ADEN, Yemen, March 6 (Xinhua) -- At least eight government soldiers were injured Tuesday evening during a gun fight with suspected al-Qaida militants in Yemen's southeastern province of Shabwa, a security official told Xinhua.

Gunmen believed to be from the al-Qaida group attacked a military checkpoint positioned in the Ataq city, the provincial capital of Shabwa, injuring at least eight army soldiers, the local security official said on condition of anonymity.

"The army soldiers exchanged gunfire with the assailants for more than half an hour before they fled the scene by motorbikes," the official said.

Another military source near the scene told Xinhua anonymously that "two terrorists were killed in the shootout with the army troops."

Shabwa, some 458 km southeast of the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, is considered to be a stronghold of hundreds of militants from the al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

Meanwhile, the Yemeni Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday that unknown gunmen shot dead a member of the security forces in the southern province of al-Dhalea, without giving further details.

Earlier this week, dozens of al-Qaida militants attacked an army outpost in the neighboring southern province of Abyan, killing more than 180 soldiers and looting the base along with its heavy weaponry, tanks and armored vehicles, according to senior army officials.

Suicide car bombings and violent attacks against the army have increased over the past two weeks. A deadly suicide bombing targeting the presidential palace in the southern province of Hadramout killed nearly 30 soldiers of the elite Republican Guard forces. The al-Qaida wing claimed responsibility for the attack in the following day.

The AQAP attacks underscore the challenges facing the Yemeni government, which is tasked with restoring security and stability to Yemen and putting an end to the growing influence of al-Qaida that threatens the daily oil shipping routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

TIKRIT, Iraq, March 6 (Xinhua) -- A suicide bomber blew up himself in a town in Iraq's Salahudin province on Tuesday, wounding four policemen, while the police captured three suspects who were accompanying the bomber, a provincial police source said.

(Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed at least two civilians on Monday after detonating explosives at the gates of the NATO base where copies of the Koran were burned, Afghan officials said.

The bomber targeted a vehicle belonging to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said district governor Kabir Ahmad Rahil, adding there could be foreign casualties, although a NATO spokeswoman said no coalition troops had been harmed in the attack on Bagram airfield.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was "revenge" for the Koran burning, spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a text message to media.

The burnings of the Koran last month at the NATO base, which the U.S. said were unintentional, brought Afghan-American relations to a new low and sparked widespread anti-Western protests that killed 30 including American troops shot by Afghan soldiers.

Al-Qaida kill 25 Iraqi police officers

A gang of gunmen wearing military-style uniforms has killed 25 police officers in a carefully planned early morning shooting spree in western Iraq, officials say.

The killings began with the gang kidnapping two police commanders from their homes in the western Iraqi city of Haditha at around 2am on Monday. It ended with the gang raising the flag of al-Qaida at a police checkpoint in the latest bloody strike against Iraq's security forces.

Officials in Haditha, 140 miles north-west of Baghdad, described a systematic plot to kill city police, with attackers disguising themselves in military uniforms and driving cars painted to look like Iraqi interior ministry vehicles.

Both of the commanders were roused from their homes by gunmen claiming they had warrants for their arrests, said Mohammed Fathi, spokesman for the governor of Iraq's western Anbar province.

The commanders – a captain and a colonel who served as the city's swat team – were taken less than a quarter of a mile away and shot, Haditha police said.

Fathi said the gang had false arrest warrants for 15 police officials. As their convoy, said to be 13 vehicles long, moved through the city, they were stopped at two police checkpoints.

Fierce gunfights ensued at each checkpoint, and the gang raised the black flag of al-Qaida at the second one, the lieutenant said. Haditha is a former Sunni insurgent stronghold of about 85,000 people along the Euphrates river valley.

The entire raid lasted about half an hour, officials said. Fathi said 25 police officers had been killed and three wounded.

Police at the scene said three of the gunmen were killed but the rest escaped.
