3 police killed in insider attack in Faryab

KABUL (PAN): A policeman shot dead his three colleagues in northern Faryab province while two policemen and as many insurgents were killed in southern Helmand, officials said on Monday.
The incident in Faryab took place as a result of a dispute among the policemen manning a checkpoint on the Maimana-Herat highway, the provincial police chief said.

Brig. Gen. Nabi Jan Mullahkhel told Pajhwok Afghan News the attacker, Alauddin, joined the Taliban after killing three policemen and injuring the post commander.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said Alauddin -- a supporter of the insurgent movement -- had killed four policemen.

Separately, two fighters and as many policemen were killed on Monday when the Taliban attacked a patrol in the Wazirabad area of Khanshin district, said the governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak.

The attackers managed to flee, leaving behind the bodies of their associates, he said.

Gunmen kill seven in attack on Pakistan military camp

(Reuters) - Gunmen opened fire on a military encampment in eastern Pakistan on Monday, killing six soldiers and a policeman, the military said in a statement.

"A small rescue party had camped on the bank of (a) river to search for the body of a drowned/missing pilot," the statement said.

"Today, early morning, a few unknown assailants opened fire on the rescue party, which resulted in the shahadat (martyrdom) of six security forces personnnel."

The gunmen fled the scene after the shooting.

The attack took place near the town of Wazirabad, about 100 km (60 miles) north of the eastern city of Lahore, capital of the central Punjab province.

Such attacks are more common in northwest Pakistan, home to several militant groups, including the Taliban, but rare in Punjab. Some extremist groups are based in the southern part of the province, but are not known to attack security forces.

Pakistani security officials said they had started an investigation. No group had claimed responsibility.

"There are criminal groups active in the area, they could be involved. Or it could be militants, which could be a serious development," a senior Pakistani security official told Reuters. "We are not ruling anything out."
