BAGHDAD, May 23 (Xinhua) -- A total of five people were killed, including three Lebanese Shiite pilgrims, and 29 others injured in separate gunfire and bomb attacks in eastern and central Iraq on Wednesday, the police said.
The deadliest attack occurred in Iraq's western province of Anbar when a roadside bomb struck a bus carrying Lebanese Shiite pilgrims in the provincial capital city of
Ramadi, some 110 km west of Baghdad, killing three pilgrims and wounding seven others, a source from Anbar's operations command told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The bus came from the Syrian border in western Iraq and headed to the Shiite holy sites in central the country, the source said.
In Iraq's eastern province of
Diyala, gunmen with their assault rifles opened fire against a bus carrying construction workers in an area located some 90 km of Baghdad, killing two workers aboard and injuring six others, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
In a separate incident, four policemen were wounded when gunmen attacked their patrol in an intersection in northeastern of Diyala 's capital city of
Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, the source said.
Also in the province, a civilian was wounded when a roadside bomb went off near his house in a town some 17 km northwest of Baquba, the source added.
Meanwhile, seven people were wounded when a booby-trapped car detonated at a marketplace in the city of
Samarra, some 110 km north of Baghdad, a local police source anonymously told Xinhua.
In addition, a roadside bomb detonated in al-Qadisiyah district in western Baghdad, wounding four civilians, an Interior Ministry source anonymously told Xinhua.
Violence is still common in the Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease since its peak in 2006 and 2007 when the country was engulfed in sectarian killings.
