers who had been kidnapped by militants near the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Pakistan’s seven northwestern tribal districts are rife with homegrown insurgents and are said to be strongholds of Taliban and al Qaeda operatives.

Security officials said fighter jets on Monday bombed the Tirah valley in Khyber, another tribal district, killing at least eight militants.

Islamabad says more than 35,000 people have been killed as a result of terrorism in the country since the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

PESHAWAR: At least five people were killed Friday in a suspected US drone strike in North Waziristan tribal region, intelligence officials said.

According to the intelligence sources, the US predator targeted a compound in Gurbaz village of North Waziristan’s Shawal district, close to the border of South Waziristan agency, firing two missiles and killing five suspected militants inside.

Shawal district of North Waziristan region is considered a bastion of Taliban and al Qaeda-linked militants.

North Waziristan, which is close to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, is one of the seven regions in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), governed by tribal laws. An extremist insurgency led by the Pakistani Taliban plagues the region while the area is known to be infested with militants, including the al Qaeda, Taliban and other armed extremist organisations.

Attacks by unmanned US aircraft are deeply unpopular in Pakistan, which says they violate its sovereignty and fan anti-US sentiment, but US officials are said to believe the attacks are too important to give up.

PESHAWAR: At least three people were killed in a drone attack in the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan Agency (SWA).

Several people were also injured as the drone fired two missiles at a house located in the area.

Earlier on Friday, a US drone crashed in an uninhabited area in Wana, South Waziristan.

In a separate incident Local Taliban Commander Abbas Wazir along with two accomplices died in a suicide blast in Wana’s Rustam Bazar Vegetable Market. The blast took place inside Wazir’s office, causing damage to surrounding shops.

PESHAWAR: Four suspected militants were killed in a US drone strike Friday afternoon in North Waziristan regions, one of Pakistan’s restive northwestern tribal agencies near the Afghan border, intelligence and government sources said.

Although military and political administration officials refuse to comment on such strikes in the tribal areas, intelligence sources said the drone targeted a suspected militant facility located in the Hisukhel area of Mir Ali, about 25 kilometres east of Miramshah, the main town in North Waziristan agency.

The drones fired two missiles, destroying the house and killing four militants inside, said the sources on condition of anonymity. The identities of the dead and their affiliation to a militant group were unclear, they added.
Some sources said some foreigners were also among the dead but their nationalities could not be ascertained.

ISLAMABAD, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. unmanned aircraft, which was reportedly being used to target militants' hideouts, crashed in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region of South Waziristan, local media reported on Friday.

According to the reports, the pilotless plane crashed on Thursday night in the Wana district of South Waziristan, a restive tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Local media quoting official sources reported that the U.S. drone crashed apparently due to some technical fault.

U.S.-led NATO forces fighting in Afghanistan believed that Pakistan's bordering areas especially North Waziristan and South Waziristan are the safe haven for the militants who allegedly attack NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Pakistan, on a number of times, protested and expressed its reservations over such attacks, terming them the violation of its sovereignty but U.S. considered it an effective strategy to eliminate militants hiding in Pakistan's northwestern hilly area.

In 2012, U.S.-led NATO forces conducted around 38 drone attacks (counted on daily basis) in Pakistan, killing at least 269 people.

On Dec. 9, at least four people were killed when a U.S. drone fired four missiles at a house in Pakistan's northwest tribal area of North Waziristan.

Earlier on Dec. 1, U.S. drone attacked a suspected hideout in South Waziristan, the neighboring area of North Waziristan, killing at least four people including an al-Qaeda leader Abdul Rehman Azman, a Yemeni national believed to be one of the close aides of the former al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.

The strike took place in Tabbi village, 5km north of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan.

“US drones fired four missiles on a militant compound, killing three rebels,” a senior security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Sunday’s U.S. drone strike is the 38th of its kind (counted on daily basis) in Pakistan in 2012. At least 269 people have been killed in such strikes since this year.

Pakistan has long been opposing US drone attacks in its tribal belt that borders Afghanistan, where US and its ally forces are station.

Tabbi village, which is very close to the Afghan border, is said to be a hideout for militants belonging to several groups including those from Hafiz Gul Bahadur and the Haqqani network.

The al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani network, blamed for some of the deadliest attacks in Afghanistan, is one of the thorniest issues between Islamabad and Washington.

Washington has long demanded that Pakistan take action against the Haqqanis, whom the United States accused of attacking the US embassy in Kabul in September last year.

This comes as Abu Zaid was killed in the drone strike on a hideout in Pakistan’s North Waziristan, one of the tribal regions near the border with Afghanistan, early on Thursday, the sources said. Zaid had just moved to the hideout a few days ago, they said.

A United Stated drone attack in Pakistan’s tribal region of North Waziristan, killing at least four people and injuring several others, political sources said on Sunday.

According to the sources US unmanned drone fired four missiles at a compound in Miran Shah, capital city of North Waziristan, and killed at least four people. Several other sustained injuries in the US attack.

The sources further stated that the death toll may increase as several injured were stated to be in critical condition.
