BAGRAM, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security and coalition forces killed 11 insurgents, detained three suspected insurgents, discovered one weapons cache and found and safely cleared seven improvised explosive devices during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, May 16.

Ghazni province
Afghan National Security Forces killed one insurgent during operations in the Andar district.

Afghan National Security Forces discovered one weapons cache during operations in the Deh Yak district. The cache contained an unknown number of rockets and artillery shells.

Afghan National Security Forces found and safely cleared one IED during operations in the Ghazni district.

Coalition Forces found and safely cleared one IED during operations in the Khawja Omari district.

Laghman province
Afghan National Security Forces found and safely cleared one IED during operations in the Qarghaee district.

Nangarhar province
Afghan National Security Forces detained one suspected insurgent during operations in the Muhmand Dara district. The suspect was transferred to a base for questioning.

Hizb-i-Islami Gulbuddin suicide bomber in Kabul kills 6 Americans, 9 Afghans

This morning in Kabul, a suicide bomber in an explosives-packed vehicle blew up a two-car American military convoy, killing at least 15 people. Six Americans died in the attack along with nine Afghan civilians, including two children. The attack also injured 42 others, of whom 39 were Afghan civilians.
The attack took place during morning rush hour near the diplomatic area of the Afghan capital, according to Dawn.
The International Security Assistance Force issued a press release which stated that "[t]wo International Security Assistance Force service members and four ISAF contracted civilians died following an improvised explosive device attack in Kabul, Afghanistan today." Afghan and ISAF officials confirmed that the ISAF members killed in the attack were American.
Today's attack, which damaged a number of residences and left some civilians so badly burnt they were unrecognizable, is the worst terror attack in Kabul since March, when a suicide bomber killed nine Afghans during a visit by US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.
Pajhwok Afghan News reported that the powerful blast in a Kabul residential area destroyed dozens of houses and 30 vehicles, including two belonging to foreigners.
The National Directorate of Security, Afghanistan's intelligence agency, has stated that the NDS thwarts a large number of attacks on the capital every week, however.
The attack was claimed by the Hizb-i-Islami Gulbuddin, whose spokesman Haroon Zarghoun told Reuters that the group had targeted American military advisers. "We planned this attack for over a week," he said. He identified the suicide bomber as Qari Qudratullah from central Logar province, Pajhwok reported.

5/16/13: Violence Kills 25 in Iraq

Multiple car bombs have exploded in Baghdad, killing at least 12 people in mainly Shi'ite districts of the Iraqi capital. At least 13 more people died in other violence, according to officials.

The blasts Thursday hit the Sadr City and Kamaliya areas, leaving at least 18 other people wounded.

The attacks follow a wave of bombings Wednesday that also struck mainly Shi'ite neighborhoods. Those blasts killed at least 33 people.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki blamed the violence on what he called "sectarian hatred" and what results from a "sectarian mindset."

Continuing violence in Iraq has raised fears of a return to the sectarian fighting that left tens of thousands dead in 2006 and 2007.

Violence has fallen from that peak, but the United Nations said last month was the deadliest in Iraq since June 2008, with 712 people killed and 1,633 wounded in April.

Nigeria: 2,000 Soldiers, Fighter Jets Deployed to Borno

Maiduguri — About 2,000 security operatives and military hardware, including fighter jets have been deployed to Maiduguri ahead of yesterday's declaration of State of Emergency.
In neighboring Yobe State, it is not clear how many soldiers were deployed but residents said shortly after the declaration of state of emergency, stop and search operations have been intensified in the state capital while movement have been restricted in other places.

Residents said the deployment of the federal troops, including the army, navy, air force and operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) began at the weekend.

"We started sensing danger on Saturday when we saw military trucks conveying soldiers to the Joint Task Force (JTF) headquarters along Pompomari area," Usman Jika, a resident of Maiduguri said.

"By Sunday morning, so many roadblocks have sprung up in the state capital and there was noticeable cordon and search of houses by new faces (soldiers)," he said.

A resident of Kumshe, one of the red spots in Maiduguri said his neighbour was beaten to pulp on Sunday when soldiers besieged the areas and forced all the people out of their houses.

"All the soldiers that came to the neighborhood appeared new in the town, some of them said it is now time for 'fire for fire" he said.

Another resident said he saw military aircrafts landing at the Maiduguri International Airport and the air strip at the Air Force base in the state capital.

"A lot of fighting equipment have been deployed to Maiduguri," Hajja Maimuna, a resident of Gomari, whose house is close to the Air Force base said.

"We are really terrified because the military operatives coming to Maiduguri in the last two days far outnumbered those that came during the previous emergency rule," she said.

"Even though the state governor has not been removed, which is good, the truth is that Maiduguri is now a garrison town, full of angry soldiers who are ready to kill at the slightest provocation. The deployment will definitely hamper social and economic life of the people," she said.

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force killed a senior Taliban leader, Shah Gul, during an operation in Chimtal district, Balkh province, yesterday.

Gul had operational control over a group of fighters responsible for numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He was involved in kidnapping operations, procuring and distributing weapons and military equipment to insurgents in the local area, and collecting illegal taxes in order to fund insurgent activities.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested a senior Taliban leader during an operation in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, today. He also facilitates the movement of weapons in the local area and serves as an intelligence operative responsible for relaying operational information to insurgent leadership.

An Afghan and coalition security force wounded one insurgent during an operation in search of a senior Taliban leader in Waygal district, Nuristan province, yesterday. The senior leader is the top military official for the Taliban in Waygal district. He is responsible for facilitating the movement of al-Qaida terrorists in Waygal district, erecting and enforcing illegal checkpoints, kidnapping Afghan officials and leading attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

An Afghan and coalition security force arrested four insurgents during an operation in search of a Haqqani leader in Zurmat district, Paktiya province, today. The leader participates in kidnapping operations in multiple districts throughout Paktiya province. He is also engaged in weapons trafficking for local terrorist cells and conducts investigations into insurgent activity at the behest of senior insurgent leadership. During the operation, a group of insurgents opened fire on the security force. The security force returned fire, killing one insurgent. The security force also seized two AK-47s, three fragmentation grenades, eight magazines and ammunition as a result of the operation.

The 2nd Special Operations Kandak and coalition forces killed a Taliban leader and detained six insurgents during a clearance operation in Deh Yak district, Ghazni province, yesterday. The Taliban leader was responsible for 20 insurgent fighters and had been facilitating improvised explosive device and indirect fire attacks in the Deh Yak district. All detainees were transferred to Afghan law enforcement officials.

11 killed in central Nigeria village attack

KADUNA, Nigeria, May 14 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were killed on Tuesday in an attack on a village in central north Nigeria, according to security sources.

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen struck Zangang Village in Kaduna State. The raid also left several people missing and a number of others injured, who were taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for treatment, the sources told Xinhua.

Many houses including the residence of the district head were razed.

A Xinhua reporter in the state said the attack followed an assault on Sunday by gunmen who wore mask and rode on bikes. The attackers were averted by soldiers.

Last month, the village was raided by suspected herdsmen who killed 19 people and injured several others.

The state government has condemned the attacks, saying measures would be taken to forestall future occurrence.

State Governor Mukhtar Yero said the state is working out a possible solution to the problem of the area.

Explosion rocks Jalalabad city in Nangarhar, 9 injured

A heavy explosion rocked Jalalabad city in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan early Wednesday morning, injuring at least nine people including Afghan security forces.

According to reports the incident took place near Sherzai stadium targeting Afghan national police forces.

Head of the central hospital for Jalalabad city, Dr. Humayoon Zaheer confirming the report said all those injured during the explosion were taken to the hospital.

He said at least three Afghan civilians and six Afghan police officers were injured during the incident.

No group has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

Afghan National Army Special Forces, advised by coalition forces, detained eight insurgents and seized a large cache of homemade explosive during an operation in Panjwa’I district, Kandahar province yesterday. The cache consisted of 757 liters (200 gallons) of homemade explosive and several IED making materials. The detainees have been transferred to the Afghan Uniformed Police and all seized materials were destroyed on location.

An Afghan Local Police quick reaction force responding to an attack on two separate ALP checkpoints killed one insurgent and wounded another in Andar district, Ghazni province, yesterday. The Afghan force engaged several insurgents, shortly after being dispatched from the District Operations Coordination Center, who were attacking the Rustam and Golo ALP checkpoints, using 82mm mortar and DSHKA fire. No Afghan Local Police were injured during this engagement.

An Afghan quick reaction force killed two insurgents while responding to an attack on an ALP checkpoint in Gelan district, Ghazni province, yesterday. The QRF was dispatched after Afghan Local Police contacted the District Operation Coordination Center for assistance. Following the engagement the security force recovered two AK-47 rifles.
