Taliban commander killed in Ghazni air raid

GHAZNI CITY (PAN): A Taliban commander was killed along an associate in an operation by coalition forces in Rashidan district of southern Ghazni province, an official said on Thursday.

The insurgent commander, Hafiz Sardar, was killed during a raid on a house on Wednesday night by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said the National Directorate of Security (NDS) chief for Ghazni.

Syed Amir Sadat told Pajhwok Afghan News Sardar was behind a string of attacks against Afghan National Army (ANA) and coalition forces in the district. Neither security personnel nor civilians suffered casualties in the operation, he concluded.

According to local authorities in eastern Ghazni province of Afghanistan, a prominent Taliban leader was killed along with one of his bodyguard in Rashidan district.

Provincial Intelligence – National Directorate of Security (NDS) Chief Syed Amirshah Sadat confirming the report said the Taliban leader killed was recognized as Hafiz Sardar and was he was killed on Wednesday night.

Ghazni is relatively unsafe province in eastern Afghanistan where Taliban militants and other armed insurgents are openly operating in various districts.

There has been a considerable growth in target killing of Taliban leaders in this province during the recent months.

At least 3 Taliban leaders have been killed in Ghazni province during the past one week however Taliban militants group has not confirmed the death of Hafiz Sardar so far.

Ghanzi NDS chief Syed Amirshah Sadat said Hafiz Sardar was resident of eastern Ghazni province and was involved in major insurgency activities in this province.

He said Hafiz Sardar was killed following a NATO airstrike late Wednesday night and local officials believe that his death will have a positive impact over security situation.

This comes as another Taliban leader Mawlavi Shahid Khel was killed by unknown gunmen riding motorcycle in Quetta city of Pakistan.

NATO supply vehicles burnt in northern Afghanistan

According to local authorities in northern Samangan province of Afghanistan, at least two vehicles providing supplies for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Forces were torched in this province.

Provincial security Chief Mosadiqullah Muzafari confirming the report said the incident took place early Thursday morning.

He said the main reason behind the incident is unclear so far however local residents in the area are saying that the vehicles burnt following a roadside bomb explosion.

Reports suggest there were no casualties but provincial security chief Mosadiqullah Muzafari said the supplies vehicles of ISAF were totally burnt.

This comes as NATO supply vehicles have recently been targeted by militants in northern Samangan province of Afghanistan.

Samangan is a relatively peaceful province in northern Afghanistan however attack on NATO supplies convoy have crated tensions among the local officials.

In the meantime a spokesman for the Taliban group Zabiullah Mujahid said Taliban militants have so far destroyed more than 12 vehicles belonging to NATO troops in Kotal-e-Robatak area.

KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces confirmed today the arrest of a Taliban explosives expert during a security operation in Helmand province Wednesday.

The arrested explosives expert is believed to have operated throughout Helmand province, acquiring, constructing and distributing dozens of improvised explosive devices to insurgents.

The security force also detained a number of suspected insurgents as a result of this operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force discovered and successfully removed eight IEDs in Kandahar province Wednesday, after receiving a tip about the IEDs.

Afghan and coalition security forces seized 15 bags of ammonium chloride, two opium presses, 40 liters (10.5 gallons) of hydrochloric acid and numerous cooking utensils during a search of suspected narcotics factories in Kandahar province yesterday. All seized items were destroyed at the location.

In Kandahar province today, an Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader suspected of distributing IED components to insurgents and facilitating IED ambushes and attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. The security force also detained a number of other suspected insurgents.

In Nangarhar province today, an Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban weapons, ammunition and suicide-IED facilitator. The facilitator is suspected of resourcing and delivering lethal aid to insurgents in the province for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. The security force also detained a number of suspected insurgents and seized grenades and multiple firearms.

Afghan and coalition forces killed two insurgents engaged in threatening activity during a security operation in Ghazni province today.

West
Afghan Provincial Response Company Farah, enabled by coalition forces, detained a number of suspected insurgents and seized 48 kilograms (105 pounds) of opium, two AK-47 rifles, ammunition and several rocket-propelled grenades in Farah province yesterday. All seized items were destroyed at the location.

Key Taliban commander gunned down in Quetta

KABUL (PAN): A key Taliban commander, Mullah Syed Ahmad Shahid Khel, was shot dead in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan, an official said on Wednesday.

Amir Shah Sadat, intelligence director for southern Ghazni province, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the insurgent leader was gunned down by two Pakistani motorcyclists on Sunday afternoon.

Hailing from the Sinday village of Andar district in Ghazni, the body of the man, a member of the Taliban’s Quetta Shura, was still in a Balochistan hospital, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) official said.

Shahid Khel, Taliban’s deputy minister of education and administrative head of the Chak district in Maidan Wardak, came under gun attack on the outskirts of Quetta.

The attack has worried senior Afghan Taliban leaders about their security in a city seen as their longtime sanctuary and capital in exile. The militant leader was hit in the leg, stomach and chest.

One Taliban source confided to Pajhwok that Shahid Khel had earned the wrath of younger Pakistani extremists by denouncing them for attacks on mosques and civilian deaths.

In Several Joint Clearance Operations, Nine Armed Taliban Killed

Counterterrorism:

During the past 24 hours, Afghan National Police, Afghan National Army, NDS and Coalition Forces launched two joint clearance operations in Paktiya and Helmand provinces.

As a result of these operations, nine armed Taliban were killed and seven others were arrested by Afghan National Security Forces.

Also, during these operations, Afghan National Police discovered and confiscated 71 kilos of opium, seven AK-47 assault rifles, one PKM machine gun, 13 different types of mines, 40 kilos of explosives and two motorcycles.

In the meantime, Afghan National Police arrested two armed Taliban (mine planters) with two anti-vehicle mines while they were planting an anti-vehicle mine in the Khora region, Trinkot City capital of Uruzgan province, last night.

Additionally, Afghan National Police discovered and defused seven anti-personnel mines which were placed by enemies of peace and stability in the Zhirie District of southern Kandahar province, yesterday.

2 ISAF interpreters shot dead by insurgents

PUL-I-ALAM (PAN): Two Afghan interpreters with foreign troops were killed by the Taliban in Pul-i-Alam, the capital of central Logar province, on Wednesday, an official said.

The interpreters were shot dead after being forced down from their car in Porak area on the Kabul-Gardez highway at around 8 am, the deputy police chief said.

Col. Rais Khan Sadiq told Pajhwok Afghan News the victims from Mohammad Agha district were acting as translators on ISAF’s Shinak Camp in Padkhwab area.

Sadiq said the victims’ bodies were shifted to the police headquarters and their families informed about the incident.

Witness Rahimullah said the Taliban were searched vehicles on the highway for an hour. He believed the fighters had prior information about the translators’ travel to Pul-i-Alam from Kabul.

Taliban missile attack on NATO base in Kandahar

According to local authorities in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan, Taliban militants attacked a NATO military base in this province.

The officials further added a heavy explosion took place after ammunitions depot caught fire as a result of the rocket attack.

Panjwai district Fazal Ishaq confirming the report said the incident took place in Zangiabad village in Panjwai district.

He said the fire as a result of the explosion in ammunitions depot continued for several hours however he did not disclose further information regarding the casualties as a result of the incident.

In the meantime International Security Assistance Force following a statement announced that a NATO service member was killed following an explosion in NATO camp in southern Afghanistan.

BAGHDAD, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- A total of 15 people were killed and more than 80 others wounded Wednesday in a series of car bomb attacks across Iraq, on the eve of Muslim festival marking the Islamic lunar new year, the police said.

The deadliest attack occurred in the oil-rich province of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, when four car bombs killed a total of nine people and wounded some 32 others, a provincial police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

One of the attacks reportedly went off in the central of Kirkuk, some 250 km north of Baghdad, and the second ripped through the city of Hawija, some 50 km southwest of Kirkuk, the source said.

A third car bomb detonated near the office of a Kurkish party in a village, just south of Kirkuk, while a fourth exploded at a parking lot in northwestern Kirkuk, the source added.

Another car bomb attacked at a crowded marketplace near the city of Hilla, some 100 km south of Baghdad, killing up to six people and wounding some 37 others, an interior ministry source anonymously told Xinhua.

Earlier, the source put the toll at four killed and nine injured by the blast.

In Baghdad, a car bomb detonated near the convoy of a senior police officer at al-Firdos Square in central city, wounding two of his bodyguards and five civilians, the ministry source said.

One more car bomb exploded at a marketplace in the town of Baladruz, east of the provincial capital city of Diyala, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, wounding seven civilians, a provincial police source told Xinhua.

Violence and sporadic high-profile bomb attacks are still common in the Iraqi cities despite the dramatic decrease in violence since its peak in 2006 and 2007, when the country was engulfed in sectarian killings.
