3 police killed in insider attack in Faryab

KABUL (PAN): A policeman shot dead his three colleagues in northern Faryab province while two policemen and as many insurgents were killed in southern Helmand, officials said on Monday.
The incident in Faryab took place as a result of a dispute among the policemen manning a checkpoint on the Maimana-Herat highway, the provincial police chief said.

Brig. Gen. Nabi Jan Mullahkhel told Pajhwok Afghan News the attacker, Alauddin, joined the Taliban after killing three policemen and injuring the post commander.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said Alauddin -- a supporter of the insurgent movement -- had killed four policemen.

Separately, two fighters and as many policemen were killed on Monday when the Taliban attacked a patrol in the Wazirabad area of Khanshin district, said the governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak.

The attackers managed to flee, leaving behind the bodies of their associates, he said.

Militant blown up by own bomb in Faryab

MAIMANA (PAN): One suspected militant was killed and two others were wounded by a bomb they were planting beneath a bridge in northern Faryab province, an official said on Saturday.

The blast happened in the Chahar Shanba area of Ghormach district late on Friday night, the district’s administrative head, Niamatullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Maj. Mohammad Raza, spokesman for the 209th Shahin Military Corps, said security personnel, who frequently travel the Ghormach-Qesar road, were the target of the bomb.

In Several Joint Clearance Operations, Six Armed Taliban Killed

In past 24 hours, Afghan National Police conducted several joint clearance operations with the cooperation of Afghan National Army, NDS and Coalition Forces to clean some of the areas from terrorists and enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan.

The operations were conducted in Laghman, Faryab, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Paktiya and Helmand provinces, as a result six armed Taliban were killed, seven wounded and 13 other armed Taliban were arrested by Afghan National Security Forces.

Also, during these operations, Afghan National Police discovered and confiscated some amount of light and heavy rounds ammunitions and 22 anti-vehicle mines.

During the same 24 hour period, Afghan National Police discovered and defused 32 kilos of explosives in Nangarhar and Herat provinces.

3 rebels killed in Faryab offensive

MAIMANA (PAN): Three militants were killed during a security operation by Afghan security forces in northern Faryab province on Sunday, an official said.

Another three rebels were injured in the early morning operation in the Quram Qul district, police spokesman Syed Masoud Yaqubi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Two motorcycles, a rocket launcher and two pressure cookers filled with explosives were also seized during the offensive in Yousuf Mirzai and Alti Bolak areas, the district chief, Sultan Sanjar, said.

5 rebels killed, 3 surrender in Faryab

MAIMANA (PAN): Five insurgents were killed and a sixth captured alive during an operation in northern Faryab province, where three rebels joined the peace process in Pashtunkot district, officials said on Tuesday.

The operation was conducted in the Chakab area of the district, police spokesman Syed Masoud Yaqubi told Pajhwok Afghan News. One Kalashnikov was recovered from the detainee.

He said the guerrillas tried to attack Chakab area but security forces thwarted their attempt with the help of locals.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed inflicting causalities on security forces. However, he did not provide further details.

Separately, three members of the Qari Fazal Group joined the peace process as a result of efforts by tribal elders and handed over two Kalashnikovs and as many landmines to security forces in the same district.

Blast kills 4, injures 10 in Faryab food outlet

MAIMANA (PAN): Four people were killed and another 10 suffered wounds when a suspected bomb went off at a food outlet in the Khwaja Sabzposh district of northern Faryab province on Tuesday, officials said.

The explosive had been placed beneath a table and exploded at a time when a number of men were taking afternoon meals at the outlet, Faryab police chief Maj. Gen. Naji Jan Mullahkhel told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Two of the injured were said to be in a critical condition, he said, adding the outlet owner and an employee were detained for interrogation.

"The bomb was fitted in a pressure cooker that was placed beneath a table at the restaurant," the district chief, Abdullah Masoomi, said. A former local jihadi commander, Nadar, was among those injured, he said.

There was no claim of responsibility for the explosion.

Militants, policeman killed in Faryab clashes

MAIMANA (PAN): Four militants and a policeman were killed during clashes in northern Faryab province on Wednesday, official said.

During the gunbattles in Pashtunkot, Garziwal and Dawlatabad districts, three policemen, two militants and a civilian were wounded.

KABUL, Afghanistan – During an operation in Almar district, Faryab province, Nov. 30, an Afghan and coalition security force killed the senior Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leader, Shukrullah, and two other insurgents.

Shukrullah coordinated the Oct. 26 suicide attack in Meymaneh district, Faryab province that killed 41 Afghans. He also trained insurgents and provided improvised explosive device components to both IMU and Taliban fighters throughout Faryab and Sar-e Pul province.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a local Taliban leader and detained two suspected insurgents during an operation in Washer district, Helmand province, Dec. 1. The arrested leader was responsible for planning and coordinating improvised explosive device and direct fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He was also responsible for storing weapons and distributing them to insurgent fighters in the region.

In Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, an Afghan and coalition security force arrested a local Taliban leader and detained one suspected insurgent during an operation Dec. 1. The arrested leader carried out attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, and oversaw the emplacement of improvised explosive devices throughout eastern Panjwa’i district.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani facilitator in Pul-e ‘Alam district, Logar province, Dec. 1. The facilitator coordinated the movement of weapons and ammunition into Logar province and then distributed them to insurgent fighters in the region.

In Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, Dec. 1, an Afghan and coalition security force arrested two insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban facilitator. During the operation, the security force seized 500 pounds of narcotics, a number of Afghan National Army uniforms, and several weapons.

An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Haqqani leader in Lajah – Ahmad Khel district, Paktiya province, today. The Haqqani leader directs attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and is suspected of involvement in the kidnapping and execution of several Afghan National Army soldiers.

2 militants killed, 6 wounded in Faryab

MAIMANA (PAN): Two Taliban militants were killed and six others, including brother of a shadow governor, were wounded in northern Faryab province, a military official said on Monday.

The two-day operation was conducted in Mato and Chalgazi areas of Qaisar district, Gen. Noor Muhammad Hamid, the 209th Shaheen Corps commander, told Pajhwok Afghan.

A brother of Mullah Daud, the Taliban’s governor for Faryab, was among the detainees. Ten villages of the district were cleared of Taliban, the ANA commander said.

An inhabitant of Khwaja Ganti area, Syed Shafiq, said four militants, including a commander, were injured in the offensive. He had no information about ANA causalities.

Suicide bomb kills dozens at Afghan mosque

At least 37 people have been killed in a suicide bomb attack at a mosque in northern Afghanistan, officials say.

More than 40 people were wounded in the attack at the front of the mosque in Maymana, capital of Faryab province.

The provincial governor and police chief were said to be among those attending the prayers to mark the Eid al-Adha holidays, but they reportedly escaped without serious injury.

Civilians and police officers were among the dead, officials said.

Eye witnesses and officials said the suicide attacker approached the mosque and detonated his suicide vest after the Eid prayers had finished.

The BBC's Bilal Sarwary in Kabul says it is not clear now the attacker managed to get past at least four security checkpoints to target the mosque.

Deputy provincial governor Abdul Satar Barez told the AFP news agency that the attacker himself was wearing a police uniform.

"A suicide bomber targeted a mosque while people were leaving the mosque building at around 9 a.m. local time (0430 GMT) Friday after the Eid-ul-Adah prayers in Maimana city, killing 32 people and injuring 34 others," deputy to provincial governor Abdul Satar Bariz told Xinhua.

He said the number of the casualties could rise further as many of the wounded said to be in critical conditions.

The blast caused a plume of grey smoke to rise above the scene.

The wounded, along with the bodies of the dead, have been taken to provincial capital hospitals, the official said, adding that those in critical conditions will be transferred to the neighboring Balkh province.

The Muslims'biggest three-day festival of Eid-ul-Adha falls on Friday Oct. 26, it is also known as festival of sacrifice and is being celebrated worldwide on the 10th day of Duhl-Hijja, the last month of the Islamic year.

The attacker was wearing a police uniform when he blew himself up in the crowded Eid Gah mosque in the provincial capital of Faryab province, deputy provincial governor Abdul Satar Barez told AFP.

Faryab: 8 Civilians Killed in Roadside Mine Blast

At least eight Afghan civilians were killed in a roadside mine blast in northern Faryab province on Thursday morning, local officials said.


Seven other civilians were wounded in the blast.

The landmine exploded at 6:00am in Faryab's Pashtun Kot district when a police vehicle was passing by, provincial's police chief Abdul Khaliq Aqsai said.

It appears to have been remote-control detonated, but there were no Afghan police casualties in the blast, he said.

The injured taken in a nearby hospital in the province, he said.

Aqsai added that the "enemies of Afghanistan placed the mine to target local police."

No group, including the Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the blast.

According to local authorities in northern Faryab province, a number of Afghan civilians were killed or injured following a roadside bomb blast in this province.

The officials further added the incident took place after a civilian mini bus struck with a roadside bomb at Pashtun Kot area early Thursday morning.

Provincial security chief Abdul Khaliq Aqsai confirming the report said at least 15 Afghan civilians including women and children were killed following the incident.

Taliban destroy UN food trucks in Faryab

MAIMANA (PAN): Taliban fighters torched two trucks carrying food stuff for the World Food Programme (WFP) and killed one their drivers in the northern province of Faryab, officials said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in the Narin area between Qaisar and Almar districts of the province, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Khaliq Aqsai told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The two trucks loaded with food were set ablaze and a driver killed in the incident, he said.

The militants destroyed nearly 60 tonnes of wheat and ghee and Taliban also arrested two truck drivers, said Qaisar district chief Mohammad Siddique Hamidyar.

The trucks were transporting wheat, ghee, pulses and salt for 4,500 families in the Qaisar district, said a WFP staff, a UN agency, on condition of anonymity.

According to Aqsai, a woman was injured when a car passed by the burning trucks, but a driver Mohammad Aman said the woman died in the incident.

UNICEF official survives gun attack

KABUL CITY (PAN): The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) office head survived a gun attack that wounded another employee of the agency injured in northern Faryab province on Sunday, authorities said.

The incident took place in a health clinic in the Qaram Qul village, where UNICEF representatives -- involved in a polio vaccination drive -- came under attack from unidentified gunmen.

Sultan Sanjar, the town's administrative head, told Pajhwok Afghan that Dr. Fazal Ahmad, in charge of the UNICEF office, escaped unhurt in the attack. Another employee of the organisation was injured and their vehicle torched.

A provincial council member, who did not want to be named, accused local Taliban commander Qari Ahmad of plotting the gun attack.

Key Taliban leaders detained in Faryab province

According to local security officials in northern Faryab province, Afghan special forces detained two key Taliban members following a military operation in this province.

Gen. Ajmal media representative for Shahin Afghan national army brigade in Faryab province said, two key Taliban leaders were detained following a special operation by Afghan commandos.

He also added, the two Taliban commanders were recognized as Mullah Maqdoom and Azizullah and were detained along with one of their security guards.

Faryab: 2 protestors shot dead by police

MAIMANA (PAN): Two people were killed and another 25 injured during a clash with police after a protest over the killing of a seminary teacher by a joint Afghan-coalition force turned violent in northern Faryab province, officials said on Thursday.

More than 1,000 people took to the streets in Maimana, the provincial capital, against the overnight operation that resulted in the death of madraasa teacher Qayamuddin in Arab Khan Mina. Two of Qayamuddin’s brothers and a cousin were arrested by the joint force.

The ISAF media office in Kabul said the slain individual was responsible for military supplies to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and suicide attacks in northern provinces. It said the man was killed after he opened fire at the joint force from the rooftop of his house.

Carrying the victim’s coffin, the protestors marched on the governor's house, chanting slogans against the US and Afghan governments. They called for the immediate release of the detainees.

Witnesses said the protestors attacked police in Sanayee square, injuring two of them and seizing their weapons. One protestor was killed and 20 others injured in retaliatory fire from police, they said. Police also fired into the air to disperse the angry crowd.

Afghanistan Ulema council member Maulvi Nasir Ahmad said five protestors were killed and 30 others injured during the violence.

Public Health Director Dr. Abdul Ali Halim confirmed receiving 25 injured people, saying two of them died of serious injuries.

Hours before the demonstration, Governor Abdul Haq Shafaq said he had contacted officials in Kabul to discuss the release of the detainees with foreign troops.

The rally ended at around 4:30, but the protestors remained inside a mosque in the city, saying they would not offer funeral prayers for the victim until his killers were punished.

Apr.12., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Evening Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force killed Ammar Sahib, a senior Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan IMO facilitator, during an operation April 11 in Maimanah district, Faryab province.

Ammar Sahib is also known by the name Qyamuddin.

Ammar Sahib was called out of the building where he was known to be located. He retreated into the building and the Afghan soldiers pursued him up to the roof. When Ammar Sahib confronted them with an AK-47, he was killed.

Ammar Sahib provided weapons, ammunition, and equipment to IMU terrorists across northern Afghanistan for attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces.

He also recruited suicide bombers for attacks against Afghan officials and coordinated with IMU leaders in Pakistan for newly trained fighters.

In 2006, Ammar Sahib was arrested for a bombing in Faryab province that killed two Afghan civilians and two members of the local Provincial Reconstruction Team. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison but only served six months.

He was also a suspect in the April 4 suicide bombing in Maimanah City. That attack killed six Afghan civilians, three U.S. Soldiers, and wounded 26 others.

Ammar Sahib worked with former IMU leaders Makhdum Nusrat and Osmani Sahib, both also killed by Afghan and coalition security forces in Faryab province.

Two others were detained as a result of yesterday’s operation and are scheduled to be turned over to National Defense Security officials within the next 24 hour.

The IMU is a terrorist organization that is closely linked to Al-Qaida and the Taliban and operates in the northern region of Afghanistan among other countries in Central Asia.

A suicide attack on a NATO foot patrol has left 15 people dead in northern Afghanistan, according to local officials.

The attacker in Wednesday's late morning bombing targeted a foot patrol of Norwegian and US troops walking through a fruit market in Maymana, the capital of northwestern Faryab province.

"A suicide bomber targeted a group of foreign friends" near a park, provincial governor Abdul Haq Shafaq told the AFP news agency of the motorcycle-riding attacker.

Among the dead were four US soldiers, four Afghan police, an Afghan interpreter for the US soldiers and six Afghan civilians including two women and two children, local police sources told Al Jazeera.

Another 30 Afghan civilians and four US soldiers were wounded in the attack.

An on-duty doctor at the Afghan-Turk Hospital in the provincial capital told Afghan media that 21 injured, including Afghans and foreigners, were rushed to the hospital.

The doctor told the Pajhwok Afghan news agency that most of the injured at the hospital were in critical condition.

The NATO forces visited the police headquarters in Faryab before heading to a nearby park to conduct interviews, Shafaq said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The northwestern province, with a majority Turkmen population, shares a border with neighbouring Turkmenistan.

Though Faryab has been one of the more peaceful of Afghanistan's 34 provinces, clashes between government and Taliban forces rendered 12,000 villagers from the Qaysar district internally displaced last year.

Norway contributes about 400 soldiers to the 130,000-strong NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

14 militants killed in Afghan police operations

Afghan interior ministry officials following a press release on on Wednesday announced at least 14 armed militants were killed and 9 others were detained following military operations during the past 24 hours.

The source further added, the militants were killed and detained during 8 separate military operations conducted by Afghan national police forces across the country.

The operations were conducted by Afghan police in conjunction with the Afghan army, Afghan intelligence and NATO-led international coalition security forces at Laghman, Badakshan, Kandahar, Maidan Wardak, Logar, Khost, Paktika, Paktia and Uruzgan provinces of Afghanistan, the statement added.

Afghan security forces also seized some weapons and explosives including 3 AK-47 rifles along with its ammunitions, 2 rocket propelled grenade launchers, 2 heavy machine guns, 10 landmines, 11 hand grenades and a vehicle being used by militants.

Anti-government armed militant groups yet to comment regarding the operations.

In the meantime, local security officials in northern Faryab province announced at least 7 armed insurgents were killed and 7 others were detained in this province.

An Afghan army official said, the militants were killed and detained during an operation conducted by Afghan special forces and foreign troops at Khwaja Sabzposh district last night.

He also added, Afghan security force seized 8 rifles and some weapons and explosives including home made bombs during the operation.

This comes a number of night raids were carried out by Afghan and foreign troops in northern Faryab province during the past recent weeks. According to local officials more than 20 militants were killed and injured during the operations. In the meantime a group of 10 militants on Tuesday surrendered to Afghan and joined peace process in this province.

Provincial governor spokesman Javid Bidar said, the commander of the militants group Qari Rahmatullah surrendered to Afghan government along with his fighers. He was carrying out insrugency attacks against the Afghan government during the past few years.
