The al-Qaida gunmen attempted to break into Jaar's police station in Abyan province but failed, then they tossed powerful grenades on the building, the local security official said on condition of anonymity.
"The home-made grenades exploded inside the police headquarters, killing five policemen and injuring two others at the scene," the security official said.
"The police soldiers backed by counter-terrorism forces started to search for the al-Qaida attackers... We have not made any arrest yet. They will be captured sooner or later," the security official said.
The fresh attack that took place in Jaar town showed that al- Qaida militants were still able to attack government targets.
The Yemeni army has claimed success in its fight against the al- Qaida militants, who are behind two years of violence in the country, but insurgents still carried out attacks after they retreated to mountains.
