KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a senior Taliban leader and eight other insurgents during an operation in Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province, today.

The senior leader oversees a direct action cell of fighters responsible for a series of attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Nad ‘Ali and Marjeh districts. He is also responsible for procuring weapons for use in insurgent attacks and managing Taliban personnel actions in his area of operations.

The security force also seized two AK-47s and one rifle as a result of the operation.

The security force also seized a pistol as a result of the operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban improvised explosive device cell leader and one other insurgent during an operation in Zharay district, Kandahar province, today. The leader coordinates IED activity targeting Afghan and coalition forces in Zharay district. He also helps facilitate the movement of weapons to local Taliban groups.

An Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents during an operation in search of a senior Haqqani leader in Sayyid Karam district, Paktiya province, yesterday. The leader is directly involved with improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He coordinates insurgent movement and attacks and provides information to senior Haqqani leaders. The leader facilitates the movement of IEDs, weapons and money into the local area.

50 Insurgents Including Three Taliban Leaders Killed in Helmand Clashes

Around 50 insurgents including three Taliban leaders were killed during the three-day clash at Sangin district in southern Helmand province, local officials said on Wednesday. 18 other insurgents were injured in the clash.

The Governor of Southern Helmand province Mohammad Naeem at a press conference in the capital of the province Lashkargah, said that the clash started on Monday in Sangin district and is still continuing in certain parts of the district.

"The insurgents form their forces by recruiting people from everywhere, many insurgents are from Sangin and some are even taken in from the adjoining provinces like Kandahar and Helmand. This is not all; good numbers of foreigners are also taken into the insurgent's force. The preliminary assessments showed that there were several insurgents involved in the clash," the Governor told reporters.

Five security forces were killed and nine others injured in the clash, according to the Governor.

The Governor added that foreign security forces are not involved in the clash, only Afghan security forces are fighting against the insurgent groups.

He said that the clash had started on Monday when many insurgents gathered in the Sangin district to plan their insurgency activities both in Helmand and Kandahar provinces.

Currently, the clashes are continuing in 13 parts of the district.

The Governor has asked all security organizations to help them clean the district of these insurgents.

26 attackers killed in Sangin battle

LASHKARGAH (PAN): As many as 26 Taliban insurgents and four policemen were killed during fierce gun-battles entering a second day on Tuesday in southern Helmand province, an official said.

Hundreds of Taliban fighters, including foreigners, launched cooperated attacks on police posts in the Sangin district around 5am on Monday, the governor's spokesman said.

Omar Zwak said the clashes that involved around 1,000 militants were still ongoing in various parts of the town. A number of attackers and five policemen were injured.

He said Arab, Chechen, Iranian and Pakistani insurgents were fighting alongside the Afghan Taliban using both heavy and light weapons.

He said the insurgents launched cooperated attacks on security posts in Sarwan Qala, upper and lower Qalawal, Mian Rodi, Fatehzai and other areas. Zwak said the security forces were putting up stiff resistance and they had no support from foreign troops.

However, the US-led coalition said the Taliban force totaled 80 to 100 fighters and managed to launch only sporadic attacks on outlying police posts in the district.

Ten groups of between 8 and 10 Taliban fighters were “doing drive-by shootings against five police checkpoints,” said Col. Thomas Collins, a coalition spokesman. “None of the checkpoints were overrun."

A Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi claimed nearly a dozen policemen were killed and a dozen more injured and two police vehicles destroyed in the attacks.

Our reporting shows there were about 10 groups of four to five fighters each doing drive-by shootings against five police checkpoints. Pakistani and Chechen rebels attack police check post in Helmand

At least 23 Taliban militants including Pakistani and Chechen fighters were killed after attacking a police check post in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan.

Local officials in Helmand province said the incident took place in Sangin district, leaving four Afghan police officers dead.

Provincial governor spokesman Omar Zwak said the attack was carried out jointly by Pakistani and Chechen militants.

He said clashes started late Monday and the two sides are still exchanging fire.

In the meantime Taliban militants group claimed around 10 police officers along with thier commander were killed.

This comes as Afghan defense ministry on Monday announced that hundreds of Pakistani and foreign militants were deployed to Afghanistan to carry out attacks in Afghanistan.

Defense ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said several religious Madrasas teaching Taliban militants were closed and the fighters were deployed in Afghanistan.

The senior leader oversees the operations of multiple insurgent cells in Baghlan-e Jadid district. He and his subordinates are responsible for numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also collects illegal taxes from local civilians, facilitates the movement of weapons and military equipment for use in operations, and interfaces with senior insurgent leadership in order to pass operational information to his fighters.

Following the engagement two additional insurgents were killed by their own IED as they were traveling back toward the location of the first IED.

Three Georgian Troops Killed in Afghanistan - R.I.P. - Jr.Sgt.Davitadze, Cpl.Kvitsinadze, Cpl.Shanava

Three Georgian servicemen were killed after a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden truck into their base in the Helmand province, accompanied with an attack by a group of insurgents, Defense Minister, Irakli Alasania, said late on Monday evening.

Several Georgian soldiers were wounded.

Alasania, however, declined “at this stage” to specify number of those wounded in this attack, which he described as “the largest” one on the Georgian troops since deployment in Afghanistan in late 2009.

This recent incident brings total death toll of the Georgian soldiers in the ISAF mission to 22.

Corporal Alexander Kvitsinadze; junior sergeant Zviad Davitadze and corporal Vladimer Shanava from the 42nd battalion of the fourth infantry brigade died in the attack.

Defense Minister Alasania, who visited Georgian troops in Afghanistan earlier this month, said that “the combined attack”, involving a suicide truck bomber and “a group of insurgents”, started at 4:17pm on May 13.

“The Georgian soldiers repelled the attack and destroyed all the terrorists involved in the attack,” Alasania said. “I want to note Georgian troops' courage and heroism; this very courage and soldiers’ professionalism helped to evade even bigger tragedy.”

Georgia has almost doubled its contribution to the ISAF mission to over 1,560 last autumn.

Georgia joined ISAF mission in November 2009 with deployment of about 170 soldiers in Kabul. In April, 2010 Georgia increased its contribution by sending a battalion to the Helmand province and in October, 2012 Georgia added one more battalion.

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan Uniformed Police quick reaction force killed three insurgents and wounded two others in Andar district, Ghazni province, yesterday.

The district chief of police dispatched the QRF after two Afghan Local Police contacted the District Operation Coordination Center for assistance. The two ALP members were surrounded and receiving small arms fire from 10 insurgents when the AUP arrived on location. Five insurgents retreated from the exchange.

This marks the second instance in less than 48 hours where multiple Afghan Security Force elements, working through the District OCC, combined efforts to defeat Taliban attacks against Afghan Local Police positions, a growing positive trend within the ANSF operational framework.

Explosion kill district attorney chief in Helmand

According to local authorities in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan, district attorney chief for Marjah was killed following an improvised explosive device explosion.

Provincial governor spokesman Omar Zwak confirming the report said Marjah district attorney chief, Lal Mohammad was killed early Sunday morning after his vehicle struck with a roadside bomb.

Mr. Zwak further added the incident took place around 7am local time while Lal Mohammad was on his way towards his work place.

No group has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident however Taliban militants frequently use improvised explosive device as the weapon of their choice to target Afghan and coalition security forces and Afghan government officials.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the group announced its summer offensive late last month, and vowed to carry out attacks against the security forces, government officials and diplomatic institutions across the country.

Responding to an attack on the Afghan Local Police, an Afghan Security Forces quick reaction force killed 10 insurgents in Qara Bagh district, Ghazni province, May 10. The Afghan force engaged more than 30 dismounted insurgents armed with small arms and RPGs shortly after being dispatched by the district Operation Coordination Center. Following the engagement the security force recovered three motorcycles, two AK-47 rifles and one RPG.

Taliban blow up power pylons

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Taliban militants have blown up three power pylons in the Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province, disrupting electricity supply to several areas, an official said on Thursday.

The attacks took place late on Wednesday during an anti-Pakistani protest that turned violent after some insurgents opened fire at security personnel. The rebels and their supporters later bombed the pylons.

Javed Faisal, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants also cut power cable between the Kajaki district of Helmand province and Kandahar.

He added the fighters had also snatched tools from engineers, causing power supply disruption in Kandahar City. As a result, residents were diesel power generators, the spokesman concluded.

3 civilians dead, 5 wounded in Helmand bombing

LASHKARGAH (PAN): Eight civilians were killed and wounded when the vehicle they were travelling in struck a roadside bomb in southern Helmand province on Wednesday, an official said.

The explosion left three people dead and five others wounded in the Nahr-i-Saraj area of Greshk district at about 8am, the provincial police coordinator told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Col. Ismail Hotak said the victims were on their way to Lashkargah, the provincial capital. The injured were evacuated to the Emergency Hospital, he said, without commenting on their condition.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested three insurgents during an operation in search of a high-ranking Haqqani leader in Ziruk district, Paktika province, today. The ranking Haqqani leader directs attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, to include attacks against government facilities in multiple provinces throughout Afghanistan, including Khost and Kabul. The security force also seized ammunition as a result of the operation.

Provincial Response Company Logar, enabled by coalition forces, detained four insurgents and discovered a cache of weapons and explosives-making materials while conducting a cordon and search operation in the village of Padkhvab-e Shana, Pul-e District, Logar Province, yesterday. The cache consisted of 15 Chinese 107 mm Rockets, one 82 mm recoilless rifle round and two 50 kg bags of 46 percent fertilizer. All seized items were destroyed on location.

Afghan police kill 6 Taliban fighters in southern town

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Units of Afghan police ambushed and killed six armed Taliban militants in the southern Helmand province 555 km south of Kabul on Saturday, a local official confirmed.

"Personnel of police laid ambush against a group of armed Taliban fighters in Sistani area of Marja district at noon time today killing six rebels on the spot," provincial administration spokesman Omar Zawak told Xinhua.

There were no casualties on police, he contended. Taliban outfit has yet to make comment.

He was a key liaison and trainer to local insurgent commanders in Waygal district and led efforts to establish a permanent foreign fighter presence in the area.

Commandos from the 1st Special Operations Kandak, enabled by coalition forces, arrested a mid-level Taliban leader during an operation in Chaparhar district, Nangarhar province yesterday. This mid-level Taliban leader is involved in the narcotics trade and is responsible for improvised explosives device attacks against coalition forces and GIRoA officials throughout the region.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Haqqani facilitator during an operation in Gurbuz district, Khost province, today. The facilitator is responsible for trafficking weapons used in insurgent attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in districts throughout Khost province. He supplies multiple cells of Haqqani fighters. The security force also seized three AK-47s, one pistol, 10 magazines and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition as a result of the operation.

Helmand High Peace Council Chief Killed in Taliban Attack

The provincial chief of High Peace Council Moalem Shah Wali Khan and two of his bodyguards were killed in a Taliban ambush in southern Helmand province early Wednesday, local officials said.

Four other of his bodyguards were injured in the attack.

The incident took place about 10:00am in Yakhcha area of Gereshk district while, Moalam Shah Wali Khan was travelling in the district to join in a meeting with the residents to discuss about the fifth phase of security transition, provincial governor's spokesman Mohammad Omar Zhuwak said.

"The Taliban attacked their vehicles on the way, killing Shah Wali Khan and two of his bodyguards and injuring four other bodyguards," Zhuwak said.

The provincial deputy governor Masoud Bakhtawar was also with them [Shah Wali Khan], but he survived from the attack, he said.

Moalem Shah Wali Khan was also a tribal elder in Nawa district of the province and recently worked as the provincial chief of High Peace council.

However, no group including the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Gereskh district is considered an insecure areas in the province where insurgents frequently target local security forces.
