11 armed insurgents killed in Faryab and Logar provinces

Counterterrorism:

Afghan National Police launched an independent operation in the Khowaja Kenti village, Qisar District of Faryab province.

As a result of this operation, three armed insurgents were killed and two others arrested with amount of weapons by Afghan National Police.

In a separate operation, Afghan National Police (Special Units) launched an operation in the Almar District of Faryab province.

As a result, three armed insurgents were killed.

Also, during this operation, Afghan National Police discovered and confiscated one suicide vest and three different types of weapons.

Additionally, five armed insurgents were killed and two others were wounded by their own explosives while they attempted to fire a mortar round on residential area in the Dowshanba village, Braki District of Logar province.

May 14, 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 14) — An Afghan-led security force supported by coalition troops detained a Taliban facilitator during an operation in Kandahar district, Kandahar province, today.
The facilitator supplied weapons, ammunition and equipment to insurgents for attacks against Afghan and coalition troops in Kandahar City.

He was also planning an attack against a district center and was plotting to assassinate a district governor.

The security force detained one additional insurgent during the operation.

In Yosuf Khel district, Paktika province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a Haqqani leader today. The leader plans and directs attacks against Afghan government officials, Afghan security forces and civilians. Two insurgents were detained as a result of this operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a Haqqani leader in Pul-e ‘Alam district, Logar province, today. The leader directs roadside bombings against Afghan and coalition security forces throughout the province. He also coordinates the delivery of explosive device materials to build roadside bombs. Multiple suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.

In Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a Taliban facilitator today. The facilitator coordinates roadside bombs attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces in the district. The security force detained two suspected insurgents and seized one rifle, grenades, and more than 500 rounds of small arms ammunition.

Finally, Afghan and coalition forces conducted a security operation in search of a Haqqani leader in Sarobi district, Paktika province, Friday. The Haqqani leader organizes indirect fire attacks and other operations against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the district. After positively identifying insurgents preparing for a suicide bomb attack in an isolated area and ensuring no civilians were in the vicinity, the security force conducted a precision airstrike against the insurgent position, killing multiple insurgents. A follow-on assessment of the area determined no civilians were harmed and no civilian property was damaged. Multiple rocket-propelled grenade launchers, AK-47's and explosives were recovered from the site.

May 12., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 12) — An Afghan National Security Force supported by coalition forces conducted two counter-narcotic missions in Baghran district, Helmand province and Deh Rawud district, Uruzgan province, between 8-10 May.

The combined forces discovered approximately 6,600 pounds (3,000 kilograms) of hashish, 407 pounds (185 kilograms) of opium, 1,320 pounds (600 kilograms) of poppy seeds and 330 pounds (150 kilograms) of morphine.

The security forces destroyed all drugs on site. In addition, the security forces seized narcotics processing equipment, improvised explosive device components and weapons.

In Arghistan district, Kandahar province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to capture a Taliban leader today. The leader was responsible for constructing, distributing and planting improvised explosive devices for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Kandahar and Daman districts. He also planed indirect fire attacks on Kandahar Airfield. Insurgents fired on the security force as the Afghan troops attempted to take the commander into custody. The security force returned fire killing the two insurgents. The security force recovered multiple weapons and grenades, four pressure plates improvised explosive devices, multiple remote control receivers, remote control transmitters, and timers as a result of this operation.

East
An Afghan and coalition security force conducted a search for a senior Taliban commander, during an operation in Charkh district, Logar province. The commander conducted roadside bombings, indirect fire attacks and other operations against Afghan and coalition troops throughout the district. He also supplied weapons and ammunition to insurgents in the area. Insurgents fired on the Afghan and coalition troops as they approached the leader’s suspected location. The security force returned fire killing the two insurgents and one other insurgent. The security force detained one additional insurgent and recovered multiple weapons as a result of this operation.


Afghan and coalition security forces conducted a operation in search of a Haqqani commander in Jaji district, Paktiya province, yesterday. The commander coordinated and planned attacks on Afghan and coalition forces throughout the region. He was directly involved in the improvised explosive device attack on a coalition vehicle on May 6 in Ahmad Khel district, Paktiya province. After ensuring no civilians were in the vicinity of the target, and as the Haqqani commander was preparing for an imminent attack, the security force engaged the target with a precision air strike. The commander and one other insurgent were killed as a result of the strike. A follow-on assessment of the area determined no civilians were harmed and no civilian property was damaged.

Finally, in Wali Muhammad Shahid Khugyani district, Ghazni province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to capture a Taliban leader today. The leader conducts roadside bombings against Afghan and coalition security forces in Wali Muhammad Shahid Khugyani and other Ghazni districts. He also provides explosives expertise to the insurgents in the area. The security force detained one suspected insurgent and recovered approximately 308 pounds (140 kilograms) of explosive material.

May 11., 2012. - RC-East operational update

BAGRAM, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces killed at least five insurgents and found multiple weapons caches during operations in eastern Afghanistan throughout the past 24 hours, May 10.

Paktika province
Afghan National Army soldiers, Afghan Uniform Police and Afghan Local Police killed at least five insurgents who were using suicide vests, rocket propelled grenade launchers and small arms to attack Yahya Khel district Capital. Two insurgent’s suicide vests detonated killing two ANSF personnel. One Afghan civilian was also killed and two ANSF personnel were wounded by insurgents during the attack.

Nangarhar province
Afghan Uniform Police discovered 500 shotguns inside a dump truck in Behsud district. AUP detained three individuals from the vehicle and confiscated the weapons and truck.

Ghazni province
ANA soldiers and coalition forces discovered two weapon caches in a mosque and its surrounding area in Qarah Bagh district. The caches contained material used to make improvised explosive devises, mines, small arms and rocket-propelled grenade launcher rounds.

Operations in RC-East are still ongoing.

NATO soldier shot dead by individual in Afghan army uniform

A NATO soldier was shot dead by an individual in Afghan National Army uniform in eastern regions of the country on Friday.

NATO-led International security Assistance Force following a press release on Friday announced, “An individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon against coalition service members in eastern Afghanistan today, killing one service member.”

The source did not disclose further information regarding the exact location of the incident and nationality of the deceased soldier.

International Security Assistance Force generally do not disclose identities of the NATO soldiers killed in Afghanistan saying, “It is ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.”

At least 149 NATO service members including 103 US troops, 18 British and 28 troops from the other NATO member countries have been killed in various incidents since the beginning of 2012 in Afghanistan.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 11) — An Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a Taliban facilitator in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, today.

The facilitator provides weapons, ammunition and roadside bomb-making materials to insurgents. He also transports funds for senior Taliban leaders operating in central Helmand.

The security force detained multiple suspected insurgents as a result of this operation.

He also coordinates the movement of suicide bombers for attacks within Daman district. Multiple suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to search suspected narcotics-processing facilities in Baghran district, Helmand province, Tuesday. As the combined force reached the area, insurgents opened fire with small arms. The security force returned fire, killing several insurgents. A subsequent search of the area discovered a drug cache containing 330 pounds of morphine base, more than 400 pounds of opium, 880 pounds of poppy seeds, and more than 2,000 pounds of drug-processing materials. Several improvised explosive device-making materials and small arms weapons were also discovered. The security force destroyed the drug related materials and weapons at the scene without further incident.

Three armed insurgents killed, one wounded and 12 others arrested by Afghan National Police

During the past 24 hours, Afghan National Police, Afghan National Army, NDS and Coalition Forces launched 14 joint clearance operations in Kabul, Balkh, Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Uruzgan, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Khost and Paktika provinces.

As a result of these operations, three armed insurgents were killed, one wounded and 12 others were arrested by Afghan National Police.

Also, during these operations, Afghan National Police discovered and confiscated 15 different types of weapons, one rocket launcher, two PKM machine gun, three radio handsets, 19 heavy rounds, six different types of mines, three hand grenades, 106 kilograms of opium, 40 kilograms of explosive materials and five motorbikes.

During the same 24 hour period, Afghan National Police discovered and defused one anti-vehicle mine and 15 heavy rounds as a result of security operations in Baghlan and Nangarhar provinces.

May 10., 2012. - ISAF Joint Command Morning Operational Update

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 10) — A combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered more than 17 tons of explosive precursor during a patrol in Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province, yesterday.
The cache was discovered in a truck during a routine vehicle inspection. All of the explosive-making materials were confiscated and transported to a secure facility and the driver of the vehicle was taken into Afghan custody for questioning.

One additional insurgent was detained as a result of this operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a search operation in Tarin Kot district, Uruzgan province, Monday. During the operation, several insurgents maneuvered into firing positions to engage the combined force. Assessing an imminent threat, the security force engaged the insurgents, killing one. The force also detained several insurgents and discovered multiple improvised explosive device components and initiators.

In Zurmat district, Paktiya province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a Taliban leader today. The leader coordinates and conducts roadside bombings, indirect fire attacks and other operations against Afghan and coalition security forces. He is also suspected of providing Afghan National Security Force uniforms to insurgents for infiltration-style attacks. Two suspected insurgents were detained as a result of this operation.

Finally, an Afghan and coalition security force detained an insurgent leader during an operation in Ghanzi district, Ghanzi province, Monday. The leader was responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the district. Multiple additional insurgents were detained as a result of the operation.

KABUL, Afghanistan (May 9) — An Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a Taliban leader in Zharay district, Kandahar province, today.
The leader serves as the senior insurgent in Sangin district and attempts to enforce Taliban law on civilians in the area. He also plans and executes roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces throughout the district.

The security force detained multiple suspected insurgents as a result of this operation.

An Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a senior Taliban leader in Ghorak district, Helmand province, today. The leader is responsible for Taliban operations against Afghan and coalition security forces in Sangin and Kajaki districts. He is also active in intimidation and murder campaigns against Afghan civilians in Northern Helmand who refuse to adhere to Taliban law. Multiple suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.

In Reg-e Khan Neshin district, Helmand province, an Afghan and coalition security force discovered a drug cache during a routine patrol yesterday. The cache consisted of more than 1,030 pounds (470 kilograms) of narcotics. The force also discovered an AK-47 along with four ammunition magazines with 115 rounds. All of the items were confiscated and taken to an ISAF installation for examination and disposal.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered a drug cache during a routine patrol in Nawah-ye Barakzai district, Helmand province, yesterday. The cache consisted of 1,980 pounds (900 kilograms) of narcotics which were destroyed on-site.

East

In Andar district, Ghazni province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a Taliban leader today. The leader conducts roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition troops, primarily along Highway 1. He also directs suicide attacks and indirect fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forward operating bases. The security force detained two suspected insurgents as a result of this operation.

Finally, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to detain a Taliban leader in Maidan Shahr district, Wardak province, today. The leader organizes roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition troops throughout the province, and supplies weapons and ammunition to insurgents in the area. Two suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.
