U.S. Condemns Killing Of Aid Worker In Afghanistan

The U.S. State Department has condemned a suicide attack in eastern Afghanistan's Konar Province that killed an employee from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), three soldiers from the International Security Assistance Force, and one Afghan civilian.

In a statement, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said USAID worker Ragaei Abdelfattah's "work over the last year was critical to our efforts to support Afghanistan's political, economic, and security transitions and was an example of the highest standards of service."

Two men wearing suicide vests approached Abdelfattah and the others and detonated their explosives on August 8.

Clinton mentioned Abdelfattah was "so committed" to his work in Afghanistan that he had already volunteered to serve a second year there.

ADEN, Yemen, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- At least three al-Qaida members were killed Thursday afternoon when warplanes bombed their training camp in Yemen's southern province of Abyan, an army officer told Xinhua.

More than three air strikes hit an abandoned al-Qaida training camp in Mahfad town in Abyan province, leaving at least three members of the terrorist group killed and five others injured, the local army officer said on condition of anonymity.

"Warplanes of the Yemeni air forces dropped about six bombs on the al-Qaida base... Initial reports show that three terrorists were killed," the army officer said.

The Yemeni military said earlier in the day that its troops have arrested four al-Qaida militants while they were heading to neighboring Aden province to carry out terror attacks there.

The captured al-Qaida militants had been taken to the 25th Mechanized Army Brigade for further investigation, the country's Defense Ministry said in a brief text message obtained by Xinhua.

Backed by the United States and oil-rich Saudi Arabia, the Yemeni government waged a month-long intensive offensive in May against hundreds of al-Qaida militants, recapturing several villages and towns seized by the insurgents in the southern Abyan province last year.

Local military and anti-terrorism experts said that the Yemen- based al-Qaida branch still posed threat to the impoverished Arab country despite being driven out of its main southern bastions by the U.S.-backed military offensive in June.

Bomb kills 8 Somali soldiers in Mogadishu: officials

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - At least eight Somali government troops were killed when a remote-controlled bomb hit their vehicle in Mogadishu, officials said on Thursday, highlighting lingering security risks less than two weeks before the U.N.-backed government's mandate ends.

Somalia's Islamist al Shabaab group claimed responsibility for the attack on Wednesday evening.

Government troops and African Union peacekeepers say they have tightened security before a presidential election on August 20 when the transitional government will be dissolved.

A combined force including Kenyan, Burundian, Ethiopian and Djiboutian troops is planning an offensive on Kismayu, Somalia's second biggest city and a hub for al Shabaab, before then.

Residents said the military vehicle had been destroyed by a roadside bomb in the Huriwaa district of northern Mogadishu.

"A bomb killed eight soldiers and completely destroyed their pickup. Only two, including the driver, survived with injuries," Mohamed Abdikadir, a senior police officer, told Reuters.

Although Somali troops and peacekeepers of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) drove al Shabaab fighters from most of Mogadishu in August 2011, the latest bombing shows the militants can still stage deadly attacks in the capital.

Al Shabaab has threatened more attacks as Somalia's three top government officials and a dozen other politicians campaign for the presidency. Last week the government foiled two would-be suicide bombers who targeted a conference hall where delegates approved a draft constitution.

"We destroyed the government pickup yesterday," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, military spokesman for al Shabaab, told Reuters. "AMISOM and government forces will never sleep or relax. More explosions await them."

On Tuesday, Uganda's military, which provides the bulk of peacekeeping force, said it had deployed an air force contingent to reinforce the troops in their fight against al Shabaab.

According to NATO officials an Afghan National Army soldier was killed by coalition forces while he was trying to gun down a group of international troops in eastern Afghaistan on Thursday.

A spokesman for NATO confirming the report said the incident took place outside a “coordination center” for Afghan and international forces in Laghman province.

German Lt. Col. Hagen Messer says no one was killed in the incident.

Messer declined to give more details, saying only that NATO and Afghan forces need to investigate the attack. He also declined to say if anyone was wounded.

The incident was the latest in a growing number of the so-called “green-on-blue” attacks in which Afghan soldiers or police have turned on their international colleagues. Some of the attackers have been insurgent infiltrators, while others have been trying to settle personal vendettas.

In the meantime an Australian soldier was shot and injured during a gun fight with insurgents in southern Uruzgan province.

The soldier, who was taking part in a joint Afghan National Security Forces and special forces operation in Uruzgan province, was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Tarin Kowt.

“The soldier received a gunshot wound to the lower left leg when the combined-force element came under small-arms fire from insurgents,” defence said in a statement today.

6 injured in al-Qaida car bombing in Yemen

Map by Evan Centanni - www.polgeonow.com
ADEN, Yemen, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- At least six pro-government tribesmen were injured on Wednesday evening when a booby-trapped car exploded near a tribal checkpoint in Yemen's southern province of Abyan, a military official told Xinhua.

An al-Qaida member detonated an explosive-laden vehicle at a tribal checkpoint in the main entrance of Jaar town in Abyan province, injuring at least six pro-government tribesmen, the local government official said on condition of anonymity.

"The al-Qaida bomber struck a checkpoint, killing himself only at the scene and injuring six tribal fighters, some of whom in critical condition," the government official said.

"The bomber was aiming to target Abdullateef al-Sayed, the leader of anti-al-Qaida militiamen, but unfortunately he failed to reach there," he added.

Leaders of the pro-government tribesmen have recently become targets of suicide bombings by al-Qaida militants who were forced to flee Abyan in June following fierce battles that left hundreds of people killed two months ago.

Earlier this week, an al-Qaida suicide bomber blew himself up during a funeral attended by social figures and tribal chiefs in Jaar town, killing at least 46 people and injuring 48 others, according to the Defense Ministry.

Backed by the United States and top world oil exporter Saudi Arabia, the Yemeni government waged a month-long intensive offensive in May against hundreds of al-Qaida militants, recapturing several villages and towns seized by the insurgents in the southern Abyan province last year.

Local military and anti-terrorism experts said that the Yemen- based al-Qaida branch is still a major threat to the impoverished Arab country despite being driven out of its main southern bastions by the U.S.-backed military offensive in June.

Insurgent’s plan to emplace IED backfires

KAJUR DISTRICT, Afghanistan – Mullah Abdullah, an insurgent in Kajur district, attempted to transport and plant an improvised explosive device when it detonated, killing one child and himself, and severely injuring another child, July 28.

Abdullah used local children and their sheep to conceal his movements and was attempting to plant the IED near a forklift used by coalition special operations forces.

“There is a significant IED threat on our drop zone, especially in the vicinity of the forklift,” said a special operations forces team leader.

A special operations forces team in the area witnessed the explosion, approximately 400 meters north of their location, at around 4:30 pm. Approximately one hour later, a crowd of individuals approached the special operations forces element seeking medical aid for two children, ages 10 and 12, who had sustained severe wounds.

The special operations forces team immediately began the medical care of the children, while requesting a medical evacuation. Prior to the arrival of the medical air team, one of the boys died. Special operations forces medics stabilized the other boy and airlifted him with his father for further medical treatment.

Following this incident, the special operations forces team conducted a local shura to explain to the villagers the results of the insurgents’ actions. Although in shock, the father of the deceased child was very grateful for the special operations forces team and the attempt to save his son.

“There is something selfish and inherently wrong with using village children to obscure the insurgents’ activities that would have likely victimized others within their community,” said the special operations Task Force South executive officer. “It is activities like these that Afghan security forces and coalition forces are painstakingly trying to prevent.”

WEATHERFORD (CBS 11 NEWS) – Tim Kisor stares blankly at times. He’ll tell you all he’s thinking about his brother Clayton Beauchamp.

On Tuesday, the Navy Corpsman’s family found out that he was killed after an IED went off in Afghanistan. It was the sailor’s first tour of duty.

He was working as a medic. His family says all he wanted to do after high school was to join the Navy. He wanted to follow his big brother and sister’s footsteps.

“It killed me to get that phone call. Never in my mind would have imagined,” says brother Tim Kisor “It’s still a shock to me.”

His family had just talked to him on Saturday, “We put him on speaker phone and me and my grandmother and mom and everybody talked to him we all told him we loved him,” says Kisor.
Kisor is coping and he finds himself now thinking back to all those fishing trips.

He recalls one memory, “We were out fishing and we fished all night and it was raining. My brother had a bad habit of falling asleep while we were fishing,” says Kisor as he smiles shyly, “He curled up in a rain suit and my uncle caught a big alligator gar and he flipped it up on top of him and flipped him out of the boat – scared the heck out of him.”

The Weatherford High School grad was supposed to be home in October.

Among his big plans was getting engaged to the love of his life.

“Before he left, he told everybody he couldn’t afford a ring at the time, but when he got back from Afghanistan he was going to buy her a ring and propose,” says Kisor.

Beauchamp wanted to be a paramedic after the Navy.
His older brother, who is also serving in the Navy in Afghanistan, is now escorting his body back home.
His family will remember him for his bravery and his will to serve his country.
