KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents and discovered an improvised explosive device-making facility during an operation in Zharay district, Kandahar province, yesterday.
The cache contained more than 550 pounds (250 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate, as well as batteries, wires and several other IED components.
All of the materials were either destroyed or confiscated by the security force without incident.

A coalition air weapons team killed several insurgents during an engagement in Asadabad district, Kunar province, today. The insurgents were firing on an ISAF installation in the area and when the air weapons team arrived on scene the insurgents turned their fire against the aircraft. The aircrew returned fire, killing several insurgents. No civilians were harmed during the exchange.
West
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained numerous suspected insurgents along with a cache of drugs and weapons during an operation in Bala Boluk district, Farah province, yesterday. The suspected insurgents were found with a number of small arms weapons and ammunition, as well as more than 88 pounds (40 kilograms) of opium and hashish. All of the items were either safely destroyed or confiscated by the security force as evidence.
