Heavy clashes reported in Nuristan province of Afghanistan

According to local authorities in eastern Nuristan province of Afghanistan, heavy clashes between Afghan security forces and anti-government armed militants started in this province early Tuesday morning.

The officials further added the clashes started in Barg-e-Matal district and the militants are still resisting Afghan security forces.

Provincial security chief Ghulamullah Nuristani said militants started attacking Afghan security forces in cooperation with the Pakistani military.

Mr. Nuristani further added militants are fighting Afghan security forces and are armed with modern and heavy military equipments.

He said an Afghan child has been killed following the clashes and the militatns have also suffered casualties however he did not disclose exact details of the militants casualties.

Taliban militants group yet to comment regarding the report.

Pakistan fire 80 missiles in eastern Kunar province

Local authorities in eastern Afghanistan announced Pakistani military forces fired at least 80 missiles in eastern Kunar province of Afghanistan during the past two days in the latest wave of cross-border incursion.

Kunar provincial governor spokesman Wasifullah Wasifi said at least 3 Afghan civilians were injured following the Pakistani military shelling.

Mr. Wasifi further added at least 43 missiles were fired on Sunday while 37 more missiles were fired on Monday in Dangam district of eastern Kunar province.

This comes as local officials in eastern Afghanistan earlier said hundreds of missiles and heavy shells were fired in eastern bordering regions of Afghanistan with Pakistan during the past one year.

The officials further added several Afghan civilians were killed or injured following the attacks besides forcing the local residents to flee from their homes.

Local residents in Kunar province have launched protests against the cross-border incursions and a number of political groups have criticized the Afghan government in this regard.

Afghan parliament members also dismissed interior and defense ministers for being failed to prevent the cross-border shelling by Pakistani military forces.

Afghan government officials have repeatedly warned to file a complain against the cross-border shelling with the UN Security Council however it seems that the cross-border incursion still continues in eastern Afghanistan.

Taliban attack Pakistan army post, kill 9 troops

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani military official says Taliban militants attacked an army post near the Afghan border, killing nine soldiers.

The official says several other soldiers were wounded in the attack in the South Waziristan tribal area. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, claimed they killed 12 soldiers and beheaded some of them.

The differing accounts could not be independently verified.

South Waziristan was once the main stronghold for the Pakistani Taliban. The military launched a large offensive against militants there in 2009, but insurgents still operate in the area and periodically stage attacks.

Pakistan military attack Afghan check posts in Kunar

According to local security officials in eastern Kunar province, Pakistani military attacked Afghan security check posts in central Kunar province early Tuesday morning.

The officials further added the incident took place around 4:00 am local time after Pakistani military forces attacked border security check posts in Dangam district.

Gen. Mohammad Ayoub Hussain Khel chief of the Afghan police forces in eastern zone said Pakistani military started direct shelling over security check posts.

Gen. Hussain Khel further added he visited the area along with a number of the Afghan border protection police forces to respond the cross-border shelling by Pakistan military.

He did not disclose further information regarding the exact number of casualties as a result of the clashes.

In the meantime Mohammad Edris Momand a spokesman for Afghan border protection police forces in the east said the clashes started early Tuesday morning and continued for almost 4 hours.

He also said local residents also went to the area to support Afghan security forces.

Six Pakistani Troops Said Killed In Cross-Border Attack By Taliban

Pakistani officials say that more than 100 Taliban fighters crossed over from Afghanistan and attacked three Pakistani military posts on June 24, killing at least six soldiers.

Military officials say at least 11 of the attackers were also killed in the firefight, which lasted 40 minutes in the Soni Darr area of Upper Dir district.

A Taliban spokesman, Saruj ul-Haq of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Malakand area, took credit for the attack in a phone call to Radio Mashaal.

The attacks were the latest in a series of cross-border assaults from regions in eastern Afghanistan where U.S. troops began pulling out last year.

Militant hideouts pounded in Orakzai; 21 killed

KHADEZAI – Pakistani fighter jets bombed four militant hideouts in the Khadezai and Mamozai areas of the northwestern Orakzai tribal region, near the Afghanistan border, killing 21 militants and wounding 23 military officials said.    

There was no way to independently confirm the death toll. Militants often dispute official death figures.
Orakzai is one of seven ethnic Pashtun tribal areas where the Pakistani military has carried out offensives to root out insurgent groups.

Taliban execute 10 more Pakistani troops

The Taliban executed 10 more paramilitary troops from Pakistan's Frontier Corps. From the BBC:

At least 10 paramilitary troops have been found shot dead in a volatile tribal area of north-west Pakistan, security officials say. The men were abducted last month from the Orakzai region after militants attacked a military post.
Local officials say the bullet-riddled bodies of the men were found in a ravine close to the town of Dabori. It is unclear when they were killed....
The soldiers, who were members of Pakistan's paramilitary Frontier Corps, had been missing since 21 December when 23 soldiers were attacked by up to 100 heavily-armed militants, a security official quoted by the AFP news agency said.

Last week, the Taliban executed 15 Frontier Corps troops after overrunning a fort in the settled district of Tank. The bodies were dumped in Miramshah, a stronghold of the Haqqani Network in North Waziristan [see LWJ report, Pakistani Taliban execute 15 Frontier Corps troops]. The Taliban have said they will soon release video of the execution.
While the Pakistani military and government have repeatedly claimed that the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan has been ejected from tribal agencies such as Arakzai, that the terror group's top two leaders are at each other's throats, and that the group is divided and demoralized, the group continues to demonstrate that it can mass forces in the tribal areas as well as in the neighboring settled districts of the northwest.

Pakistan Taliban free 17 kidnapped youths from Bajaur

The Taliban have freed 17 young men from north-west Pakistan who they seized four months ago, officials say.

About 30 youths were abducted in early September after they inadvertently strayed across the Afghan border.
Several managed to escape over the past few months. At least eight more are still being held by the militants, an official in Bajaur tribal area said.
The Taliban said they kidnapped members of the Mamund tribe because it supported the Pakistani government.
Over the past few years, influential members of the Mamund tribe have sided with the Pakistani military and raised private militias to fight the Taliban. The Pakistani government says the co-operation has helped clear the area of Taliban influence.
The youths, reportedly ranging in age from 10 to about 30 years old, were at a picnic to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid and had mistakenly crossed the border from Bajaur to take a bath in a spring, when the militants seized them.
