Apr. 21., 2013. - ISAF Joint Command Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan – During an operation in Balkh district, Balkh province, April 20, Afghan and coalition security forces killed two insurgents while searching for a senior Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leader.

The IMU leader is believed to have a long history of planning attacks against civilians and Afghan and coalition forces. The leader is accused to have coordinated a failed attack against a public gathering, specifically targeting the Balkh provincial governor and other government officials with suicide bombers. He is known to conduct coordinated operations between IMU and Taliban networks, and has extensive experience facilitating the movement of improvised explosive devices throughout the area. An assessment is still ongoing to determine additional details of the operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested one insurgent during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Kandahar district, Kandahar province, April 21. The leader is believed to have operational control over a group of insurgents responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He is suspected to be a key insurgent facilitator in the area, procuring and distributing weapons and other military supplies.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested four insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Kandahar district, Kandahar province, April 21. The leader is believed to manage a network of insurgents throughout the province, and gathering intelligence to use against Afghan and coalition forces. He has also participated in executions of Afghan officials, assisted in the facilitation of weapons to local insurgents, and directly associated with Abdullah Wakil, the former Taliban leader for Panjwa’i district. Wakil was killed during an Afghan and coalition operation on March 31.

East

During an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, April 21, Afghan and coalition security forces arrested three insurgents. The leader is believed to be responsible assassinations against government officials, facilitated movement of money, distributed weapons and insurgent fighters, and conducted multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the local area.

Ghazni province

Afghan National Security Forces found and safely cleared one IED during operations in the Pul-E-Alam district.

Taliban punish two Afghan guards with amuptations in Herat

According to police officials in western Herat province of Afghanistan, Taliban group militants have amputated a hand and a foot of two private security guards over robbery charges.

Taliban group following a statement cofnirmed the report and said they had cut off the right hand and left foot of each man accusing them for highway robberies.

The statement further added that the men had confessed to “the District court of the Islamic Emirate” that they had robbed travellers on roads in the area.

However one of the victims he and his companion had been kidnapped a few days ago by the militants.

The two individuals reportedly worked for a private security company providing escort services to NATO-led coaltion security forces logistic convoys.

Provincial police spokesman Noor Khan Nikzad said the incident happened in the Rabat-e Sangi district and the men were brought to Herat city for treatment.

Taliban group imposed a harsh form of Islamic justice while they were ruling the country from 1996 to 2001. Taliban militants are frequently targeting Afghan and coalition security forces and civilians who are working for NATO troops since they were toppled down by a US-led invasion in 2001.

6 killed by own bombs in Logar

PUL-I-ALAM (PAN): Six suspected militants were killed on Saturday when the roadside bombs they were planting in the capital of central Logar province went off prematurely, an official said.

The rebels were planting the landmines on a road frequented by the Afghan Local Police (ALP) in the Kamalkhel area of Pul-i-Alam, the deputy police chief said.

Col. Raees Khan Sadiq told Pajhwok Afghan News the guerrillas were blown to bits and could not be recognised.

Witness Abdullah said three of the bomb-planters belonged to Kamalkhel and the rest came from other areas of Logar. The powerful predawn explosion was heard in several nearby villages, he added.

Taliban, HIA fighters clash in Wardak

GHAZNI CITY (PAN): A clash has erupted between Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA) and Taliban fighters after an HIA commander was killed in a roadside bombing in central Maidan Wardak province, an official said on Saturday.

The HIA commander, Khan Jee, was killed along with a friend in the blast on Friday in the Tokrak area of Narkh district, the governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, told Pajhwok Afghan News. The Taliban were accused by the HIA members for planting the device.

The clash broke out soon after the blast, but no report about casualties could be ascertained, the official said

The firefight comes two days after two HIA men were killed during a clash with the Taliban in the same area.

Female suicide bomber kill four at hospital in Bajaur

According to Pakistani security officials, a woman suicide bomber today detonated a bomb outside a hospital in a lawless tribal area of northwest Pakistan, killing at least four people and injuring five others.

The attack took place in Khar, the main town of Bajaur tribal district bordering Afghanistan where the military has carried out several offensives against Al-Qaeda-linked Taliban militants.

Mohammad Riaz, chief doctor at the government hospital said, “At least four people were killed and four others were wounded in the blast outside the main gate of the hospital.”

In the meantime local administration official Abdul Haseebhe said, “It was a female suicide bomber, about 18-20 years old. We have found her legs and head.”

The dead included a security personnel, a hospital worker and two civilians, he added.

Bajaur, one of seven districts that make up Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), had been a stronghold of the Taliban until 2008. However, the security forces cleared the region of Taliban militants as the result of major offensives.

In Several Joint Clearance Operations, Eight Armed Taliban Killed (20.Apr.2013.)

Counterterrorism:

In past 24 hours, Afghan National Police conducted several joint clearance operations with the cooperation of Afghan National Army, NDS and Coalition Forces to clean some of the areas from terrorists and enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan.
 

The operations were conducted in Kandahar, Uruzgan, Logar, Khost, Paktika and Helmand provinces, as a result eight armed Taliban were killed, four wounded and 10 other armed Taliban were arrested by Afghan National Security Forces.                                                                                     
 

Also, during these operations, Afghan National Police discovered and confiscated two PK machine guns, four AK-47 rifles, three anti-vehicle mines and 68 kilos of opium.
 

During the same 24 hour period, Afghan National Police discovered and defused three different types of mines placed by enemies of Afghanistan for destructive activities in Faryab and Herat provinces.

Nigeria: Boko Haram 'Taking Over Northern Borno State'

Many local governments areas in northern Borno and other parts of the state are gradually coming under the control of members of the Jama'atu Ahlis Sunnah Lid Da'awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram, Weekly Trust heard yesterday.

The northern part of Borno shares international borders with Cameroon, Niger and Chad republics and comprises Marte, Magumeri, Mobbar, Gubio, Guzamala, Abadam, Kukawa, Kaga, Nganzai and Monguno Local Government Areas.

Weekly Trust reports that very few attacks take place in Damboa, Chibok, Biu and Gwoza Local Government Areas in the southern part of the state while Hawul, Bayo, Kwaya Kusar, Askira/Uba and Shani have remained relatively peaceful.

Most government officials and civil servants had fled most of these areas except Damasak. Bama and some parts of Konduga Local Government Area, both in the central part of the state, are also coming under the control of the sect members who had chased away government officials and civil servants, it was learnt.

The source alleged that the JTF, which has received over 200 new patrol hilux vans, in addition to the fuelling of its vehicles and allowances for its soldiers, have largely remained more active in central parts of the state. When contacted last night, officials of the Borno State Government referred our reporter to the Joint Military task Force (JTF). However, several attempts to speak with the spokesman of the JTF Lt Col Sagir Musa were not successful as calls placed to his mobile phone failed to go through.

Weekly Trust also learnt that in Marte Local Government, the sect members control most villages and openly organize public preaching in village market in Krenuwa, the hometown of the current Secretary to the State Government Ambassador Baba Ahmed Jidda, who is a member of the Presidential Amnesty Committee.

It was also learnt that the sect members are acquiring so many vehicles, in military colours and mounting guns on them. Three brand new hilux vans belonging to the Chad Basin were also reportedly snatched by gunmen.

Weekly Trust gathered that members of the Agricultural Transformation team set up by the Borno State Governor has been chased out of Marte by insurgents, abandoning harvest of wheat in 5,000 hectares of irrigation land, revived and funded by the state through collaboration between the Borno State Government and the Federal Government-owned Chad Basin Development Authority. The farm has over 60,000 hectares of unused irrigation land in Marte.

Suicide bomber attack Afghan, NATO troops convoy in Helmand

According to local authorities in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan, at least 7 people including 2 civlians and 5 police forces were injured following a suicide attack in this province.

The officials further added, the incident took place after a suicide bomber rammed a vehicle packed with explosives into a joint convoy of Afghan and coalition security forces in Sangin district on Friday.

Sangin district governor Mohammad Daud Noorzai confirming the report said the incident took place around 11am local time.

In the meantime a spokesman for the Taliban group Qari Yosuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility behind the incident and said at least 10 Afghan security forces and 10 coalition forces were killed following the attack.

Local officials however denied the claims by the Taliban group and said only 5 Afghan police officers from the public order forces were injured along with two other civilians.
